I'm really digging Kano's look. The extra bit of weight, stained clothes and bare feet make him look really scrappy. Like he's really seen some shit...
Oh my god I am so tired of "dark and gritty" the way it is being done nowadays. It is just as cartoonish as anything else. All the characters are caricatures of "bad ass", with the same posture, same ragged, "raw" and dirty look.
For starters, people should scrap out everything normally related to the concepts of "bad ass" and "dark". It is getting tired. That doesn't means people will be riding unicorns either. The thing is that this whole thing is getting old.
You know, some years from know, people will remember this "dark and gritty" design choice the same way we remember late 80's and early 90's colored super muscled overly weaponized exaggerated design fads: as completely boring.
@Fernando Jorge: Welcome to every trend ever. In the late 2010's, people will get tired of whatever the standard is, and it will shift again. It'll happen again in the 2020's, and the 2030's, ad nauseum.
Hell, 20 years from now everything that we think is cool will begin to fall into the 'retro' category, and the campy ironic people will pick it up until it begins to fold itself in to whatever the current trend is, thus shifting it once again. That is, of course, assuming the campy ironic mindset hasn't become ironic...
Just go with the flow and see what changes happen and enjoy what you can in the process.
When it comes to MK, I'm going to believe nothing on the basis of concept art - I mean remember the concept art for MK:Mythologies and remember what we got in the end? Psh that was horrible.
Or that Jax game for that matter.
They have some amazing concept art, but some spectacularly meh execution sometimes.
Although I do like the concepts, we know that Midway will still make the same gameplay. In the end, it's still the same game. I'm a die hard Mortal Kombat 1,2 and 3. Mortal Kombat deserves better than this. Bring back the hype of the original 3's or give the title to Capcom
If Street Fighter, Tekken and Guilty Gear have proven anything, it's that you can have the most ridiculous cast with the most outrageous and unintelligible plots, and people will buy it because the gameplay is good.
Guess what went wrong with the Mortal Kombat series?
dang dude... yeah sonya needs some pants.. but everything else was nice. ESPECIALLY scorpion.. i wonder what this guys sub zero would have looked like.. sure would have liked to have seen my fave mk character.
@shouryuuken: As a former user of Kano, I love this rendition of him. It looks wonderful. He actually has a lot more character with this look (my opinion of course) than he did before. He always seemed lacking compared to the likes of Liu Kang, Kung Lao, or any other character. The loss of the awful red jumpsuit or the ridiculous vest he wore gets a warm welcome from me.
I didn't say it was bad, in fact, if I controlled an army of hot women...these are the outfits I would send them out to fight in. Sonia is only following my instructions, complete with dildo sword.
Only my elite team would be completely naked.
Why you ask? Because it's awesome.
Oh...and before you ask. My men wouldn't fight....they're part of my harem.
@Rachel Fogg: Hey Rach... you bringing up that Sonya is hot reminds me of something: we have some unfinished business to settle. Or have you forgotten? Let me jog your memory. We were in the middle of battle, when you suddenly declared that you had a wedding to go to. Now do you remember?
@geiko: I remember our battle...but I remember passing the battle to Curse Lily, it was a really wonderful wedding...outside the lack of a wedding cake.
@Rachel Fogg: Oh in that case I win. That's a shame though, I love me some wedding cake. I went to this wedding once, and the wedding cake was made up of red velvet cupcakes. Needless to say, it was delicious. Hmmmmm red velvet.
Bring back real models and green-screen photography. THAT is what Mortal Kombat was for me. More than the gore and the fatalities. It was that FMV look that blew my mind as a kid. It's a look that has been completely abandoned in favor of mo-cap and polygons. I think it's time to try it again in an HD, 60FPS era.
@etchasketchist: You know, I agree with you. The FMV element was what I missed with the 3D transition in 4.
I must say though, these character designs are great (except Sonya's which is a ridiculous T&A show). It would be great to have this kind of gritty styling + FMV. John "Sub Zero" Turk in a new outfit like these? HELL YES.
If your opinion was a person, I'd make love to it.
But really, this... using real people as models for the characters is 100% more badass. But! Do not get me wrong, I l-o-v-e this concept art. If a mortal kombat game came out that had an inspired look from the pics above, I'd be all over it. PS- Love the Jack Forst icon- *high five*.
@wirebrain: Really? I mean, besides the color scheme... which he's always kinda had. I think Kano as Terminator and Raiden as the lightning dude from Big Trouble in Little China are more spot-on.
the Sonya one is pretty pathetic. i find it demeaning to guys, not all of us are sex craved teens, some of us can actually comprehend a nice looking woman thats not in a bikini.

It's a shame that this isn't used. These designs are pretty cool.

Sonya really looks absolutely impractical. She looks like she's going to work at a Strip Joint in Compton.

Whatever strip club is allowing that kind of stripper is the strip club I NEED to attend. Seriously.
Imagine if anything pops off like a fight...? How awesome is that!?
