That was absolutely awful to watch, but I strangely enough could not turn away.
Thanks so much Kotaku, for saving me money this holiday season. I'm staying the hell away from this one. I mean come on, 'Heroic Brutality'? I think the only fatalities that seemed cool to me, albeit subtle, were from Deathstroke. That guy seemed to enjoy it.
Mortal Kombat is officially dead to me now. I'm so glad I own MK II - memories of a better time, when developers teetered on the controversial edge of gaming, instead of cowering into their conservative hole they now hide in.
These were awful. F'ing DC Comics. I mean, I knew the game would be toned down to get the T-rating, but this is just terrible. PG-13 movies can be so much more brutal than this, and both are certified as being for teens. Without the over-the-top gore, Mortal Kombat is just a run-of-the-mill fighter.
Bah...I liked most of them. Especially the DC characters moves.
Waaaaaaaaa...No blood! I needs bloods to enjoy MK! I needs gores and boneses and headses being ripped off!
I enjoy the gameplay mechanic of MK. It's not as fluid as Soul Caliber or Virtua Fighter...but I never really liked Virtua Fighter. Perhaps that's why.
The Joker's fatalities were easily the best. The headshot thing wasn't THAT brutal. Why the hell would they sanitize that? Is it because it has guns in it?
The Flash's fatality reminded me of Killer Instinct. I almost expected a "Ultra COMBOOOO!!" scream at the end.
My fave ones were Baraka's first where he twisted his enemy's tits until they died. And Batman's grappling hook one where he sodomized Wonder Woman til' she croaked.
There's just no nice way to say it: this game looks horrible. No amount of story mode exposition can make the "brutalities" seem "in character," and the fatalities just look silly. Ironically, I think this game would have had a better chance without the DC licensing.
People have been calling this outcome for months. All of our initial fears were clearly justified. Maybe the developers can learn a valuable lesson: if you have to spend as much time justifying your creative choices as you spent designing the game, you've probably already failed...
I knew it wasn't be gory, but...can't they be more imaginative than this? If it was flashy I wouldn't have minded the lack of gore as much. Some of these are ok, but a lot of them aren't even worth the effort of memorizing the button inputs to do them.
Wonder Woman blowing up and the classic MK machine falling on and smashing the Joker is some pretty hilarious stuff. More violent than I expected considering the "T" rating and DC comic characters. Not nearly as bloody as I remember MK being back in the day when the series was still worth playing, but still some pretty good stuff.
Is this the new version of the SNES's sweat-blood for the original MK back in the day? A 'T' rated MK is like an 'M' rated Mario. What the hell was Midway thinking? Cuz, you know, all those 'M' rated FPSs don't sell well...
@TRT-X: The Green Lantern power is based solely on strength of will. If you're so exhausted that you can barely stand up, your strength of will is pretty much shot, so yeah, a bullet could probably take you down. Alternately, one could argue that if you hit a point where you can achieve a fatality against GL, then obviously his ring's charge was on the verge of expiring, so you just got lucky about what time of day you got to fight him.

I'll still be renting this one.

Those moves completely suck!
Okay, there's two or three that were kinda cool, but not nearly cool enough to make up for how completely lame and bland this came out to be.

So it's less about Midway wanting to turn MK into a T-rated game...and more about bending over for DC to make this game work.
It was still a terrible idea. Gut the piece that made MK stand out, all for a one-off like this.
BAAAAAD idea. Because when they try to do the next "real" MK game, this is going to be fresh in people's minds.

I mean
3D we have Tekken, Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter
2D we have Guilty Gear, King of Fighters, Street Fighter
Whats left is there for MK to bring to the table?
It was cool long ago but I just don't get why its still around.

Can somebody get that Fatality against Superman so we can put a stamp on how bad of an idea this game ended up being.
