With MGS3 being my favorite, I am leaning on picking up a PSP3000 largely to finally play MGSPO and this new game. I'm all for new beginings in the franchise, as MGS4 did a good job of wrapping up the tale. But I love the character of Big Boss, so I'm not going to be upset to see them revisit this era.
The teasers were some insane nonsensical letters and numbers.
Another PSP outing for MGS where the mechanics are shifted from the standard. Although this is actually more of a handheld MGS deal than anything.
As awesome as Metal Gear is, I'd like to see Kojima step away from it for a bit, maybe focus on that Castlevania project they're supposed to be overseeing. Prequels to MGS4? Ok, fine. But I'm not sure how many stories there are left to tell in the MGS world without going back and finding out that *gasp* there's someone sneaking around JUST LIKE SNAKE back when the Philosophers were around.
And again: Remakes of MG and MG2 please? Not all of us have obscure consoles from a few decades ago, or can read japanese, or have the second disc to MGS3. The MGS collection only has 1 disc per game :(
Look, if you weren't smart enough to pick up Subsistence when it was out, that's your fault. Don't go begging for remakes just because of your laziness.
Also, your argument for letting Kojima step away and not sure if there's any more stories left in the tale are oxymoronic in your selfish demands.
@Squirrelbot3000: Woah, hey, woah. Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Some of us were late to the party. Does that mean that we're automatically entitled to bullshit from people who bought the game when it was still being produced? In that case, may I be eternally berated by anyone who already owns a copy of Goldeneye should I ever buy my own.
Chill, dude. It's not like he kicked your dog or anything. You shouldn't blame people for playing the version of the game that had less features than yours. I bought Subsistence used, but I didn't buy it while it was still in production. Do I get a beating too? Besides, I agree that the Collection should have come with Subsistence's second disc. It doesn't make sense to me to only include part one of two in what is supposed to be the end-all collection of the early Metal Gear Solid games.
And I for one would love remakes of the first two Metal Gears. As it stands, I find the first almost unplayable and its mechanics needlessly archaic and cumbersome. Metal Gear 2 is much much better in my opinion, but I believe that both could benefit from the gameplay additions provided by the Solid series.
And anyway, he's not asking for any new Metal Gear games. Just remakes of the first two. How does that contradict his notion that there MAY not be any room left in the Metal Gear universe for another dozen plot twists? After all, those games are years old, and their plot revelations since recorded and discovered by many.
And I disagree that asking Kojima to maybe try to work on a different game is selfish. Rather, it's somewhat opposite. After all, having Kojima work on a Castlevania game would benefit the thousands of Castlevania fans out there. Besides, he's not the only one who would like Metal Gear remakes. How is any of that selfish?
@gold163 (° д° ): Whoa, hey, did you read what I said, or did you forget your brain? What I said was the statements were oxymoronic.
He/she's asking for a ZOE 3 instead of another Metal Gear, but "can you remake MG1 & 2 for me anyways, Kthnxbai!"
You CAN obtain Subsistence (not Substance, as you called it) in the secondary market fairly easy. If they can't take the time to hunt for it, then you can't just go making ridiculous remarks that you want remakes so that you CAN play them. You can do that right now if you put your mind and your hunting skills to it.
If you're late to the party, then bring your wallet, because you can still get in on it. So yes, your fault, but you can make up for it.
To preface this, I'm a sucker for all things Metal Gear and will probably end up buying a PSP for this. (I borrowed a friend's to play Portable Ops, although I didn't ever get too far in it. But I digress.)
I'm glad Kojima is working on this, and I'm glad that this part of the story is being explored in a game at last. But his comments about the gameplay sound like changes for the worse to me. I'd rather not pick which stuff to take with me before going on a "mission" -- I'd like to have it all with me, thanks, so I can decide on the fly like in every other MG game barring Portable Ops. How is this a good thing? Similarly, why the need for a "growth feature"? What's wrong with the previous games' growth feature known as getting additional items and weapons?
I hate to sound too negative, and I recognise the need to try new things, but Kojima seems determined to just make the series' gameplay more and more complicated rather than refining it. I did love MGS4 anyway, but Portable Ops (from what I played of it) isn't my type of game at all, and I really wish Kojima would make another game that's simpler and more arcadey like MG1, MG2 and MGS (and to a lesser extent MGS2).
@MysteryPersonX:
I think they're trying to make it so you can plan every mission as one, so that you don't have to run through most of the story in one go.
They must be doing this to make it more accessible for portable gamers.
I sincerely disagree. I have thought about this concept for an MGS game before, and I have to say that I am in love with it. My only concern is that Kojima Productions will not take it far enough. Having a realistic amount of weapons and items is a great idea as long as the game is built with that in mind. This was already implemented in MPO to an extent, so I would like to see even more strategic decision making pre-mission.
Something like, for instance, having intel on your next target for infiltration, and then having to choose a single camouflage set to use for the duration of the mission. It would be a cool mechanic, because maybe you have to sneak through two starkly contrasting areas, like going through a jungle to ultimately get into a building, and hence you would have to make a calculated decision to either risk the jungle with urban-type camo, or sneak through a building with jungle-type camo. Just a thought I had a while back that seems a tad more likely to manifest itself in light of this new press release. Still, from what we have seen it seems that actual camouflage is being supplanted by various types of sneaking suits, or a lack thereof if you consider the "naked" option shown in the trailer, so I'm not holding my breath.
@Ness: Why would you have to run through most of the story in one go? The typical MG game has a save point every 30 seconds or so. Much more frequently than in, say, Portable Ops.
@Slagathorian: MGS also had no behind-the-back 3rd person camera that practically needed seperate readjustment at first, either. Since Subsistence, the MGS series has been expected to have such a floating, 3rd person camera. As such, any MGS5-class game is also expected to have a floating, 3rd person camera, and many people would prefer to have the camera controls conveniently mapped towards the right side of a controller, independent of movement controls and more easily accessible by the right thumb. As it stands, there's no proof or reason to believe that Peace Walker will have an overhead camera a la MGS1 that won't need babysitting. It's logical to believe that it'll use similar controls to Portable Ops, which many people found unacceptable as far as camera controls went.
@gold163 (° д° ): The camera in PO made me long for the overhead view back. This game will inevitably have a floating camera, but hopefully they'll do a better job with the controls for it this time. Somehow.
@MysteryPersonX: It would be enough for the camera recenter button to work the way that it should, instead of ALSO being mapped to the "pull out your weapon and accidentally hold up someone when you're just trying to sneak around" button. I also noticed that MGS4's camera was slightly more zoomed out than in Portable Ops, and really helped for visibility. I always felt that Portable Ops' camera was a bit too zoomed in. Seriously, if they zoomed out even a little more, and allowed for greater periphery, I wouldn't mind the camera controls as much.
So basically what it seems he's saying is this is MGS5. Which is fine by me, considering he has his hand in everything in this game, much like MGS 1-4.
It does make me wonder about Raiden though, and how it will fit into the canon of MGS. Honestly I'm keeping my hopes for Raiden being anything like MGS very low. I just have this feeling it's going to be some dumb downed action game. Who knows, we'll see.
@bakagaijin: Kojima has said that Peace Walker and Rising are both "MGS5." Peace Walker is what he would do post-MGS4, and Rising is where his younger staff would take the series after MGS4. I would say that it is almost a certainty that they are both canon, PW definitely, and probably Rising, though I suppose with Rising we cannot know absolutely until more is revealed about its story.
Anyway, I have faith in Kojima's new team. He was more hands off with MPO and the AC!D titles, and I greatly enjoyed those. On top of that, everything still has to be approved by Kojima before it is released, and he said that he will be more involved in Rising than your average producer would be, so I expect it will be a winner as well.
@bakagaijin: You can't see it? "日" refers to sunny, this will be story of how raiden go to the path to become the cyborg ninja in order to rescue Sunny from the patriots, the real MGS3. Only think that I'm glad is that maybe we will get to at least see a young snake again.
Except for the fact that Sony wants to sell more PSP's, I don't know why he/they decided this should be on PSP only.
Would have been a day 1 pre-order for me if it were on a console. As it stands now, I'll probably end up skipping it -- even though MGS3 was far and away my favorite MGS game. (And one of my favorite games of all time.)
@tslothrop: Deveolopment time maybe. Costs. I wouldn't really make sense to release PW and Rising on consoles within a couple of months of eachother, or economically.
@tslothrop: Not that there were not other considerations, but I think one of the main factors was that Kojima wanted it to be on the PSP. If you read his interviews and listen to KP's podcasts, then you would read/hear that some of this game's mechanics are supposedly much more suited to the PSP than anything else; what those mechanics are, however, is unknown. Also, keep in mind that he had the idea for this game since MPO, pointing to the conclusion that he probably always intended for this to be a PSP game.
Gah... Another reason for me to buy a PSP now. *checks wallet* :( *checks bank account* :) *adjust cost of books, gas and food* D:
There's a difference between being symbolic and forcing meaning into the mundane. That Pre-E3 mess? Please don't do that again.

PS. Countdowns to countdowns to countdowns to announcements were soooo 2008.
Man why couldn't they just make it on ps3 with the MGS4 engine. Instead the consoles get Rising which isn't even using the MGS4 engine so who knows how long we will have to wait for that.
I'm happy to see that Kojima is taking this very seriously. Sony must have really pushed for this, as the PSP is in dire need of another hit. Monster Hunter just doesn't cut it out here in the States.
I'm kinda glad in a way that this article does have slightly grayed out comments. I mean though it's stating the obvious - these kind of announcements bring about people saying they aren't totally interested in the PSP, not enough games for it and then people with lists.
As for the game itself, I'm sure it'll be nice. I strongly feel this is probably what he was looking at Left4Dead for. The four player co-op.
Im sure it wouldn't be tedious; it's a Kojima game we're talking about. They'll adapt the hardware limitations for a seamless gaming experience, but I guess this doesnt really need to be said as it's a given.
Sometimes people need to be reminded of the little things, you know?
@Slagathorian: MGS1 did not have a behind-the-shoulder camera though. It's not being trollish; it's a legitimate criticism to Portable Ops as far as I'm concerned. In MGS1, I fail to see the need for a second analog stick, but if you've played Portable Ops, you know that camera control can be pretty important.
@Slagathorian: Yeah, no... I didn't say anything about analogue. I was talking about having both L and R buttons, but since you mentioned it, having to use the D pad on MGS was freakishly annoying... You DON'T have to use the d-pad, but that means you have to set weapon / item selection buttons to the D pad, which is worse, because you have to sort of cross your hands to switch weapons or items...
Remember, it's not just the second nub the PSP is missing, it's also missing the second L and R buttons.

I for one am looking forward to this game as it looks really promising. For a PSP game even more so.
I don't mind the control scheme of PO, either. It was actually quite good considering there's only one analogue nub.
-The game looks gorgeous
-Kojima is heavily involved in its development
-It is no spinoff
-It will feature new mechanisms and customization
Really, that should be enough reasoning for every self-proclaimed fan of the series to buy the game.

Or, the brown eyed character is not Raiden at all, it's Sunny.
Read it again:
""日" and represents a sunny background and the sunrise that links to RISING.
The "RISING" of "METAL GEAR SOLID RISING" implies "the sun rising," "the sun shining," and "the sun shining on Raiden"
