Over on the Ask Capcom forum, SOME DUDE heard from HIS FRIEND that Capcom would only be making Monster Hunter games, cease production on other titles and port PS2 games to the PSP. To which Capcom mouthpiece Christian Svensson replied:

Absolutely 100 percent false... We're still making new PSP games. We may be the most successful PSP publisher in the world with Monster Hunter Portable 2nd and 2ndG. It'd be a difficult decision to defend stopping development when we have such success on the platform.

So, don't worry SOME DUDE!

<![CDATA[Monster Hunter Event for Street Hobos]]> If you really love a game, you often want to find others who share your love. You know, so you can play together, talk about the game and have good times. That's precisely what two Akihabara gamers did when they set up a make-shift Monster Hunter Portable 2nd in front of a construction site. The name of this event? Monster Hunter Portable 2nd Street Real Meeting Place. That meeting consisted of a vinyl tarp. Akiba Blog happened upon this even at 5pm, but doesn't know when it started. By 6pm, it was finished. Our memory of it will never end!

<![CDATA[Capcom Entices Koreans With Costume Jewelry]]>

Figure giveaways are great, sure, but jewelry giveaways are pure class. The first first 10,000 customers who pick up Monster Hunter Portable 2nd in Korea will get limited figurines as well as a bracelet. It even comes in a box! The game was a massive hit in Japan, selling over a gazillion copies in an hour or something. (Actually, it has moved over a mil to date.) The game is getting retitled as Monster Hunter Freedom 2 for its Western release. Hope Capcom's bringing bracelets.

<![CDATA[Monster Hunter Portable 2nd: First PSP Million Shipper (Seller Next?)]]>

On launch day, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd moved over a half a million copies. The game, a smash! Capcom announced that it has shipped a million copies by March 6. It's expected to be the first million seller domestically. And like that, MH2nd breathes new life into the PSP. Wonder if future A-list titles for the PSP will follow?

<![CDATA[Monster Hunter Monster Hit, Sells Half A Million]]>

Know: 50,000 games sold on day one is not a smash hit. 500,000 games sold is. Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 2nd for the PSP did monster business on launch day, moving half a million copies according to early reports (which may overshoot or low-ball the sales figures). Quick inventory of recent portable games with first day sales of 300,000 plus:

  • Dragon Quest Monsters Joker: 400,000 units
  • Pokémon Diamond: 500,000 units
  • Pokémon Pearl: 400,000 units
  • Final Fantasy 3: 300,000 units

And all of those are DS games. And MH2nd isn't! Meaning that probably every single PSP owner in Japan has purchased this game (or eventually will). PSP dead in Japan? Not so thanks to Monster Hunter Portable 2nd. From what I've heard, this game is Capcom's biggest hit since Resident Evil 2! And if that's true, wow, just wow.

<![CDATA[Monster Hunter Portable 2nd Scares Up Business]]>

Not all Japanese gamers may know Crackdown (retitled "Riot Act" here) is hitting today, but I am willing to bet dollars for donuts that most are aware Monster Hunter Portable 2nd drops. Just look at those game boxes! And at those special champagne Monster Hunter bundled PSPs!! And you know what, those boxes are probably empty.

I took this pic earlier today in Tokyo at the Yurakucho Bic Camera software branch. Even though it does look like there are enough copies to go around, I'd be shocked if this game isn't a smash hit. Famitsu is reporting long lines since morning at the Yodobashi Camera in Shinjuku, Bic Camera in Ikebukuro and at the Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara. But, like I said, the Bic Camera in Yurakucho had a bunch this evening. (Because I went to the UNPOPULAR store.) Software sales, sure, but think this game will move hardware?

<![CDATA[Kotaku Magu: This Week's Famitsu Scores [Updated]]]>

For the unfamiliar, Japanese game mag Famitsu has four editors rate each game from 1-10 with "10" being the best. Let's dive on in. This week's games are:

  • Boku wa Koukuu Kanseikan DS (DS): 7, 6, 7, 7
  • Sim City DS (DS): 7, 8, 8, 8

  • Splinter Cell (Xbox 360): 7, 8, 8, 9
  • Trigger Heart (Dreamcast): 7, 6, 6, 6

Big week for PS2 releases, but Monster Portable 2nd for the PSP is the must-get title. Should be a big hit for Capcom! Crackdown and Fire Emblem also pulled in strong reviews as did Dark Kingdom. And wow! There's a Dreamcast title sandwiched in there. Incredible.

<![CDATA[Monster Hunter 2 To Make Monster Money In Japan]]>

Don't count the PSP out just yet. Capcom is reporting that pre-orders for Monster Hunter Portable 2nd have already cleared the 400,000 watermark. The prequel moved 500,000 copies, making it the most successful PSP game in Japan, and the sequel looks jet-set to surpass that. Game drops February 22nd to big sales and big crowds.
