And we haven't heard squat from it since. So let's catch up with some footage.

This was taken from the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, and shows what the 3D version of the game will look like. There's also a 2D version of the game for less powerful phones which, judging by the concept, sounds awful. But that's just us, as developers Indiagames would have you believe otherwise:

The 2D version, even when I first thought of it, I said 'how can you do a 2D version of BioShock? I'll tell you what: our guys and 2K have really captured the essence of the game in a 2D format. It's really unbelievable. It obviously doesn't look like BioShock as you know it, but it gives you the same essence. The guys are pretty proud of it.

Both versions should be out "soon".

<![CDATA[iPhone Acconts for 14 Percent of All Mobile Game Downloads]]> iPhone appears to be one of the main drivers behind mobile gaming growth, according to the comScore report released on Friday.

iPhone owners accounted for 14 percent of mobile game downloaders in November, with 32.4 percent of all iPhone users reporting they downloaded a game in the month, compared with a market average of 3.8 percent.

That's nearly 10 times the average. No wonder so many companies are hopping onto the iPhone bandwagon.

<![CDATA[Nokia Seeks Out Gaming Innovation, Has Cash]]> Sturgeon's Law states that "Ninety percent of everything is crap". I don't think I am being too controversial by suggesting that if Theodore Sturgeon had ever encountered mobile phone games he would have revised upwards.

There are decent games out there, but there is a lot of dross - derivative, badly designed and poorly implemented.

Nokia want to change all that. They have been running the Mobile Games Innovation Challenge - a competition that asks developers to submit their most innovative game designs for - running under Symbian or Java on N-Gage or standard Nokia handsets

Being Nokia, they have a certain amount of hard cash to throw at the problem and have put up prize money worth €70,000 - that's €40,000 for the winner, €20,000 for second place and €10,000 for the third runner up.

The ten finalists up for the big money are:

* Active Tecnologia e Consultoria Ltda. (Brazil) with Cinemarena – set in a movie theatre, controlling avatars on the big screen
* CreatePlayShare (India) with Ball – play any ball game on your mobile or even create your own new game
* Different Game (Sweden) with Ghost Wire – use your mobile device to communicate with ghosts
* Eclipse Interactive (UK) with Watchers – conspiracy adventure game that uses Nokia Maps and other real world tools to find locations
* Int13 (France) with Kweekies – augmented reality virtual pet game
* Jadestone (Sweden) and C4M (France) with Melokey – a music game for mobile devices where you learn to master songs and play them against other in-game characters to win the hearts of your fans
* LemonQuest (Spain) with Wave Pirates – turn into a pirate navigating the seven seas, looking for gold and glory
* Onur Yazilim (Turkey) with Comet Hunter – a 2-D shooting game which combines the excitement of shooting with natural sound effects made by players themselves
* Simlife (China) with XDancery – a music game where players can touch the screen, draw patterns on screen, shake the device or sing into it to hit the music tempo notes
* TechnoBubble (Spain) with Fun Cam – a mixed reality game that connects your camera on your mobile device to the TV

The winners will be announced at the Nokia Games Summit in Rome on 29 October.

<![CDATA[Japan's Cell Phone Obsession]]> I always thought the phenomenon of cell phones had reached monumental proportions in the U.S., but it's nothing compared to what it's like here in Japan. A ride on the train will have you seeing at least ten to fifteen people on each car with phones out presumably texting or playing games on them. The there's the cell phone charms. They are HUGE over here. Practically everyone has one or two or thirty dangling off their phone. Some are so large they are bigger than the phones. For example, one gal I saw had no less than three small plush animals attached making it impossible to put in a pocket or the tiny purse she was carrying.

Of course, all these phones means a huge market for cell phone games. Almost every booth I went into at TGS had some sort of cell phone game in it and in most cases five or six. Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill and Square Enix all had multiple mobile games attached to them. There were also booths dedicated solely to cell phone games and nothing else. It was a strange phenomenon and something I haven't seen at any other convention I've been to this year. It will be interesting to see if the cell phone games thing catches on in the U.S. the way it has here in Japan. Do you think there is a viable market for this sort of thing and would you buy an MGS or RE phone game if it was made available to you?

<![CDATA[Eidos Buys Uk Mobile Dev]]> morpheme_baloon.jpg

Eidos recently purchased Morpheme, a flash and mobile game developer in the UK with long ties the the publisher.

Develop points out that Morpheme managed to survive in the competitive field of mobile gaming with the likes of EA and Gameloft by focusing on niche and "cheeky" products. Their titles include Everything Explodes, Go To Hell and Balloon Headed Boy.

I have to admit I've never heard of this dev before, but with titles like that, I think I'm going to check out some of their games.

I hope this move means that more of their games will be going the web game route rather than the mobile route because, well, I hate cell phone games.

Bizarre Online points out that the mobile version of Project Gotham Racing is live over on the Glu Mobile site. The site also includes a free demo of the 2D and 3D versions of the game.

I gave it a quick run using the 3D version and it was actually pretty fun. Sure it's not the full experience, but it seems pretty packed for a cell phone game.

It seems like Alten8 can't go a single day without announcing, canceling or resurrecting their sure-to-be-crappy mobile phone game, Office Massacre. First the game was announced as an exciting murder spree featuring your office co-workers! Then it was canceled for being an insensitive murder spree featuring your office co-workers! Now Alten8 have decided to release the game anyway, replacing co-workers with zombie co-workers.

Heck, we love zombies. Look at our April Fool's Day event. But can anyone explain why a game in which you shoot your co-workers in the face is less offensive than a game in which you're shooting your already dead co-workers in the face?

Textually has a blurb about the 24 mobile game. The game uses a series of puzzles and time-based requirements to try and keep the intense pace of an episode of 24. However, it does so without the voice talents of the cast, but the mobile game does boast their likenesses and the 24 countdown clock. Textuality links to a BBC article that talks about what does and doesn't work in the mobile games version of 24 in greater detail.

One of the biggest stumbling blocks in the creation of mobile games is the different hardware used by the countless phones available for mobile gaming. The solution to this problem is standardization, and Next Generation reports that some big names in mobile games are looking to do just that. Activision, Electronic Arts, Konami, Microsoft and Square Enix are trying to find a common ground so that it becomes easier to port their games to different phones. While not "long overdue," the mobile gaming industry has needed some standardization for awhile, now that big name companies are behind it something should get done.

According to a press release at Games Industry, Player One will be making a new cell phone game featuring Mike Tyson. No word on whether Bald Bull and Soda Popinksi will appear beside Iron Mike in the title.
