And it's even worse if you live in one of the countries on Konami's list. Kotaku reader Nasser explains:

I am a Metal Gear solid diehard fan & was so happy to play MGO... I'd tried to purchase the gene expansion of Metal Gear Online but first...the server was 'down' (as usual)...then when they 'fixed' it...u can only purchase the expansion from only selected countries...I live in the Middle-east, & they don’t except any online credit purchase in their site from my country...

I tried to create an American Konami ID use so I can purchase the expansion...and...doesn't work... I tried to contact Konami for help.. But I couldn't find any. I mean... why can't they just put it on the PSN... it's much easier & we will not face any server issues like we usually see in on MGO servers

After Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 Online disaster on the PS3... And these MGO problems... I began to believe that Konami sucks when it comes to online play.
So guys... if there any way to purchase the gene expansion... any trick any thing... please... tell me...I am so desperate

Apparently, there are thirty countries that Konami will not accept credit card purchases from. Hit the jump for those:

Andorra
Bahrain
Bosnia Herzegovina
Bulgaria
Croatia
Cyprus
Czech Republic
Egypt
Estonia
Gibraltar
Hungary
Iceland
India

<![CDATA[ Konami Sorry For MGO Expansion Clusterfuck, But No Fix In Sight ]]> (Not) surprisingly, the online rollout of Konami's first major expansion for Metal Gear Online has been a complete disaster. So what are they doing to make amends? They're...they're...well, they're saying sorry! A notice on the company's site explains that the Gene expansion's release has been "marred by major system related problems resulting in great inconveniences for all our customers". Least they're being honest about it. As for what they're doing about it, however, don't expect a fix anytime soon, as they go on to say "unfortunately there are no permanent solutions we can announce at this present moment".

<![CDATA[ Metal Gear Online Expansion Surprisingly A Huge Technical Disaster ]]> Before Kojima Productions and Konami get Hideo Kojima that editor he so desperately needs, perhaps the company should hire someone who knows how to launch an online multiplayer game. The Metal Gear Online "Gene Expansion" was released yesterday and promptly melted Konami's servers, resulting in the closure of the game's MGO Shop and Reward Shop and difficulty logging in to the service. Some MGO players have reported paying for the new expansion and getting nothing in return.

Konami's solution to some of these issues was to restrict random IP ranges from accessing the shops, in an effort to lighten the load.

The company has also cancelled all Metal Gear Online "Survival" battles planned for this weekend, promising to have a new hamster wheel installed to power the servers as soon as is technically possible.

The tournament kicks off at San Diego Comic-Con, where players can register and compete for prizes. Details for the regionals themselves in North America will be announced soon.

Full details after the jump. Anyone here tournament-worthy?

<![CDATA[ First Metal Gear Online "Gene Expansion" Details ]]> Konami has dropped details on the first Metal Gear Online expansion, known as the "Gene Expansion," on its official web site. The expansion adds some of what you'd expect — three new maps, two new playable characters in Meryl Silverburgh and incompetent incontinent Johnny "Akiba" — and a few things you might not. Included in the expansion, which we don't yet see a price for, is the ability to play as customizable female characters, a "Survival" mode and a Reward Shop for spending your in-game points on new gear. Neat!

<![CDATA[ Metal Gear Online Patched, Now Sneakier, Headshottier ]]> Metal Gear Online players, you've now got two new additions to your Metal Gear Online gameplay. One is a new game mode, called Team Sneaking. This expands on the original "Sneaking" mode, and instead of just having Snake invisible, makes one whole team invisible. The other change is that hosts now have the ability to toggle "Headshots Only", which will punish any kill that's not a bullet to the head.

<![CDATA[ Metal Gear Online Stand Alone Confirmed, Access Numbers Announced ]]> Over the weekend, MGS4 creator Hideo Kojima did a whirlwind autographing tour of Japan. After hitting America and Europe, we've covered this plenty! New bits: At the Yokohama Yodobashi Camera event, Kojima talked up Metal Gear Online, saying:

Domestically, the one-day peak time is 11pm with 12,000 players playing online simultaneously. Worldwide, we've seen about 100,000 connect [to MGO].

Famitsu confirmed the standalone version of Metal Gear Online, which goes on sale for ¥1,800 (US$17) on July 17th.

<![CDATA[ Japanese Retailer Dates Standalone Metal Gear Online ]]> This is totally unconfirmed, but Japanese online retailer Rakuten is listing Metal Gear Online as a standalone title, out next month. According to the Rakuten listing, the game is slated for a July 17th release in Japan and is priced at ¥1,800 (US$16.60). At the Metal Gear 20th Anniversary party last year, Konami hinted at it being a stand alone, but then later decided to include MGO with Metal Gear Solid 4. Guess this is Konami's way of making sure those who don't pick up MGS4 can still enjoy manapult action. We've contacted Kojima Productions and will let you know if we hear anything.

<![CDATA[ Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Review: Kept You Waiting, Huh? ]]> There's a lot riding on Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. In the real world, it's the game that many PlayStation devotees have looked to as system savior, a console exclusive showcase that hopes to rekindle Metal Gear mania on par with Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty for the PlayStation 3's forerunners. In-game, Solid Snake's fate and, naturally, the fate of the world are at stake as the covert operative, a literal product of the Cold War, struggles to survive in a postmodern world in which war has been commoditized and computerized.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is Kojima Productions' series swan song, an epic denouement that's dripping with metaphor and complex narrative, one that will most likely leave you ultimately satisfied rather than thoroughly confused. Getting to that point, we found, was a hell of a ride.

Loved
A Happy Marriage Of Art & Technology: Metal Gear Solid 4 is without a doubt the best looking PlayStation 3 game yet. A masterstroke of high quality art direction and technical prowess make it a feast for the eyes. Characters are modeled and animated beautifully, and the game's varied environments are expertly crafted. The attention to detail is simply stunning, with some of MGS4's clever product placement seemingly getting extra care. The frame rate may not be ideal, but given what's happening on screen, it's hard to quibble.
Being In Control: One of my biggest personal complaints about the Metal Gear Solid series was its complicated control scheme. MGS4 doesn't dumb things down, but introduces more context-sensitive actions and a tightened layout, resulting in less crab-clawing of the DualShock.
Gorgeous Direction:The bizarre and beautiful avant garde intro from Logan may leave players puzzled, but the Kojima directed in-game cinematics rarely stray into art house territory. Outside of a ludicrous breakdancing battle and some melodramatic emotional scenes, they're engaging and unparalleled in their production values.
Fan Service: MGS4 doesn't just dip into two decades of Metal Gear history, it bathes in it. Kojima fans will likely go wild with the game's extensive references to games past—and not just from twenty years of Metal Gear, but from other Kojima helmed titles, like Policenauts and Zone of the Enders. Many beloved characters make repeat appearances, even if some are just in flashback form. There are deviations from standard gameplay that might just blow your fanboy mind.
Great Gadgets: OctoCamo and Otacon's mini-Metal Gear are welcome additions to Snake's arsenal, as is the multifunction Solid Eye system. Upgrading weapons is a breeze, thanks to a generous and easy to use shopping system.
Robust Multiplayer Modes: Metal Gear Online may have initially seemed like an afterthought, but with six modes that range from straightforward Team Deathmatch to Sneaking Mission—in which one team member plays as Snake, another as Metal Gear Mk .II—it's clear Kojima Productions took multiplayer seriously. A fine replacement for the now-dead original MGO.
Comic Relief: Cola swilling monkeys aren't the only source of laughs in this generally gloomy chapter. Kojima and crew poke fun at themselves perfectly, with a welcome dose of MGS in-jokes and toilet humor that, believe it or not, actually makes sense plot-wise.

Hated
Obscene Cut Scene Length: Kojima Productions needs an editor. One portion of the game has the player mostly hands-off for close to an hour, with unnecessarily long cinematics flanking a hard drive install. We like Kojima's blend of action and narrative and often find his self-indulgence endearing, but there is simply no need to see some of this stuff. Gameplay feels like it takes a backseat to long-winded monologue at times, which is a shame, since the mechanics are so masterfully honed in this chapter.
Getting Metal Gear Online Online Is A Hassle: The Konami ID system is overly complicated and confusing, something we can't imagine doing via DualShock. MGO itself was somewhat unstable, resulting in three failed attempts at downloading a software update and occasional server disconnects.
Loading.... There is a somewhat lengthy install at the beginning of the game, plus additional smaller installs prior to each act. Potentially more aggravating are numerous loading screens that break up the action, with one particular thrilling chase sequence suffering most.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is a fascinating specimen, equal parts video game and interactive digital cinema. It is both aided and hampered by Kojima's predilection for extensive dialogue and exposition. It's so thematically layered, so steeped in Metal Gear lore that it might be intimidating to new players—having skipped out on Metal Gear Solid 3, I was concerned about being completely lost—but it shouldn't be. There are at times I wanted to throttle Kojima for his seemingly endless script, wanting to just play the damn game—something you do less and less as the game wears on—but there's still a certain charm to the game's thickly interwoven themes of the economy of war, familial strife, the role of science, and the toll that time takes on the mind and body.

Metal Gear Solid as a series, we hope, is over. It ends on such a high note—despite its numerous flaws—and so succinctly wraps up its voluminous, twenty-year long narrative that we'd hate to see an even older Snake give it another slog. Playing through Metal Gear Solid 4 again, however, is a different story. It's worth another shot.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was developed by Kojima Productions, published by Konami. Retails for $59.99. Available on PlayStation 3. Played single player campaign to completion on "Solid Normal" difficulty. Tested all Metal Gear Online modes and extras.

<![CDATA[ Konami Adds Stuff To Metal Gear Online ]]> Enjoying the Metal Gear Online beta? Course you are. Now go enjoy it some more. Konami have today made two additions to the beta, throwing in not only a new map, but a new gameplay mode as well. The map's called Midtown Maelstrom, and looks a lot like the demo level we got to play at TGS last year. The new gameplay mode's called Sneaking Mission. One guy plays as Solid Snake, everyone else is a guard, with the guards then split into two competing teams. Sounds complicated! Which is probably just the way you like it.

We've gotten reports from various Kotakuites that they are already connected and playing the long-awaited and slightly delayed game. How is it so far? Well reader JP just played a team death match and had this to say:

It's great.
So there you have it. Great. Keep in mind that you'll have to download the 1.2 update before playing, on top of the ridiculously large 1.1 update from earlier. <![CDATA[ Metal Gear Online Beta Now *Planned* For This Friday ]]> Thank goodness that the Kojima Productions team opted for a public beta test of Metal Gear Online. They've almost assuredly learned plenty from the influx of traffic from new-gen Metal Gear hungry gamers, resulting in a non-playable clusterfuck of an MGO beta. After delaying the beta to an unspecified date, the Konami folks now have their collective eyes on Friday April 25. We think it's just one minute after 11:59 PM PDT, but you can never be too sure. Keep the whole day open.

Or don't! The official Metal Gear Online news page stresses that the beta launch "may change due to unforseen [sic] circumstances." There is a tiny glimmer of good news, as the beta has been pushed on the back end, closing on May 11, instead of the fifth, as previously planned. So... Friday it is. Commence breath holding!

<![CDATA[ Konami ID Dojo: Servers Collapse, Beta Postponed ]]> Stick a fork in it, this beta's almost done. Konami have just issued a statement on the Metal Gear Online site, which reads:

...we regret to inform you that due to extraordinary levels of traffic from all around the globe, we have been unable to run the service to the level we expected. As a temporary measure, we will be deferring the start of the US public beta test until we are able to stabilize our server. We would like to apologize for all inconveniences as well as confusion caused.
As a result, the beta's start date - which was meant to be today - has been postponed, with an announcement on a new date expected on Tuesday (Europe: "we will be suspending the European public beta test and restart it once we stabilize our server"). To compensate for this, the beta will be run for another week, and is now due to end on the 11th of May, rather than the 6th. Good thing Konami are doing all this now, such a loooooong time before the game's due for release, because if they left it to the last minute (like, a month and a half before release, say), people might start to worry!

<![CDATA[ Konami ID Dojo: Metal Gear Online? More Like Offline ]]> Another week means one thing: More Metal Gear Online mess-ups! In today's extra special clusterfuck, Konami errors persist. We're getting word that even though the servers are live, but many are getting network errors up the whazoo or this message: "The GAME ID or password is incorrect. Unable to log into server.(0911:00000003)." Keep in mind, these folks are entering their correct user names and ids. Konami's running regular updates on the Japanese Metal Gear Online homepage about how the servers are getting overloaded and how sorry it is for the hassle. Another thing to keep in mind: The Beta starts today! Hooray!! For those unable to log in, here's the online manual. You can read it and imagine the fun you'd be having. That is, if Konami hadn't dropped the ball and then kicked it across the room. We're sure Konami will figure out this internet thing sometime today, tomorrow or maybe even before the game goes on sale this June.

Thanks to all who sent this in.

<![CDATA[ Konami ID Dojo: Site Down, Fix It Time ]]> Smash Bros Dojo is dead. Face it. To fill the void, there's this: the Konami ID Dojo. Bringing you all the latest ID clusterfuck news, today's update is quite exciting. No, it's very exciting. So many people are trying to access the portal site, that Konami's servers are buckling. The Metal Gear Online teaser site posts this message:

Currently, the extraordinary levels of traffic levels are causing great difficulty for our customers in accessing the page.
In order to solve the problem, we will be carrying out emergency maintenance work on the site from 04/18/2008 at 20:00 (GMT+9h).
During maintenance, the KONAMI ID portal site will be taken down and therefore will be inaccessible.
We would like to apologize for any inconveniences caused.

Just wait until, you know, people start playing your game! Then those servers will get a good work out. This, this is just a warm-up. The real shit hits the fan June 12th. Can't wait! (Though, we might have to — that is, if the servers get fucked.)

You know, more people in your beta is probably a good thing. More people checking it out, more potential customers when it actually launches. But hey, whatever! It's your treehouse.

<![CDATA[ Metal Gear Online Is Ready For Download, Not Play ]]> Bring your superfluous IDs and passwords! The Metal Gear Online beta is up and ready for download. Here are some pics from reader PlayingKarrde. The beta doesn't kick off until the 21st, so even if you download MGO, the game won't connect to the server. You can look at these title screens. There's another one after the jump. You can look at that, too. If you like.

<![CDATA[ The Metal Gear Online ID Clusterfuck ]]> Forget it. Your PSN name is not enough for Metal Gear Online. No way, no how. For those getting in on the MGO beta, you're going to need not one ID, but, you ready, two other separate IDs. That's right! Your PSN name is apparently worthless. According to the PlayStation.Blog:

Upon launching and going past the main menu, you'll see that you need to sign up for a Konami ID. What is a Konami ID you ask? It is Konami's service that has actually been around for a while in Japan, which basically allows for a unified account and access across various Konami products and services. Konami ID will be used for the first time in MGO for the US, and using the Konami ID allows for some of the really unique features we plan to offer the community with MGO. Once you hit the Konami ID sign up menu option, you should notice something subtle, but really cool: MGO launches the PS3 web browser from in-game and takes you to the Konami ID registration page. You can also simply visit http://id.konami.net from your favorite Web browser right now and sign up as well, to get a head start!

After the simple registration process, you will attain your Konami ID as well as GAME ID for MGO (the GAME ID is your MGO specific ID, basically).

"Unified account and access"? Isn't that what the PSN name is for? To recap: Your PSN name doesn't mean jacksnot in MGO. You must sign up for two other IDs — one gives you access to "various Konami products and services" and the other is your "GAME ID." Didn't think it was possible to make something sillier than Wii Friend Codes, but Konami has done just that. Congrats, Konami! Somewhere Microsoft execs are smiling and nodding.

<![CDATA[ Metal Gear Solid 4 Beta Confirmed for Europe Next Week ]]> Sony today confirmed that the Metal Gear Online Premiere Beta will be launching in Europe on April 17, just days after the freshly redesigned Playstation Store goes live today. The sexy new store will also have the Lair: Diabolical Dragons Pack and Skyguard Upgrade pack as well as Warhawk: Operation Broken Mirror.

To accompany the launch, the PLAYSTATION Store will see an exciting selection of content available from 17th April, consisting of the launch of the Metal Gear Online Premiere Beta, building up to the launch of the next chapter in one of PlayStation's most loved franchises, Metal gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots. Also available will be Warhawk™: Operation Broken Mirror, a great new addition to the hugely popular Warhawk experience and Lair™: Diabolical Dragons Pack and Skyguard Upgrade pack, offering new and exciting features and functions. There will also be a collection of trailers including the latest for GTA IV, as well as a Sega Superstars tennis demo.

I expect a similar announcement from SCEA later today, mostly because they said yesterday their would be big news today.

<![CDATA[ Metal Gear Solid 4 Pre-order Discs Sneak Out, Beta Hits April 21 ]]> Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4 pre-order program will be kicking off proper very soon, as the bonus disc and beta invites have begun to ship to stores. An IGN board member posted pics yesterday of the Metal Gear Saga 2.0 DVD, the one gamers get when they pre-order the game, which contains a six chapter catch up on all things Metal Gear Solid. According to the poster's recount of the beta details, downloads for the Metal Gear Online trial period begin April 17, with the beta program running April 21 to May 5.

You may want to harass your local GameStop employee by phone before hoofing it down to your local shop, just to make sure they have it in.

<![CDATA[ PlayStation 3 Gets Metal Gear Online Beta In April ]]> In addition to announcing a ship date and hardware bundle for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, SCEA today revealed that a beta for the game's online component will happen before the June release. Metal Gear Online, as you may be aware, will be a separate release from the single player experience, but Metal Gear Solid 4 will come with a "starter pack" that will give gamers a taste of what to expect from the full version.

The multiplayer beta test for Metal Gear Online will kick off in April for those who pre-order the game. Run, do not walk, to your local retailer and bring a fiver with you.

<![CDATA[ Metal Gear Solid 4 To Include Metal Gear Online? ]]> The latest issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine contains news on Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots that may please Metal Gear Online fans. What was once pitched as two completely separate games—one single player, one multi-player—may actually come together in a single MGS4 package. We'd been told by series mainstay Hideo Kojima at Games Convention this year that only limited online play was planned for Metal Gear Solid 4 and that Metal Gear Online would still ship separately, but it seems that Kojima Productions and Konami may have changed their minds.

According to the magazine, MGO will support 16 players in Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill and Team Sneak. Curiously, though, the official mag writes that it's "expecting five maps in the Starter Pack that will provide the basic setup to get your MGS multiplayer fix moving."

Wait, Starter Pack? That doesn't clear it up at all. Do Kojima Productions simply have plans for downloadable content or is the MGO included in MGS4 simply a teaser product?

We're contacting Konami and Kojima Productions reps to learn more.

<![CDATA[ Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Online Playable ]]> As Kojima Productions' Ryan Payton revealed in today's podcast, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Metal Gear Online will both be playable at TGS. The MGS4 demo bit shows close to the game's start, and there will be a special "briefing area" to explain the controllers. There will be a new trailer as well which Payton says might be revealing "too much." So, if you don't want things spoiled, don't watch. Excited? The line starts here!

<![CDATA[ Metal Gear Solid 4 May Feature Limited Online Play, Custom Soundtracks ]]> Two vaguely detailed responses from Hideo Kojima and crew at today's Metal Gear Solid 4 press conference revealed two possible new features for Kojima Productions upcoming tactical espionage action game. When asked a horridly conceived question about the game's soundtrack, Kojima responded with what he described as a bit of a slip, telling the crowd that "there will be a special feature where maybe you can play your favorite [soundtrack]."

Just before that, contradicting information we'd heard from Konami of America, Kojima told us that while Metal Gear Online is a totally independent game, sold separately from Metal Gear Solid 4, the single-player release will feature partial online play. We're not sure if that means Kojima and crew are planning to include just a demo for Metal Gear Online or if it will feature some other facet of the online component. According to the translation, it sounds like the ultimate decision is still up in the air.

Hopefully, we'll be able to catch up with Kojima at Tokyo Game Show to learn more details.

With Metal Gear Solid 4 a totally offline affair, it's up to Metal Gear Online for the PLAYSTATION 3 to pick up the multiplayer slack (and, of course, help defray the cost of that pricey PS3 development).
