You can get these games/demos without leaving your house.
Simply make yourself a Japanese PSN account. But be warned, when you transfer games/demos to your PSP, you are required to set it to a specific region....so you can't stockpile games from different regions on your PSP at the same time.
I've got about 20 Japanese, and 5 American PS1 games sitting on my PS3 hard drive right now. When you change regions on your PSP, it will wipe clean all of the games from the previous region on your PSP. Fortunately, the save data from all of your games will remain on your system no matter what it region it is set to. And all of those games will still be sitting on your PS3's/PC's hardrive...so you can just change the region and transfer them back to your PSP an infinite number of times. #valkyriachronicles2
@FarmboyinJapan: Indeed, I was just about to comment with "Green with envy? Why not just download the stuff for yourself?" which is exactly what I plan on doing.
VC2 is one of my most anticipated games of 2010 (perhaps slightly behind FF13, now that I've been reminded how much I love console RPGs by Demon's Souls), I can't wait to play it in English. #valkyriachronicles2
@FarmboyinJapan: Might try this, i've got two psps now (since i got the go) so i might turn my old one into a storage unit for exclusive japanese stuff. How can i pay for items from different regions though, can i pay by credit card or do i need japanese psn cards. #valkyriachronicles2
You could just as easily do that...have one PSP be set to one region. I've got two PSPs as well (1000 and 3000), and I thought about doing that, but I'm sorry...once you've enjoyed the 3000's screen...its extremely tough to go back to the older models. So what I usually do is just wipe my memory card's game data whenever I want to change region...rather than just use a separate PSP for a separate region (the infinitely more convenient option).
In terms of purchasing content with credit cards...while you technically CAN do that...when you sign up for the Japanese PSN, you have to put provide an address as well (don't worry, any bullshit address will work). The thing is, I am pretty sure that the address you provide when you sign up, and and the billing address for the credit card you want to use have to match or its no dice.
I would recommend trying to use the Japanese PSN network cards/tickets. I am pretty sure that play-asia or whoever sells them. #valkyriachronicles2
@Chrysolite:
Word, Dark-Alex has semi retired from the firmware scene so I finally gave up on ever receiving an M33 update and just switched to GEN so I could access the Playstation Store. #valkyriachronicles2
@Chrysolite: Has GEN gotten PS1 emulation and CWCheat working? I've heard that you can't play PS1 ROMs on it anymore, and having a portable copy of Einhander on me at all times is one of the reasons I use CFW in the first place. That and I do enjoy taking screenshots in Monster Hunter. #valkyriachronicles2
Couldn't one make a Japanese account? I mean, it's the PSN. Back when the Killzone 2 demo came out in the UK, weeks before the game's release, people were making UK accounts. I haven't bothered with a Japanese account, but is there something I'm missing that would restrict the same loophole? #valkyriachronicles2
@BoTheDestroyer: I had to deal with parents like that on a regular basis while I was in retail. I felt really bad for the kids. Their parents simply weren't open minded. The occasional grandmother who would come in and tell me how incredible games were would always slightly make up for that though. It's pretty sad when some 70 year old woman has wider eyes than a 20-30 year old mom. #psp
@Dark_Mirage: You know, I would have to agree with that trend. I haven't worked in retail but I've seen instances of the older generation being more open minded and accepting than the middle generation.
Considering what I know now of the ridiculous and hypocritical misconceptions parents have about games, I can safely say that my father was incredibly open minded about games and violence in other media.
Come to think of it I now recall that he bought me Mortal Kombat on the Sega Genesis, but didn't give me the infamous blood code (back when we didn't have the internet). Instead, he used it as an incentive reward if I my report card showed that I wasn't causing trouble at school and doing well.
I was 8. I got my blood code. I also haven't ripped out anyone's spine or set them on fire. Fancy that...
@Dark_Mirage: When I was younger and very excited for Conker's Bad Fur Day, the woman working at Walmart tried talking my mom out of getting it for me. I had to beg and whine the whole time we were there until she got it before we left. Just be glad that you can try to be the opposite of that lady and make some kids very happy. #psp
@Dark_Mirage:
I'm going through the same thing now with my parents. While my dad is always "meh" about what I play and where and how, my mom is pretty close minded.
There's a TV in my house that's only used for gaming and it's in a very bad spot that everyone can see and hear when their going upstairs, lol. I tell my mom she wouldn't have to worry about my loud Xbox annoying anyone or waking up my 4 year old brother if the TV were just in my room, but she won't give me a chance. It's kinda sad to because I'm 17 lol and I'm definitely responsible enough to have a TV in my room for cryin' out loud. #psp
@BoTheDestroyer: Haha, my dad was the same way... I started out on the Genesis as well. Man I miss the 16-bit days.
And I know what that's like Teh Fuzz. Whenever the M rated question came up while parents were buying for kids, I would never pressure them either way. I would just tell them what to expect from the game and let the parents make up their own minds. I've never felt right trying to make a parents decision for them. And besides, I know Splatter House didn't turn me into a steel pipe wielding maniac. #psp
The only reason I'm worried about this game being on the PSP is because there's one analog stick. I played Portable Ops, I know it can be hard to play without having the second stick to move the camera. Let's hope they're able to compensate.
Or release a second analog stick attachment. =3= #psp
@Fo0dNippl3: Did you play the demo? Did you even try to change the controls in Portable Ops? Using the face buttons for camera control and the dpad for actions is suprising good and MGS:PO isn't the first PSP game to do that. #psp
@-MasterDex-: I haven't played the demo but using the face buttons to control the camera in MGPO was a pain. It felt like I was using an N64 controller. #psp
@-MasterDex-: Wasn't there a recent article that said they were going to change the game's controller layout since it took awhile for people to get used to it? #psp
@Dragos83: THere could have been. I don't know. I had no problems with using the face buttons for camera and so on. It worked fine for other PSP games too. More customizability in layouts is welcomed though. #psp
I seriously doubt most people even realize the actual messages Kojima puts into his games. If he thinks they do I really think hes underestimating "humanity". #psp
@Witzbold: Funny you should say that. For Humanities class two weeks ago, a classmate did a presentation on Solid Snake as the most influential person that never lived. #psp
@Americo: Much as I love Metal Gear, that clearly is far from anywhere close to being true. Most people outside of gaming - and quite a few people who do play games - will have never heard, much less care or be influenced by - Snake.
Or was it intended as some kind of jokey thing that I'm taking way too seriously? #psp
@Clive Bavels: The most influential person that never lived is HIGHLY subjective. You're taking things way too seriously. Perhaps to Americo's friend, Snake truly fills that role. #psp
@Witzbold: there are few, who get it. so i'll hold hope that people are trying to get it.
sure the MGS series has crazy influences that span across many forms of culture, wether its history, pop culture, or even current events. all of these variables, if you will, tangle like an eclectic web that evokes humor, intrigue, and retrospective tones, but in that complex web there are beautiful stories that are being told of war, philosophy, and just life in general. one must make the time to pull each web strand and examine it carefully to appreciate its complex structure. Kojima didn't just break the unwritten rules of the experience of gaming, he redefined them. #psp
@zåɳzißårléɠёпȡ: "Life isn't just about passing on your genes. We can leave behind much more than just DNA. Through speech, music, literature and movies... what we've seen, heard, felt ...anger, joy and sorrow... these are the things I will pass on.
That's what I live for. We need to pass the torch, and let our children read our messy and sad history by its light. We have all the magic of the digital age to do that with.
The human race will probably come to an end some time, and new species may rule over this planet. Earth may not be forever, but we still have the responsibility to leave what traces of life we can.
Building the future and keeping the past alive are one and the same thing." - Solid Snake / MGS2 #psp
@Clive Bavels: Actually, our presentations were all based on our opinions on how things are real or hold some sort of symbolism in the real world. #psp
I was at first pretty angry that PSP was getting Peace Walker, while consoles get the shitty cyborg ninja spinoff (Actually, I'm sure it'll end up being an awesome game, but they certainly took the cheap way out). But, the more I think about it, the happier I am that it's going portable. Very rarely do you see a game on portable systems that has the polish, size, and overall feel of a console game. But when you DO get that, it's fantastic, and ultimately, the ability to play that anywhere is extremely rewarding. I think the idea of having console quality [3D] games on portables has for long time just been a dream, but now it's possible on two platforms. It's a shame most developers don't take advantage of this, but I'm glad I saw two games this year that have convinced me to own a PSP. I have no doubt that Peace Walker and Birth By Sleep will surpass most PS2 games, and I feel fantastic knowing I'll be able to experience that on the go.
I guess I'd just say that it's stupid raging at game being on a portable console when you're comparing it to how it would be on the superior system. Birth by Sleep looks fantastic, but if I imagine a game of PS3 scale with graphics like the Final Mix+ trailer instead, it sure looks shitty. So I don't. And I'm excited. #psp

I like the combination of what appears to be an action/strategy game and a role playing game.
Also, does Valkyria Chronicles come out on any other platforms? I thought I saw something for it on PS3...maybe I was wrong. #valkyriachronicles2

Just watched a game play video, looks like my type o' thing!
The blend of real time gun play/tactics/and squad based commanding looks well executed.
I love these little gems that go under the radar here in the states :D
