@crunks: i thought i was the only one.. i play earthbound at least once a year. it's like checking in on old friends.. i still cannot fathom why nintendo won't bring m3 stateside. i guess they keep it in their pocket in case they need to make a quick buck, but the fact that they let the fan translation go without being sued means there really aren't any plans for it in america.
We should have some sort of photographic genius spin down from the sky and capture this day on camera or something ... "fuzzy pickles" on your 20th, MOTHER.
Version 1.1 patch is out. I still haven't played through the game in English though because I wanna go the flash card route.
Incidentally, I was playing it on my DS Lite earlier today. I have a save file at the beginning of Chapter 5 and I think I want to restart the game for the hell of it.
Maybe I'll just get the new patch and play it on PC.
Mother, I hardly know you. First you ignored me. Then, the next time you came around you gave me so much love, only to vanish again. I hear stories of you loving those across the sea, but not me? WHY?
Why is it called mother? I know that the town was called Mother's Day, but other than that I know nothing.
Truthfully, I have never played this game series before and always find it intriguing when someone cries for a Western release. Well here's hoping for one since I want to see what the big deal is.

@(Zombie) Goldwings: I really see it as something different for each game. For Earthbound, I see the name Mother meaning how important she can be, despite your globetrotting. You go off to all of these places but the one thing that always sticks is that you can always call your mother from any save point and if you don't call your mother from time to time, Ness gets homesick.
Mother 3, I think shows more how far a family is willing to go for a mother. I can't say a whole lot more without ruining some of the story but it's a really strong story I think.
However, I should note that Itoi has said that the name Mother is greatly influenced by John Lennon's song "Mother."
@(Zombie) Goldwings: Part of the reason for the name is that Itoi wanted to give his project a name that deviated from typical naming conventions. There are a million and one "Sword of Something"s and "So-and-so's Revenge" meant to evoke excitement via their title. Giving a warm, pleasant name like "Mother" was meant to help it stand out.
That, and the main character's mother is a strong thematic element in each of the games, though in different ways, as Ueziel points out.
And good on you for giving it a go. Don't let the antiquated battle system deter you; the game's story and overall presentation can be very engaging and moving if you get into it.
Here's hoping you join the ranks of us Mother fans!
Shigesato Itoi is an absolute genius and despite wanting more and more Mother, I know better than to whine about a guy who does so much other stuff as well.
Mother 2 and 3 are two of the best games in the history of all games.
@Ueziel: And it's a shame that Nintendo treats the series like the redheaded stepchild twice removed. It is easily one of the most underrated, under appreciated franchises in all of gaming. While plenty haven't played any of the Earthbound games, I've yet to meet a single person who has who hasn't absolutely fallen in love with the series.
@Sir-Lucius has no pictchar!: I don't believe Nintendo has anything against Mother at all. After all, Iwata was the producer for Mother 3 for literally its entire existence.
There are just some legal factors that aren't explained and won't be and people have made up their own reasonings for it rather than the simplest idea. No company hates their own products.
@Sir-Lucius has no pictchar!:Iwata has said that the various issues around Mother would basically cause them to butcher it to bring it out over here, at least with a re-release of 2.
Iwata feels that if it can't be done right, he won't do it at all. He was the producer you know?
For anyone who looks through the free version and enjoys it, seriously consider purchasing the book. I ordered it within days of being able to do so, and I was completely amazed at the quality of the book. Even if you don't get the preorder goodies, it's worth the money simply to support these guys and all their hard work. The book itself is more professional than your typical 'professional' guides (I'm looking at you, Brady).
As far as why the game was never released, I see a potential problem with the 7... err, cross-dressers that play a rather pivotal role in the game, but beyond that there's nothing terribly objectionable. As I understand it, there has even been excitement amongst industry professionals over the caliber of work present in the game's translation.
All in all, it's a top notch guide and translation job, and all support possible should be given to the guys who made it happen. I think I'm done gushing.
@Testamonium: /agreed, glad i bought a copy. im still not very far in Mother 3, but im loving the earthbound guide-style book nonetheless.
by the by, is everyone else playing this on PSP, or where? i got a DS/GBA homebrew setup but i just like the screen there better.
@TheIrishNinja: I didn't buy the book, but from what I've seen and heard, the quality is quite impressive.
Great game, by the way. And to answer your question, I played through it on my Wii through the homebrew channel. My choices were either on the Wii or my computer, and if I did it on the Wii, I had a better controller, my friends could watch, and I would be less tempted to cheat with save states. I loved Earthbound, but I think that this was even better.
I really think Nintendo is choosing not to release Mother 3 in America because fans have already done it for them. Otherwise, there's no way in hell they'd let someone sell and make a profit off of something like this. They also probably would've attempted to shut down distribution of the fan translation and ROMs of the game.
While I think this is pretty cool of them, it's also pretty lazy, and shows that they really don't care to bother with Earthbound anymore in America. I don't think they're particularly interested in continuing it in Japan as well (especially the creator), and I think the whole franchise might be staying down for good this time around :\
@Mit: I don't know if "lazy" is the right word. I'd always heard there were some other things that were stopping this from coming out in the US.
Somehow I can't imagine a bunch of people at Nintendo just slouching in their chairs at the office sayin' "Awwww, do we have to?" everytime this game gets mentioned.
@Mit: I think using the phrase "is choosing" is kind of a bad idea since the GBA has been pretty obviously dead for quite some time. More like, "they chose" and now it'd be financial suicide to release it. If Nintendo ever does do a full Virtual Console on DSi though, I would like to see them pursue licensing out the fan translation and releasing Mother 3 that way.
@phinehas: Suppose the wording could've been a bit better, but I think it's something they definitely could do, but are simply choosing not to, without much reason (although I'm sure there's atleast some reasoning).
I mean, they just localized Stafy and brought him over here. They localized the Tingle game for Europe. Nintendo doesn't seem to be too shy about localizing games whose success isn't necessarily guaranteed (probably because of how fat their wallets are). I think the biggest reason that we don't have Mother 3 is simply because it's far too late to release something on GBA, and they probably don't want to bother with porting it to DS (even though the development team apparently said they'd be up for it in a heartbeat if asked to). They also probably look at the fanbase clamoring for the game to be released, and notice that they've all already played a fan-translated version of the game, and think that oughta be enough to appease them (especially since they aren't trying to shut any of it down).
@Ueziel: Addressed some of that in my last comment, but yeah, they're definitely able to use that fan-translation, as I believe the translators have said Nintendo could use it if they asked (free of charge I think?).
I think Nintendo is far too prideful to do something like that though, unless they actually hired the translators to work for them.
@Mit: you know, hadnt thought of it like that. sounds true though, which sucks. after smash bros, id so had it in my head HAL was twiddling its thumbs, and hey, why not a 4th-wall breaking, new earthbound for wii? Paper Mario aside, we could use more light-hearted games, and as you said, there's clearly interest.
but then, reviving/pursing a franchise that they considered a commercial flop flies in the face of their strategy this gen.
They guys behind this, Starmen, are geniuses. They're the ones behind the Mother 3 translation and are in general awesome guys. If you find the pdf to be good, I highly suggest buying the handbook to support them. It's 100% fan-made and designed!
@zach a mac rack alack: I totally agree, though... I'm a little pissed at them for not making the pre-order bonuses available in any other way. I simply didn't have the cash to buy it at the time, but I reeeeeeally wanted to. Oh well. Still an awesome handbook for an even more awesome game.
Yeah, its sharp. been sitting on mine for a month now till i finish up Tales of Vesperia.
that said, i hear it plays well (timed-attack wise, etc) on PSP, how's it fare emulated on Wii? that was my original plan, hoping it holds up better than on PC.
The reason why Nintendo won't release Mother 3 in English is because despite the fanbase being extremely vocal which gives the impression that it is huge, it's actually very small and Nintendo understands this.
@OpinionMan: but how much would it cost them when the game's done, translation's done, and frnakly, you're not gonna market a GBA title anyway, so after you comp the tranlators and high-five them, you toss it onto VC for straight profit? i get the argument, but i dont know that it applies here.

Brownie Brown, if I recall correctly, expressed interest in a trilogy cartridge. Nintendo, as per usual, has remained silent on the whole matter.
Edit for redundancy! I love this feature.
