A game that looks to borrow so heavily from the MH franchise really needs to create its own identity as a PSP title.

What better way to do that than via customized bullets and customized clothes.

The "Bullet Edit" feature allows players to customize their bullets with five different "Modules" with settings like Type, Elemental, Distance, Path, etc.

There are also custom costumes, which do not affect your character's abilities, but might affect yours.

GOD EATER is out this February in Japan.

<![CDATA[New Monster Hunter Coming to PSP]]> At a Capcom event in Tokyo over the weekend, the company announced a Monster Hunter spin-off starring the game's cats (or airu as they're called).

Details are scant, but the game's called "Mon Han Nikki Poka Poka Airu Mura". It's for the PSP, and it's not a shooting game.

<![CDATA[Capcom's Plans for PAX... I'm Gonna Need A Bigger Swag Bag]]> I'm packing my bags for the 2009 Penny Arcade Expo – packing empty bags, that is, in which to cram all my anticipated swag.

Luckily, Capcom's supplied me with a list of what they're planning on giving away or offering at their store on the weekend of PAX. That should make my attack strategy planning a bit easier.

The first 250 people to hit up their booth on Friday and Saturday score passes to a Resident Evil 5 PC launch party. At said party, Capcom will be giving away:

—Customized TriCell ID badges (meh)
—RE5 snow globes of dubious snowiness (I thought the game took place in quasi-Saharan Africa?)
—Majini makeovers (I'm not sure if that means they make you look like one or they let one go to work on your face.)

The booth, meanwhile, will have tons of stuff from the Capcom Store that you can pay real money for – like the Street Fighter Femme Fatale sticks Fahey blogged. I might seriously consider forking money over to them, having seen the giant-sized Poogie plush from Monster Hunter. Hopefully, though, some of what's at the store might be part of the giveaways Capcom plans to do throughout the day, so I'll just keep checking back. If my swag bag doesn't fill up, that is.

Oh – and they'll have games, too:

RE5 PC, Spyborgs, Fate/Unlimited Codes, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Lost Planet 2, Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, and more!

See you on the floor, Kotakuites. Like last year, I'm pulling a Plebian act, so you'll probably have an easier time spotting me than Fahey or Totilo.

<![CDATA[Monster Hunter 3 Cheater Banned Until The Year 9999]]> Monster Hunter developer Capcom is taking cheating seriously. Very seriously. That, or it's automatic responses might need a-fixin'.

The below image reads:

Dear Customer

You are presently banned for using modded data to connect online. The ban will be left at 22:49 on 12/12/9999. The next time you violate the terms of use, you will never again be able to connect.

The year 9999 might be a long time, but it's not "never". Never is a long time. 9999? A blink in the space-time continuum.

<![CDATA[Monster Hunter Chinese Rip-Off Trailer]]> Monster Hunter does monster business. PC game Hunter Blade is trying to cash in — or at least ski in Monster Hunter's wake.

Above is a recent trailer for the game. Players slay large prehistoric-looking monsters. So original!

When asked about this title, Capcom reportedly replied, "This title is not licensed by us and has no connection to our company."

<![CDATA[Which Of These Celebs Has Played Monster Hunter The Most?]]> Capcom's last ad campaign features a trio of Japanese celebs playing Monster Hunter. One of them has played MH games a bunch. Another, not so much.

Starring in the ad are model Anna Ishibashi, Japanese Academy Award nominated actor Satoshi Tsumabuki, and comedian Satoshi Inoue.

Ishibashi has logged a mere three hours with the Monster Hunter franchise, Tsumabuki has clocked in at 374 total hours, while funny man Inoue has spent a whopping 4,904 hours (204 days!) with the series. And that's nothing to laugh about.

<![CDATA[Monster Hunter Sets PSP Record In Japan]]> Capcom's Monster Hunter does monster business in Japan. Back in March, we reported that the PSP budget version Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G the Best shipped 3 million copies. Now, it's July.

Known as Monster Hunter Freedom Unite in the West, the game has shipped over 3.5 million copies, making it the first PSP title to hit that mark. The title originally went on sale in October 2008.

<![CDATA[God Eaters Reminds Us of Monster Hunter]]> In Capcom's Monster Hunter franchise, you hunt monsters. In the newly announced God Eaters from Namco Bandai, you hunt monsters.

Out this fall in Japan, God Eaters also offers goodies like character creation and the ability to customize and make weapons (sound familiar?), and like MH, this PSP titles has four player co-op. Just be glad they didn't call it God Eater Hunters.

Or maybe, shame they didn't!

<![CDATA[Sony Japan Launches New PSP Bundles (It's Monster Hunter Time)]]> Sony Japan just announced a couple of new PSP bundles, which combine the latest model of the handheld with a copy of Monster Hunter.

Specifically, it's a copy of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, and the PSP is one of the newer PSP-3000 units (sorry, too early for the PSPgo). The bundle will be offered in two colours, red and blue, which Sony says is "to match the image of the notorious monsters 'Teostra' and 'Lunastra' from the game".

They'll go on sale on July 23, and will cost ¥21,000 (USD$220).

<![CDATA[China's Take On Monster Hunter]]> What better way than to pay Capcom a compliment for its hugely popular Monster Hunter franchise than ripping it off?

Chinese game developers bring the world this: Hunter Blade. You can watch game footage and marvel at the ballsiness of the game — and font, even. It's not Monster Hunter. Oh, no. This is different. This is Hunter Blade.

When asked about this game, Capcom apparently replied, "This title is not licensed by us and has no connection to our company."

<![CDATA[Monster Hunter 3 (tri-) Dated For Japan]]> Action game Monster Hunter 3 (tri-) has a release date. The Capcom developed Wii game will be out in Japan on August 1 with a Limited Edition bundle.

Tri is the third Monster Hunter console game, and it was originally scheduled for the PS3. In fall 2007, it was announced for the Wii because of high PS3 development costs. The other console Monster Hunter titles were released on Sony's PlayStation 2 platform.

Monster Hunter 3 (tri-) has not officially been announced for the West.

<![CDATA[Look! Japanese Kids Dressed Up Like Monster Hunter]]> The spring Dream Party, the twice annual nerd gathering, was recently held in Tokyo. The event primarily shows off games, anime and figurines. But like most of these events, there's bonus cosplaying.

If the number of various cosplayers cosplaying Monster Hunter is any indication, that franchise is popular in Japan. Or so we hear. There are also Final Fantasy IV cosplayers and the obligatory Mai cosplay.

<![CDATA[Capcom Sticking By UMD, For Better Or Worse]]> The writing is on the wall for the poor old UMD. First Patapon 2 goes download-only, then Fate/Unlimited Codes, then we hear another rumour of a UMD-less PlayStation Portable. But it's not dead yet!

No, Capcom will be sticking by Sony's beleaguered proprietary format, telling British trade site MCV:

We certainly do not intend to stop supporting UMD. Certainly for us PSP is very important – more so with Monster Hunter coming – than maybe any other publisher

That should answer any questions you have as to why they're sticking with it. There are millions of people who own Monster Hunter on UMD. Meaning there are millions of people who own PSPs that play Monster Hunter UMDs. If there's only one game left being produced on UMD in the dark, distant future, it will be Monster Hunter.

<![CDATA[How To Take Upskirts In Monster Hunter Frontier]]> A recent issue of Fontier Tsushin, the official Monster Hunter Frontier magazine from Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, has some helpful advice.

In a tongue-planted-firmly-in-cheek article titled "The Way To Take The Screenshots You Want ~ What a Pantsuful world ~", Enterbrain editors give readers a primer on how to take risky pics of fellow players' underpants in PC massively multiplayer online role-playing-game Monster Hunter Frontier.

It even advises players to practice taking screen grabs before going on in the field to find their panty prey and provides a sample map for primo pantsu pics.

There's a quick rundown of the different types of ladies in the game, variations of female drawers and handy excuses like "I'm searching for a contact lens I dropped" to keep you from getting caught.

<![CDATA[Monster Hunter Takes Over Fake Evening News]]> Capcom's Monster Hunter series is huge in Japan, but not in the West. This faux news broadcast is very heavy on PR spin, but does explain the whole phenomenon. Or at least tries to.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite was originally released in Japan in 2008 and has sold over 2 million copies. This June, it'll get a North American release.

<![CDATA[Monster Hunter Hungers For New Currency, Sets Sights On Europe]]> For those not aware, Monster Hunter is big. Well, big in Japan. Outside of the Japan, it's not so big. Which is something Capcom are looking at addressing.

After all, if the series prints money in Japan, which is a relatively small market compared to the US and European ones, imagine how much money Capcom would make if Monster Hunter took off in the West?

It'd be more well than you could imagine.

So, having launched a few Monster Hunter games in the West with little success, with the upcoming Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Capcom are taking things seriously. Capcom Europe PR:

What has been lacking in Europe in the past with the Monster Hunter series is definitely the promotion

The PR and marketing for the last two titles in the series have been very limited, but this time we're taking things far more seriously in terms of the promotion.

If it works...God help us all.

<![CDATA[How Many Is Three Million Copies Of Monster Hunter?]]> Over three million copies of PSP title Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G have been shipped. Three million is a lot! But, let's face it, that figure is on the abstract side.

This PSP points out that three million copies is the equivalent of everyone in Ibaraki Prefecture having a copy of MH 2nd G. For those not familiar with Ibaraki Prefecture, we'll do this add one better: It's roughly the equivalent of everyone in Kuwait having a copy.

So there you go.
