The PS2 had a great CPU and GPU (for when they were designed in the late '90s) and Sony threw all those talented people out on their asses and went to IBM and Toshiba instead. No sympathy.

As big as Sony is, running your own chip plants even for something as big as the Playstation brand, it's typically not a good idea. Of course, seeing how the cost of Cell is strangling price drops AND a bitch to program for, I'm starting to think they should have just made the damn thing themselves.

Wow, maybe I don't know enough about how the business relationship between Sony and IBM worked, but that seems extremely shady. I wonder when Sony found out about this mess.
Wouldn't you want a business partner to let you know if they decide to work with one of your close competitors? Hopefully Sony learns from this and doesn't agree to allow IBM, or whoever, to sell off the plans to other companies, especially competitors... I guess it just didn't occur to them that Microsoft would go about it this way, or that IBM would see nothing wrong with showing the Cell plans to them.
Have to play your cards more closely to the vest Sony, especially when you have the target on your back.

Sony, Toshiba and IBM co-labored and built the Cell.

That is sneaky-and-a-half. How can one company take two separate contracts from competing companies without giving one (or both!) the advanced warning? That seems pretty sketchy if you ask me. Playing both sides of the field is bad business. I shall definitely be picking this one up.

I know it's just business to contract out competing companies, but to have the same people working on both projects seems like a conflict of interest.

The answer is IBM!!!
IBM hasn't been forced to sell at a loss, and they're earning from every console sold.

I think he just meant that IBM makes chips for all three systems
