Aside from Bloom and the glare their identical. That brightness problem always comes bad in PS3 shots but any PS3 owners would have already set their brightness right anyway #modernwarfare2
Actually, a lot of this is usually fixed by a simple adjustment in the Playstation's own settings. A lot of people never select Full Range HDMI or Super White to on. This should be the default on TVs that could support it. But I've had a lot of times where I had to point out that option to other users after accidentally discovering it for myself.
It completely does away with the brightness and contrast disparities that usually appears in these screenshots. And in the case between our PS3 and old component cable 360, the difference often ends in favor of the PS3.
But then, we only notice these things when we put our graphics whore glasses on. Otherwise, there's usually no reason to care. Especially with a company as good as Infinity Ward. #modernwarfare2
Not sure whats up with the price in that screenshot, but on Steam last night, it was listed at $59.99. Still too much if you ask me, but on par with the consoles. #modernwarfare2
The PS3 has a different gamma setting than the 360. The 360 gamma is non-linear, which means that you lose some color information (near blacks and near whites are crushed out to black or white) but you get a more dynamic image. The PS3 (on standard settings) has a linear gamma curve, which means that it retains more color information, but the image looks more flat.
Developers usually ignore this, simply because it's not entirely possible, nor all that useful to try to fix it. Every TV has different contrast and brightness settings, and different characteristics, which means that trying to make a game look "the same" gamma and color-wise is just a waste of time, considering it takes users all of five seconds to adjust their display to fit their preference. #modernwarfare2
@adinnieken: Except that it looks washed out in all the pictures. That'd be one hell of a coincidence if a cloud were moving through on the PS3 in *every* picture, and in none of the 360 pictures.
That said, the difference is very slight even when they're side-by-side, so it would be unnoticeable in actual play. Hell, differences in people's displays would make a bigger difference than these screens show. #modernwarfare2
Why is it so bad that non-fanboys get informed opinions on which is the better version. If you have both consoles, you'd be doing yourself a dis-service if you chose without trying to make an informed decision. #modernwarfare2
@Ali-Kharazi: Full RGB mode and a capture device that can actually capture that color mode.
And as I have mentioned in other posts in the past, ATI chips do not render black (brightness less than 1%)which shifts the image rendered completely, forcing the image to be slightly darker by 1% across all brightness levels. #modernwarfare2
What these pictures say to me is that we are lucky to live in an age when such technological marvels are possible, on any console. If you'd shown me those pictures 15 years ago I wouldn't have thought it possible. God only knows what kind of crazy games we'll be playing in another 15... #modernwarfare2
Really, Kotaku? The colors on my PS3 version aren't THAT bland. Good lord. My contrast on my tv is normal, and I set my game contrast to where the "barely read" part can literally be "barely read". Just like when I played Fairytale Fights (for an entire 2 minutes before my retinas started to singe) the colors were WAYYYY too vivid.
My roomie owns a 360. I own a ps3. We made comparisons on my tv.
It LOOKS the BLOODY SAME. Yes.
How could I tell? 4 hdmi ports *2 used of course* and picture on picture *2 screens on the same tv at once*
And also, I have a 52" Panasonic Viera. Just got it from BB not too long ago for a pretty good price since I have inside sources. So yeah. Nothing diff. #modernwarfare2
I know what happened. IW looked at their Steamworks MW2 game monitor and went: "Holy shit, that's a lot of people, we might not be able to handle this flood of players playing at the same time. We need to buy time till we get more servers running. Oh look, it shows here in this Steamajiggery that we can delay players who purchased through Steam, we can buy ourselves more time to handle the most awesomest game this decade." #modernwarfare2
I even hoped the cool kids would get into Valve's games when they attempted to jump into the console market in a big way with TOB. It really looks like Valve will always be low key. I mean, even L4D2 takes a backseat to MW2.
If I had to guess about all this contrast business the PS3 probably has more accurate colors. It seems like thats something Sony would want on a movie machine. The 360 looks better because colors pop but it's actually crushing some of the blacks and over saturating the color.
Its a trick electronic stores use. Similar to turning up the brightness on cheap TVs to make them look better on the shelf.
@Char Aznable: Switching the RGB range will do in a pinch if you don't want to adjust your TV. Will lose some detail in darker areas though. #modernwarfare2
@Koztah: Yeah, what I usually do is adjust the settings on my monitor (I was my 23" 1080P LG for Xberxing). I can get it looking pretty bright, colorful and high-contrast without drowning out lighter blacks and grays. I guess the real solution to the 360's color problem is to get a display capable of compensating for it. Same goes for the PS3's sometimes-lifeless colors. #modernwarfare2

You shouldn't have to do that though. #modernwarfare2

We certainly shouldn't jump to conclusions that in an apples-to-apples comparison the PS3 images look washed out. #modernwarfare2

Why? Sony fanboys are going to see what they want to see, and 360 fanboys are going to see what they want to see.

Or I might be wrong, but am I the only one who sees a difference in colour. I'm sure some settings can change that.
