Pretty soon every single corporation will merge into one and then we'll have what the old folks called a "monopoly" (so successful, it inspired a game!). At that point, we'll be reminded why we decided these monopolies weren't such a good thing in the first place.
Sometimes corporations need to be allowed to fail (what the hell's Atari still doing sticking around?). Midway the last few years was dictionary definition of "Epic Fail."
@Wolf_Dog: The pendulum swings both ways. Eventually there will be a multitude of game companies starting up when credit starts flowing and the economy turns around. This is just part of the business cycle at this point.
@demistate: Exactly, and more to the point... if there ever is only one game company, someone else will come along with a good idea and make better games. Competition is inevitable.
@LTTelamon: And then the monopoly will lower all the prices of their products to "Cheap as Free" so as to starve the up-and-comer into submission, buy the up-and-comer, and the distopia returns.
Ya, good going people, lets hope a company fails. Lets not only put a shit load of people out of work in the middle of a recession, but then lets just eliminate those jobs all together from the the workforce. Now we got all these veteran without jobs competing with fresh faces in the job market making it even more difficult for new blood to get into the industry. Higher this recently let go veteran, or this new face that does not know how things work yet... hmm.. the decisions.
So fucking what if they have not made any really good games for a while, at least they provide employment for a shit load of people. In financial times like these, why do people want to see companies fall and hurt the work force more than it already is?
@Forsakenchild: So, you are saying that eschewing quality production, smart business sense, and profitability should be tolerated and bought into just because some people may lose their jobs? You're fine supporting the status quo where shovelware and mediocre titles dominate the industry and ignoring a problematic business model which obviously isn't working just to stop some people from having to look for work?
I'm sorry to tell you, but it's not the job of the consumer to ensure that the developer's staff stay employed with their own paychecks. Business isn't welfare, and if a company can't produce, it goes under, Midway included. It certainly won't be the first company to shut its doors, assuming this situation pans out that way (which I doubt as the company has too many established IPs to let rot).
@Kobun: No, I am saying a shitload of people losing there jobs while the world is suffering from a recession (I would say just the USA, but he USA is affecting the world) and also eliminating a fuck ton of jobs from the job market is nothing but hurting the work force. Praising and hoping a company fails in this climate is not a good thing.
Honestly though, just cause a lot of people hate their games, there are also probably a lot that like them. I am not trying to claim to know how millions of people feel, though, I am just stating economic facts.
@Forsakenchild: You're being (understandingly) emotional -- not "stating economic facts." Yeah, 500 plus people losing their jobs stinks for them and at a bad time no less, but many companies need to go belly up, downsize, and/or restructure to adjust to the times and fix core problems stopping it from being competitive in the market (a la the US car industry). It's certainly not the end of the world. I strongly doubt Midway will cease functioning in some capacity as the company's history and properties hold too much value, and odds are that most employees will remain employed, though I'm sure job cuts will come as the company will look to curb the $20 million or so it loses on average each year.
Personally, if I ran Midway, I think one method to get some easy profits would be to exploit its back catalog of games and make them available for purchase on XBLA/PSN. I know I'd love to see some older titles such as Gauntlet Legends available with on-line multi-player. Midway's problem is its not a console developer; like Sega and Capcom, its success came from arcades, and the company just never adapted to the changing industry to compete in peoples' homes. Exploit that by revitalizing games like NBA Jam in the modern arcade that is XBLA/PSN.
I wonder how much money it would take to buy the rest of Midway... At .20ish a share, I might actually be able to swing it. Who wants to pool some money and try to get Midway back on the right track? C'mon gang, let's put on a show!
Ouch, there goes any chance of me getting a job at Surreal.
Hopefully someone will buy Midway and resurrect them. But Not EA. Go away EA, shouldnt you be making homely looking Asian characters and other crap based on todays horrible pop culture.
@Godsbigjoke: I disagree. They've got a studio about half a mile from me. It's across the street from the best hot dog joint in the universe (google Hot Dougs if you doubt). The lines outside are huge, constantly. From open to close, basically.
If all of those people are out of jobs, the wait for a dog will go down to below an hour and maybe I can start eating there again. Everybody wins. Oh wait... sorry.
@Spritz: So what did you like, NFL Blitz or Blitz: The League?
The NFL Blitz games were great, arcade-y fun like NBA Jam. But when EA got the NFL license exclusively, that's when the Blitz: The League series came about.
NFL Blitz > Blitz: The League. BUT I'll give Midway a C+ in effort for trying to work around the fact that they can't use real NFL players anymore.
@Jandlecack: ...so you HOPE that the company that helped to bring mature and violent games into the mainstream goes out of business? Does the fact that they exist and still continue to try and make good games just upset you that much? Did Midway touch you inappropriately or kill your dog or something?
@WPennypacker: Nah, more the fact that they fail miserably at making good games. I'm not saying they should go down, I'm just saying that I wouldn't give a damn if they do or don't do, really.
@Cloral: Then I corrected myself with the last post. What difference does it make? Crappy games from crappy companies ceasing to exist doesn't exactly make me cry out loud. No idea why some people feel the need to play the White Knight here, it's completely uncalled for.
tl;dr, back off, I can dislike companies all I want, thank you very much.
