The PSP Needs More Than Monster Hunter

Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G is a huge game in Japan. That title alone has energized the PSP and pushed sales to the top of the chart. In the recent Famitsu, industry pundits gather around to look at the first half of the year. Among the topics covered is of course Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G and why it's popular and what it means for the PSP. Insights abounds, but the pick of the litter is from Japanese game journo Kiyoshi Shin:

The Pokémon generation has shifted over to 2nd G, and you could see this as a shift in the Nintendo DS's audience, too... If it keeps relying on a single game, then the PSP's popularity could be a very temporary thing. Sony Computer Entertainment needs to keep actively backing up its third-party developers; I hope to see that in motion at E3 this month.

Sony does need to parlay MHP2ndG into other big third party games as well if the PSP is going to have real legs.

Portable Gamer Meet Up Places...

Where do Hong Kong gamers go when they want to play some Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G? McDonald's. With burger, fries and WiFi, it's got all you need for a MH meet-up. It's such a popular gamer destination that Hong Kong game mag Gamestation lists all the 24-hour McDonald's in the city for Monster Hunting. According to Spencer at game blog Siliconera:

I don't frequent McDonalds, but I have noticed groups of PSP owners huddled into a booth when I stopped in once for a late night snack. I wasn't aware that this was common in Hong Kong.

The folks in Hong Kong can't be alone. Anyone else know of other WiFi portable gaming hangouts?

Capcom Monster Hunter Monster PSP Holder

Get a grip! Peripheral maker MSY has released out this officially Capcom licensed, enormous steering wheel peripheral thing called the "MONSTER HUNTER GRIP." It's for the PSP Slim & Lite and totally defeats the purpose of both the "slim" and the "lite" part. We guess it's to make it easier to hold onto your PSP during hour after hour of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G play. It'll also make it easier for you to look like a goober.

Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G Sold Over 650,000

According to early sales figures, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G did monster business, selling over 670,000 copies in Japan at launch. That means the sequel out sold the original Monster Hunter Portable, which moved 512,000 copies at launch (497,000 individual copies, plus 15,000 bundles). The breakdown this time around is apparently 652,000 copies of the game and 17,000 PSP game bundles. We'll get official sales data later in the week, but with MHP 2nd G sold out at pretty much every store I've been to, willing to bet these early numbers are pretty accurate.

At the Bic Camera in Ikebukuro, there was already over 200 people in line by 9:30am. In Yurakucho, 200 people also lined up in front of the Bic Camera. Something like 400 people waited at the Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara, while at the Yodobashi Camera in Shinjuku, a whopping 600 folks waited patiently to snag MHP 2ndG. New Monster Hunter PSP

The last Monster Hunter PSP portable pack was so successful that Capcom decided, heck, let's do it again! On March 27th, the ¥25,800 (US $243) bundle goes on sale. It includes a strap, pouch, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G software and a MH PSP. Looks pretty nice, we guess, and it should sell truck loads in Japan. The front isn't so exciting, however. That's okay. Anwyay, take a look for yourself after the jump.

Monster Hunter Event for Street Hobos

If you really love a game, you often want to find others who share your love. You know, so you can play together, talk about the game and have good times. That's precisely what two Akihabara gamers did when they set up a make-shift Monster Hunter Portable 2nd in front of a construction site. The name of this event? Monster Hunter Portable 2nd Street Real Meeting Place. That meeting consisted of a vinyl tarp. Akiba Blog happened upon this even at 5pm, but doesn't know when it started. By 6pm, it was finished. Our memory of it will never end!

The first first 10,000 customers who pick up Monster Hunter Portable 2nd in Korea will get limited figurines as well as a bracelet. It even comes in a box!
