The NBA says about half of the league's 30 teams employ the video game in making personnel evaluations.

The game's "Dynamic DNA", the new stats engine behind this kind of analysis, is good enough to be taken seriously even when team officials are evaluating straight-up rookies barely a dozen games into the season. Dynamic DNA not only simulates the surges and slumps players hit during a long 82-game season, it updates that model with real-world statistics and outcomes fed into EA's servers daily.

So for those who know what they're looking for, it can help form a deep analysis on some of the more pointilistic aspects of a player's game. Says Daryl Morey, no less than the general manager of the Houston Rockets:

"For example, you can tell how often, if [Kevin] Love throws an outlet pass, how often his team scores on the possession. You can tell how often [O.J.] Mayo goes right versus left, how effective the team is with Mayo pulling up and shooting versus when he pulls up and passes instead."

Furthermore, writes the Times: "In the quiet of his office, Morey said he can see how often a player posts up and gets shots on cuts to the basket as well as about defensive and offensive tendencies."

Morey is a devotee of talent-evaluation demigod Billy Beane (the general manager of Major League Baseball's Oakland Athletics), and swears by video games — and not as a diversion. "I don't play EA Sports as a game. I use it as a tool," he says. Of course, EA is a marketing partner of the NBA, so take the name brand mention for what it's worth. But general managers of major sports franchises don't have much time to screw around mid-season, so I'd believe him if he says it helps.

<![CDATA[The Real Reason Melo Cut His Hair]]> Denver Nuggets all-star and totally not a pot-head, Carmelo Anthony stars in this video about a bet gone awry. We've all been there man, betting shit we really don't want to lose in the heat of the moment. In this case things end with a razor, but on the bright side it wasn't about to cut off one of his fingers.

Fun side note, shortly after covering the Carmelo pot case for the Rocky I got an Xbox 360 invite from one Carmelo. Not sure if it was the same guy, but the timing was oddly accurate and the Gamertag was too. No, I won't tell you what it was. I've since deleted his name from my list, but Carmelo if you're down for some Gears 2 hit me up. Just don't expect me to bet my hair on anything.

<![CDATA[And The NBA Live 09 Cover Athlete Is...]]>
While the official announcement isn't due until tomorrow, the nice folks at
GameCinemaHD passed along this trailer, revealing the the cover athlete for EA's NBA Live 09 is none other than San Antonio Spurs starting point guard Tony Parker. Hailing from the mean streets of...France...Parker's accolades are many, most of them listed in the video so I don't have to repeat them here.

The video runs best in Firefox or Safari, or if you'd like to see it in all its HD glory, you can hit up Times Square, where the video is set to debut today at the corner of Broadway and 47th above the W Hotel on a 40 foot by 30 foot screen.
