Here we get our first look at the Mad Catz Modern Warfare 2 lineup. First announced last month, it consists of custom controllers for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, that lovely Cyborg keyboard and a mouse for the PC, the obligatory decals, and a couple of communicators for the console versions.

Perhaps the most intriguing is the Xbox 360 throat communicator, modeled after the same ones the military uses to facilitate clear communication in combat situations. Now I'll be able to hear other Xbox Live users calling me a dickhead with a clarity I've never before experienced! I can't wait.

<![CDATA[Mad Catz Reveals Extensive Modern Warfare 2 Lineup]]> When Mad Catz announced a partnership with Activision to develop Modern Warfare 2 accessories, we expected a couple of branded controllers and maybe a console skin or two. They had a bit more in mind.

Yes, there will be console skins and branded controllers from Mad Catz, but that's just a small selection of the merchandise Mad Catz has up its sleeves. Hell, even the branded controllers are something special, with both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions sporting two additional buttons on the rear, perfect for shifting melee and sprint away from the analog control sticks.

Both consoles are also getting unique communication options - a Bluetooth headset for the PS3 and a military design throat microphone for the 360, which sounds like an excellent solution for those gaming in high-noise environments.

On the PC side of things, Mad Catz is rolling out a game pad, a mouse, and two keyboards, one of which is built off of the Saitek Cyborg line of gaming keyboards, which is the one I currently use. $99 is a bit steep, but I've been extremely satisfied.

For a full listing of products and prices, simply scroll down. The full line is expected to release in conjunction with the game this November.

<![CDATA[SteelSeries' WoW Mouse Isn't Screwing Around]]> SteelSeries doesn't screw around when it comes to making computer gaming peripherals. At BlizzCon 2008 this past weekend they unveiled a World of Warcraft branded gaming mouse that could very well be the most feature-packed pointing device I've ever laid my hands on. The World of Warcraft MMO Gaming Mouse packs an impressive 15 fully programmable buttons across its stylish surface, which can be modified to glow in any of 16 million colors with varying intensities. The software for the device is styled after the WoW interface, allowing for up to 10 different profiles for your different characters, even importing your character information directly from the WoW Armory to make things all convenient-like.

It seems like it would be a bit over-complicated for the average user, but Steel Series assured me that even a novice computer user will be able to easily configure the mouse to suit their particular play style, with over 130 predefined game commands included for easy drag-and-drop macro creation.

While I didn't get much time to play around with the software itself, the mouse has a very nice feel to it, just as I've come to expect from SteelSeries. The extra buttons worry me a bit, but supposedly they will be inactive when you aren't actively playing the game, functioning just like any other high-quality pointing device.

The only downside I can see, aside from possible button confusion, is the price. I'm not sure how many casual WoW players are willing to drop $99 on a mouse, even one as lovely as this. Then again, the package will come complete with a loot card from the World of Warcraft CCG, and free in-game items are a powerful motivator.

The World of Warcraft MMO Gaming Mouse should be in stores next month. I'm looking forward to seeing how it handles some hot Death Knight action, as well as having something new to blame for my complete lack of PVP skills.

<![CDATA[WOLFKING Caters To The Ladies]]> Hey girls! Are you tired of using the same computer peripherals we large, sweaty, boorish men do, but still crave the highest quality gaming gear when you are out spreading girl power to the unwashed masses? Well WOLFKING (What, not WOLFQUEEN?) has got something special for you! They're taking their WARRIOR circular keyboard and TROOPER laser mouse and completely redesigned them from the ground up as part of their new Girl Gamer Gear line, to be available exclusively through Dell!

"Female gamers have an incredibly high set of standards when it comes to quality as well as design," said Bob Costlow, director of sales, WOLFKING. "You can't just paint something pink and say it's for girls. The Girl Gamer products give women access to fully functioning, hardcore gaming devices, but with an aesthetic touch."
Changes include adding special pink coloring to the devices.

And that's it. They added pink. This makes it for girls.

I was going to go into a lengthy tirade about the differences between girl gamers and guy gamers basically coming down to genitalia and sometimes facial hair, neither of which currently affect your ability to play a video game, but every time I talk about women and men, someone takes it the wrong way and I end up getting lambasted for being some kind of chauvinist. Instead, here's a picture of a pony. His name is Lucky. ponylucky.jpgIncidentally, don't Google Image Search the phrase "lucky pony" without your adult filters firmly in place.

(Update): WOLFKING sent me pictures of the items, seen above. As you can tell it is a more subtle pink. Not sure if that's better or worse.

WOLFKING Creates Line of Custom Designed Gaming Devices

Girl Gamer WARRIOR and TROOPER with Flamingo Pink Accents Available Exclusively Through Dell

(Englewood, NJ) - November 20, 2007 - WolfKing, a world leader in the innovation and creation of gaming input devices, today announced it is customizing its award-winning WARRIOR gaming pad and TROOPER gaming mouse to appeal to female PC gamers. The specially designed gaming devices, which will be sold exclusively through Dell, provide the same high level of quality that consumers have come to expect from WOLFKING.

The Girl Gamer WARRIOR (MSRP: $34.99) features the same 54-key circular layout and USB 2.0 plug-and-play capability as the original WARRIOR, but now features a Flamingo Pink accent gradient on top of a full stealth black matte finish, with polished deep black audio keys. It offers all the functionality of the WARRIOR, but with a feminine touch.

The Girl Gamer Gear TROOPER (MSRP: $39.99) also features the Flamingo Pink accent over a 6.4 megapixels-per-second laser mouse with a dpi range of 800-2200. The sense of style doesn't compromise the high-end gaming mouse functionality gamers expect from the TROOPER.

<![CDATA[Razer's CES Showcase]]> razersnake-logo-whitebg.jpg

Razer has been almost single-handedly trying to bring back the love affair PC gamers once had with audio.

There was a time, believe it or not, when I think I cared more about the sounds coming out of my computer than the graphics. But that was a long, long time ago. Razer recently sent me out a pair of their high end Baracuda headphones, which I've just started testing out for a review on Kotaku.

They've also released a pretty high-end sound card and now they're coming out with a set of bi-amplified speakers. The Razer Mako 2.1 speaker system is THX certified and the first desktop system to support THX ground plane and slot speaker technologies.

"The advantage of multimedia and PC speakers is that they can be conveniently positioned on desktops and bookshelves. But, sound reflecting from desktop surfaces interferes with the direct sound, creating uneven frequency response at the listener's ear level," said Laurie Fincham, chief scientist at THX. "The Razer Mako 2.1 is the first multimedia speaker system designed from the ground up to provide optimal performance on the desktop. The THX Ground Plane and Slot Speaker technologies ensure the speaker drivers are very close to the desktop surface, doubling the output and delivering smooth and even response at all frequencies."

Razer is also showing off their new DeathAdder 3G infrared gaming mouse, a keyboard with an iPod dock and a mouse for laptops. Hit the jump for the full spec sheets and press release.

January 8, 2006 - Las Vegas - Razer, a leading manufacturer of high-end precision gaming and lifestyle electronics peripherals, will unveil and provide hands-on demonstrations of the new Razer Mako 2.1 speaker system, Razer DeathAdder infrared sensor mouse, Razer Pro|Type iPod docking keyboard and Razer Pro|Click Mobile Bluetooth notebook mouse at CES, January 8 - 11, 2007, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in South Hall, Booth 35160.

"Razer's new line of products being showcased at CES, which include the Razer Mako, Razer DeathAdder, Razer Pro|Type and the Razer Pro|Click Mobile, truly reflect the future of interactive entertainment," says Robert "Razerguy" Krakoff, president, Razer Group. "This new product lineup continues to express the originality of our ideas by aggressively pursuing what consumers want in design and engineering. We did not get to where we are today by 'playing by the rules'; we arrived here by setting them."

Razer, the creators of the Razer Barracuda gaming audio system, is proud to introduce the Razer Mako 2.1 THX Certified bi-amplified multimedia speaker system at CES 2007. The Razer Mako represents a groundbreaking new desktop speaker design from the sound engineers and scientists of gaming industry leader Razer and audio industry pioneer THX Ltd. The Razer Mako 2.1 is the first desktop speaker system to incorporate THX Ground Plane and THX Slot Speaker technologies, which raise the bar for acoustic fidelity and performance in the desktop category. Whether the listener has connected their desktop computer, gaming console, television, CD deck, or portable MP3 player as the Razer Mako's input source, the system will deliver sonic presentations that are the best-in-class for any 2.1 desktop speaker system.

Features:

THX Certified for premium sound quality and performance.

Patented THX Ground Plane and THX Slot Speaker downward-firing mid-range drivers and tweeters design which creates a spacious soundstage that turns any desktop surface from an acoustic hindrance into an integral part of the soundstage.

True, bi-amplified satellites with two channels of 50W with full digital DSP control.

An overall system frequency range of 30-20,000 Hz and Axial Response Limits of +/- 2dB at 40-18,000 Hz (-6dB at 30 and 20,000Hz).

300W of total system power, with 6 channels @ 50W each.

ClassHD Digital Amplifier technology with full DSP control that makes previous-generation Class AB and Class D amplifiers obsolete.

ClassHD technology scales power in sync with the music, resulting in operation at a much higher efficiency curve, improved Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), improved EMI, reduced idle consumption, and lowered amplifier delay.

For those moments when surrounding silence is needed, the Razer Mako offers an amplified headphone jack on the wired remote control. This allows for improved headphone performance over the standard pass-through found in normal desktop systems.

The sleek Razer design created with premium materials and finishes will deliver best-in-class acoustic performance while maintaining attractive desktop aesthetics.

The Razer DeathAdder 3G infrared sensor gaming mouse is a quantum leap over current generation optical technology. Fully optimized for high speed motions, the Razer DeathAdder features everything needed for high-performance gamers.

A one-touch hub for multi-media programs and everyday computer functions, which includes line-out and two USB ports for convenient connection to other peripherals.

A full set of media hot keys that provide one-touch access to media programs.

A gently sloping wrist rest giving way to an ergonomic design, resulting in a mixture of comfortable usability and a clean minimalist design with a pure white exterior paired with blue ambient light.

<![CDATA[Use Keyboard, Mouse, DualShock On Your 360]]> The Xbox 360 game pad is pretty sweet as is, but there are some folks who will settle for nothing less than keyboard and mouse controls for the first person shooters. I am one of those people. I also happen to really like the PS2's DualShock.

If you're one of "us", the XCM 360 XFPS (great name, guys) might be what you need. Here's what it supports (clearly English is not their first language):

We will release the XCM 360 XFPS very soon, the function of XCM 360 XFPS: 1.Can let your xbox 360 controller has auto fire function. 2.Compatible with PS 2 Dual shock 2 (you can use PS 2 Dual shock 2 controller on Xbox 360 console) 3.Compatible with PC mouse and keyboard, it might be able to use on Halo 3.

Keep in mind that not every game will support KB&M controls, so this may be a crap shoot. Pre-orders are open now, but I'd hold off for a solid review.

<![CDATA[FPS Controller Coming to the Xbox 360?]]> controller3.jpg

Microsoft is playing around with the idea of creating a new 360 controller that is more precise for playing shooters, Shack News reports. Speaking at Gamefest in Seattle, Msoft hardware manager Robert S. Walker said that while Msoft has no plans for future keyboard and mouse support for the 360, they are looking at ways to "modify the right analog stick on the controller to make it more conducive to the precise movements used in shooters and various other genres."

The new controller, if it was created, would not replace the current 360 controller, just be another option, he said. I don't see this as something that really needs any work. Microsoft just needs to get over the whole keyboard and mouse thing and allow developers to create games that support it. Final Fantasy Online already does and it works fine.

<![CDATA[E306: Round Mice and Foot Fragging]]>

Every gamer who's mediocre at shooters — myself included — dreams that they could dominate every public server if only they had the right mouse and keyboard. It can't possibly be that I have the reflexes of a three-toed sloth who lost one of his toes in a power-tool accident. It has nothing to do with the fact that I'm playing against fifteen-year-olds who only stop gaming to empty the bottle. No, it has to be the mouse. That's why the wares offered by GW Systems caught my eye. They sell the RTR-720, a mouse that looks like a cross between a jellyfish and a vegetable scrubber, but in my quest to frag I'm willing to give anything a try. Four buttons adorn the top of this small circular mouse and three buttons are built into the sides. The rep told me to gently flick it with my fingertips, and my attempts to do so exacerbated my ham-handedness rather than masking it. Still, someone more hardcore than me might find it a perfect partner to their supernatural fingertip dexterity.

Also on exhibition was the "Fragpetal," a two-button controller you stick on the floor and control with your feet. It's not meant to replace the keyboard, only to free up a couple keys for more elaborate strafing-jumping-running-shooting combinations. The example they gave was setting one of the buttons to shoot, but their flyer has one of the best sales pitches I've seen so far: "Cast spells with your feet!"

Yeah, man, I want to cast spells with my feet.

<![CDATA[$50 Game Commander Mouse]]> I've never really been much of a mouse snob when it comes to PC gaming. But there's obviously a market for tunable mice. The latest to hit the market comes from Elecom Corporation in Japan. The Game Commander is said to be light weight, ergonomically designed and can be switched between 800 dpi and 1,600 dpi on the fly. I like the look of the thing, but you can never tell with a new mouse design until you play with it for a few days. At $50 it's probably worth checking out.

Hexus Gaming has a review up of Fatal1ty's new gaming mouse. The thing that sorta separates this one from the pack is that it features four buttons. It also has a max DPI of 1600 and a weighted core that you can switch out to suit your gaming needs. Four buttons? What the hell am I supposed to do with my pinkie? I need five buttons man, five!

<![CDATA[Hands On: Nintendo Goomba Mouse]]> I don't play with Goombas

Part Time Gamer posted a quickie review on the retro Goomba mouse. It's a roller that works on both PC and Mac (contrary to what the box says). "I'm really tempted to get the Mario mouse, both to have the complete collection and also to get a mouse that feels better," writes the Part Time Gamer. That, and think of the endless fun you could have making Mario mouse pounce on Goomba mouse. Non-stop Nintendo hilarity.

<![CDATA[360 Keyboarding]]> A reader sends word that friend Mr. Xbob has been using a standard USB keyboard to input text for Live emails and such. Unfortunately, it doesn t seem to work for games.

I was just telling a co-worker that I can t wait until the first strategy game with wireless keyboard and mouse support hit the 360. Some games (RTS) just need to have more input options than a joystick.

<![CDATA[Razer Copperhead=Best Mouse Ever]]>

When my kill-to-death first-person shooter ratio starts slipping from the barely excusable into the sucks-ass red zone I've always had my faithful mouse to blame. But I've got to start searching for another excuse now that the Razer Copperhead is prepping for release. This mouse features a 2,000 dpi laser, adjustable weight and 32kb of memory for storying user profiles. The laser samples at an astounding 1000mhz with a 1ms response time, which is about nine times faster than most mice. It also features nine retina burning blue LEDS wait a second, I think I just found my new excuse: My friggin mouse just bling blinded me.
