Not really anything new though concerning EA. Not that I'm faulting them for this. Videogame publishers/developers are the same with any business, they are out to make money.
If a franchise is successful or looks to be it (ie: Mirror's Edge and Dead Space) then it's perfectly logical to make a new one.
I'm quite relieved he reiterated that this will not be an annual thing they're doing. At least we can give them the benefit of the doubt concerning minor upgrades,rehashes and so on. Maybe this will even give them more push to create new IPs from their own studios instead of buying everyone out.
To paraphrase Saw 2's ad campaign: "Oh yes, there will be Mercs."
But really, why does every half-decent game need to be franchised? (not including cult favorites, which usually end woefully with a single installment or two...)
I'm all for sequels, but only if there's a reason for their existence besides "it prints MONEH!".

Palin still sucks though...
