These are those thoughts.

"The hard part is to make [Gears of War] into something that doesn't feel like a world torn asunder and people just in battle," Godfrey tells Making Of. "I think we really want to focus on the idea of a world that's running well and then it's Emergence Day."

Godfrey says he pictures the film—to be directed by Underworld director and Kate Beckinsale husband Len Wiseman—telling a story of the survival of "those 48 hours" following Emergence Day, likening the experience to 2008's big monster movie Cloverfield.

He also says this. Help me decipher it. "Trying to tell the epic story of an alien planet that's living in a horrific environment just feels like the wrong move right now," Godfrey tells Making Of.

If that means something to you, please, let us know your interpretation in the comments.

<![CDATA[More Movies Refused BBFC Classification Than Games]]> In an attempt to counter unfair stereotypes about games, UK game industry trade organization TIGA reveals that three times as many movies have been refused British Board of Film Classification ratings than games in the past five years.

The statistics, which came to light as a result of a written answer to a question by a Parliament member in the House of Commons yesterday, indicate that only four games in the past five years have been refused BBFC classification. All four instance occurred in 2007, and Rockstar's Manhunt 2 for the Wii, PS2, PC, and PSP could very well account for all four. and those were all reviewed and granted classification the next year.

In contrast, thirteen films have been refused since 2005. TIGA CEO Dr Richard Wilson finds this data very telling.

"There have been hardly any instances of the BBFC refusing classification for video games. In fact, during the past five years, there have only been four games deemed unfit or unsuitable for classification, as opposed to 13 films – more than three times the amount of games. It is important that these facts are placed in the public domain as they clearly counter some of the unfair stereotypes about video games."

Of course, for a more accurate idea of the film versus movie ratings ratio we'd have to know how many movies versus games passed through the BBFC ratings procedures during the reported years, but the data we have is good enough for a forum argument.

<![CDATA[Let's Hope This Doesn't Confirm a Bloodrayne Game Sequel]]> Uwe Boll is alleged to be committing second-degree filmmaking again, this time as a sequel to his last Bloodrayne film, with or without a sequel to the actual video game.

Game or film would be bad enough. Both together would be like multiplying zeroes. The Movie Blog drops word of Boll's latest ambition, which is confusingly titled Bloodrayne 3: Warhammer. Yeah, I have no idea what that means, either, except maybe a C&D in the mail from Mythic Entertainment? Kirstanna Loken is said to be back in the lead role.

I couldn't track down what The Movie Blog was sourcing but this post says this movie will begin filming in January. Which means it'll be finished in February. Or at least look like it.

<![CDATA[Silent Hill Movie Sequel Needs To Be "More Accessible"]]> As pre-production on a sequel to 2006's Silent Hill movie plods along, a few new details are being offered up as to the direction the film is going to take, courtesy of producer Don Carmody.

For starters, Roger Avary - who wrote the first movie - may not return. He's, uh, busy. And while we don't know which cast members, if any, will be returning, Carmody confirms that Christophe Gans won't be back in the director's chair, as he "wants to direct something new".

Carmody then opens up on the course the movie will take, while at the same time addressing some of the complaints fans of the series had over the first film's tone and depiction of familiar characters.

"I think we need to make it a little more accessible to the movie-going public", he told STYD. "Silent Hill is not a blockbuster game like Resident Evil or the other games out there. It's a connoisseurs' game. It has its own, rabid fan base. They're not cheap, these things. You have to appeal not only to the gamers, you have to appeal to a wider audience. So we have to get some story in there that helps explain a bit more. I think that's all happening. Of course, [the story] is going to happen years later and the main character - without giving too much away - is much older and representative to the movie-going public which is in that age group."

<![CDATA[Brad Pitt Attached To Dark Void Movie]]> Brad Pitt's production company Plan B Entertainment and Capcom have come to an agreement over the movie rights for Dark Void, now being developed as a sci-fi thriller and potential Pitt starring vehicle.

Capcom's third-person shooter isn't out until January, but Pitt's production company seems to think it has potential at the box office. Plan B Entertainment now holds the rights to a theatrical version of the game under its Creative Partnership with Reliance BIG Entertainment. Said theatrical version would likely follow the story of game protagonist Will, who crash lands in the Bermuda Triangle and wakes up in the mysterious Void, where an ancient alien race plots to take over civilization.

According to the Capcom press release, the movie version is being developed with Brad Pitt himself in mind for the starring role.

"As a game, Dark Void was developed with a wide-screen mentality - a world full of adventure presented in cinematic scope and scale," said Germaine Gioia, senior vice president, licensing, Capcom Entertainment. "Plan B recognized the potential of our newest property and are as excited about bringing Dark Void to life in cinemas as Capcom is to bring the interactive experience to home theaters."

Sounds great! I've been waiting a long time for a sequel to The Rocketeer.

<![CDATA[More Call Of Duty Movie Talk Bubbles Up From Soap Himself]]> Were Activision to pass on creating a Call of Duty-based film, it would be leaving millions on the table. Not their style. That's why more chatter about a possible Call of Duty doesn't surprise, especially coming from "Soap" MacTavish himself.

No, not the video game character. We're still pretty good at discerning reality from fantasy. The voice of "Soap" in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, actor Kevin McKidd, tells the New York Post that "there are talks of a feature film" based on the franchise. Which is hardly concrete, but backs up previous speculation that, yes, a Call of Duty movie is happening.

It's not really a question of if, but when, especially if Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward has more time on its hands to dedicate to side projects.

<![CDATA[Resident Evil Director 'Circling' Castlevania, Metal Gear Movies]]> Castlevania? Thought that movie project was dead. Apparently not, and apparently Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil, Death Race, Mortal Kombat) is "waiting on a script." Oh, and he'd like to adapt Metal Gear Solid for the silver screen, too.

That is according to Jeremy Bolt, who is Anderson's co-producer on Resident Evil: Afterlife. Visiting that film's set, the site ShockTillYouDrop.com says it spoke to Bolt, who "told us this morning that Paul W.S. Anderson is still circling video game adaptation Castlevania at Rogue Pictures and that they are waiting on a script."

"Bolt added that he and Anderson would like to adapt Konami's Metal Gear Solid for the big screen at Columbia Pictures," ShockTillYouDrop.com added.

You can check out Paul W.S. Anderson's filmography here but he ain't no Bergman. Please note that none of this confirms Anderson has anything to do with the Metal Gear project.

<![CDATA[Avatar: The Navi Side Of The Story]]> Shoot arrows, ride giant birds, and embrace your inner Predator, all in this Navi gameplay montage for James Cameron's Avatar: The Game.

The main thing I walked away from this video with was a desperate yearning for a new Panzer Dragoon game. I'm not talking Panzer Dragon Saga II or anything - just me riding a dragon around a fantastic fantasy world, doing some stuff. There's not a Panzer Dragoon fan out there that could watch the flying bits of this vid and not feel the same way.

<![CDATA[This Is Activision's New James Bond]]> There's a new James Bond game coming out next year, but current movie Bond Daniel Craig won't be participating. Instead, we get this guy.

That's Adam Croasdell, who plays Walford's Dr Al Jenkins, will also be playing 007 in next year's Activision published, Bizarre Creations developed Bond game. The actor revealed his participation in the game during a recent interview with BBC Asian Network.

"Oddly enough I have just played James Bond in the new James Bond video game - how weird is that? I don't know what the future holds, but I'm always into varying up what comes my way, trying new things."

It makes sense. With Activision planning on serializing the Bond franchise, it was unlikely that Daniel Craig would be available for regular dialogue recording on top of his busy film career. Croasdell is more than happy to step in.

"I think video games and the making of that type of technology, being in a funny one-piece suit and being shot with 60 cameras, I think that's sort of the future. Andy Serkis did it in The Hobbit, and there's a new film Avatar which is James Cameron - it's all that sort of motion capture. I think it's the future, so I was fascinated to see how that would happen.

<![CDATA[NetFlix In Action on the Playstation 3]]> This week Netflix started mailing out the disc needed for Playstation 3 owners to use the movie and television streaming service on their consoles.

Here's a quick look at how the service works on the console once you get the disc. For now, you'll have to pop the disc in to access the Netflix service from the Movie section of your PS3's cross media bar.

The Netflix service is relatively similar to the offering found on the Xbox 360. Although you can't watch a movie with friends online, everything else seems to be there for PS3 owners.

I actually like the interface a bit more on the PS3 than I do the Xbox 360. The PS3 version takes up most of your screen to show off the movies or shows available in a particular area. You can sort by a number of genres, including very specific ones keyed to your tastes, as well as look at your Instant View queue and browse through the selection of TV shows and movies just made available on the service.

Once streaming a video you can pause, rewind, fastforward just like with a disc or downloaded movie.

While this may seem like old hat to Xbox 360 owners, it's got to be a delight for Playstation 3 users, especially those that landed the disc before the weekend.

<![CDATA[First Tekken Movie Sales Art Shows Off Six Iron Fist Fighters]]> The original teaser poster for the movie adaptation of Tekken didn't offer much. Yep, Tekken starts with a "T"... thanks. But this two page sales art spread gives us a better idea of Tekken: The Movie's aesthetic.

Movie site ComingSoon.net spotted the Tekken promo, featuring the fancy tagline "Survival Is No Game," at the American Film Market expo, giving us a first look at some of the movie adaptation's line up. Featured are, to the best of my Tekken knowledge, the movie versions of Law, Heihachi—about to be kicked in the ear by Bryan?—Jin, and the Williams sisters Nina and Anna.

The film's take on the Namco Bandai franchise, directed by Dwight Little, appears to be authentic to the game's virtual fighters. Perhaps a bit too authentic, if we're splitting hairs. Speaking of hair, will Paul Phoenix's 'do make an appearance? Oh I hope so.

What do you think? Stoked to watch Tekken play out while giving your hands a rest? For a bigger and better look, head over to ComingSoon.

<![CDATA[Drake's Voice Actor Says Jackman's the Man]]> In a podcast interview, Nolan North, the voice of Nathan Drake, indicated that Hugh Jackman is the preferred actor - by producers - for the upcoming Uncharted movie.

Desmond - er, Drake - er, North - told the Official Playstation Magazine UK's podcast that not only is Jackman who he'd like to see take on the treasure hunters role, but the film's producers agree too.

Jackman is who I'd like to see. I think the producers would like to see Jackman too, because he has that tough guy exterior, but [...] there's also a lot going on behind his eyes. A lot of emotion and sensitivity on that brusque exterior, and he has great comic timing. He's a phenomenal actor. I just hope I get a part on the movie so I can work with Hugh."

For his part, North said he'd of course "love to do the movie; obviously I'd love to do it as Nathan Drake," however, "I've done film and television and I understand the reality of the business."

Those who follow me on Twitter know I've spent a ton of time in Borderlands lately, but I am also playing Uncharted 2 and for my money, North's work is the best of any big-budget game I've played. And this isn't his first rodeo (Prince of Persia, Assassin's Creed). North does have screen credits, but he's right that he's not a marquee name. And it's a shame. He's a heavyweight in video game voice acting and if this business ever delivers a big Hollywood breakthrough for a game actor or actress, he'd be very deserving.

<![CDATA[A Fresh Look At Assassin's Creed: Lineage]]> Ubisoft gives us a sneak peek at Assassin's Creed: Lineage, the short film series prequel to Assassin's Creed II, launching next week on YouTube.

Announced at the San Diego Comic Con earlier this year, Assassin's Creed: Lineage follows the story of Giovanni Auditore da Firenze, the father of Assassin's Creed II protagonist Ezio. The first of the three short films will debut on October 27th on YouTube, with the remaining two released over the next few weeks leading up to the game's release.

"Ubisoft is excited to share a new Assassin's Creed experience with the public. The Assassin's Creed Lineage film series is part of Ubisoft's ongoing efforts to reinforce its intellectual properties by bringing them to multiple entertainment mediums, providing gamers with a more immersive experience when they play as Ezio, the master assassin of Assassin's Creed II," stated Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer of Ubisoft.

The movies are being developed by Hybride Technologies, the visual effects studio behind 300 and Sin City, which Ubisoft purchased last year for just this sort of project. The results look rather spectacular so far.

Look for the first episode of Assassin's Creed: Lineage next week.

<![CDATA[Press Start 2: Your Princess Is In Another Movie]]> The unapologetically cheesy video game homage film Press Start gets the inevitable sequel next year, as Dark Maze Studios announces the brilliantly named Press Start 2 Continue.

I was a big fan of the original Press Start, a direct-to-DVD affair that had a shoestring budget, ridiculous characters, and a great deal of heart. It was essentially a group of fans lampooning classic video game conventions, riffing on turn-based RPG's ("Why'd you let him hit you?" "It was his turn!"), random switch mechanisms (the main character has to push his bookcase over a switch to open his bathroom door,) and just about everything else.

Producer/director Ed Glaser explains, "The great thing about making these movies is that everyone involved loves the games we're spoofing. From the actors to the set designer to the composer, we all live this stuff on and off camera."

The new film reunites the heroes Zack, Sam, and Lin-Ku, and if that teaser poster is any indication, Count Nefarious Vile might be back to exact his revenge on the world that spurned him, or something.

You can follow the production of the second film at the Dark Maze Productions blog. Looking forward to seeing what they come up with next. Can they top the original? Most likely!

<![CDATA[Guitar Hero's 'Couples' Cameo Profitable for Activision, Film]]> Ever met a Guitar Hero salesman? Me either. Vince Vaughn's character in "Couples Retreat" was made one, however, because he and co-screenwriter John Favreau adore the series. And, how about that, it crowbared a few buxx out of Activision marketing.

Activision joined an all-star list of brands such as Bud Light, Captain Morgan's and Crunch Gym in paying for product placement, but no one got the treatment like Activision, in which a Guitar Hero showdown acts as a key plot device moving the story forward. Variety talked to Will Kassoy, the senior vice president of publishing for Guitar Hero, who said he "laughed hysterically," when he found out co-stars Vaughn and Favreau wrote "Guitar Hero 5" into the script.

"We thought it was a perfect way to showcase the new game," Kassoy said.

Of course it is. It wasn't a free one though, and one can reasonably assume Vaughn and Favreau's choice of Guitar Hero was more business than artistic tribute, and that's fine. That's how movies of this caliber get made.

It hasn't done too bad, though. "Couples Retreat" pulled in $34 million in its first weekend.

<![CDATA[Prop Billboard Gives Up Resistance 3 Date?]]> Here's a billboard spied by a NeoGAF user down in Shreveport, La.. Note the details of the frame - bombed-out gas station, prices are 80 cents higher than the area's average. This is a movie set.

The NeoGAF user (goldsoundz) who spotted this says it's in an area of Shreveport commonly used for filming movies. Other GAFfers pieced together that it's probably for an upcoming movie called Battle: Los Angeles, which is produced by - ding ding ding - Sony's Columbia Pictures. The picture's release date is February 2011.

So, this Resistance 3 billboard would be an advertisement in the film, suggesting that 2011 is when the next Res is on the way. Check out the larger size pic:

The full uncropped pics taken by goldzoundz are over on NeoGAF. Note also the Resistance 3 logo - and the Statue of Liberty forming the vertex of the A. I guess the Chimera are going to lay waste to New York.

I've emailed a press contact for Insomniac Games to ask if they have any comment. Should any be given, I'll put it here.

Variety says Patrick O'Brien, of Electronic Arts' EA Entertainment division, will executive produce the picture with Lucy Bradshaw, the vice president of Spore developer Maxis.

Spore joins a number of other EA titles that have reached deals with Hollwood, including The Sims (Fox); and Army of Two (Universal). Dante's Inferno, Dead Space and Mass Effect also have been set up for production.

Not because I hate Mechwarrior; far from it, I adore Battletech. It's just, giant robot fighting on the big screen has already been perfected in 1990's Robot Jox, and I'd hate to see some people blow a few million dollars in a futile attempt to better it.

The source also reports that a screenplay is being written by Michael Gordon (300, GI Joe), and that the project is currently "in development".
