Like a normal Kotaku thread, this is filled up with a bunch of people crying about how DLC is terrible and it isn't worth your money. Of course Capcom is awful, and releasing a new difficulty is borderline evil. Wait a second, how much did Mega Man games cost back in the day? And how much did you pay for this one?
I guess we could have just asked them to release it at old retail price instead of $10 with some $1-$2 DLC. This game should have been $20 on release regardless, don't know why you guys are so stuck on just complaining all the time.
Seeing as how the link is to IGN Australia... I'm guessing the DLC is new for AU.
But, hey, thanks for reminding me about what I hate about Megaman 9: the DLC. Whether it's the playable Protoman or the harder difficulties, content like that would've been unlocked before the days of DLC.
And it's not like Capcom used the DLC model to expand MM9 further, oh no. All the DLC ever released for the game was announced BEFORE the game's release. Were it an attempt to expand the game, not to make a quick buck, it wouldn't have been annouced before the game was released... and they'd STILL be making content for it. Where's playable versions of other characters, like Roll, Bass, Duo, or hell... even Auto? Maybe even the Robot Masters (though, playing as Splashwoman would be pretty hard...)?
What about an "upgraded" Megaman, where he had his features from Megaman 3 and newer? Don't give me that "they wanted to make it more like the original two games" excuse! Powered Up was a remake of the original, and it had the chargable Mega Buster and sliding as options!
It isn't about the money either, as MM9 probably has the cheapest DLC of any current console game. No, it's the principle of the matter. To this day, I still haven't purchased any of MM9's DLC. As much as I'd love to play as Protoman, I don't think an extra $2 on top of the $10 I already paid for the game warrants it.
@N●Gage Croal: The way to look at it is not so much being gouged an extra $10 for extra features; in this case at least, it feels a lot more like having the option to only pay $10 for a game that would normally be $20, if you're only going to get the $10 worth of value out of it. I'll admit, some of Capcom's DLC hasn't been handled well, but Mega Man 9 seemed to take the right approach. Would you have rather paid $20 for the game, despite it having features you don't care about? Personally, I got what I wanted out of the $10 version, and while I was tempted to pay for the DLC, I definitely felt like I got my money's worth.
@ShadowOdin isn't american: Yeah! It should cost way more!
Damn you Capcom for your sensibly priced add-ons and tiered purchase systems! If you keep this up, I might start to expect I can pay for only the parts of a game I want, and become horribly spoiled because of it.
@Skychrono: Stop drinking the Capcom kool-aid. This whole "tiered pricing" bullshit doesn't exist. You thinking it costs $20 and they take out content to make it $10 is just in your head to justify Capcom's piss-poor DLC schemes. The sooner you realize it the less of an apologist you'll sound.
@N●Gage Croal:
I completely agree. I know there are alot of people that love to respond "If you dont like it dont buy it" and the troll and call someone whiny or poor, but those people are simply idiots. Paying for additional levels or new game mechanics is one thing but paying for difficulty levels, something that is option in every game for free, is just non-sensical. Considering this game was supposed to be a throw back to the older days it just makes that fact stand out all the more. Capcom only does this because of the nostalgia associated with this franchise. But when you compare this to the other titles they have released as downloads it doesnt add up. Bionic Commando is probably the best remake of a classic Ive ever seen. Price? $10. People might say it isnt a big franchise. Ok. SSFT2HD. Complete new art again in HD and probably the title that is most associated with the company. $15. Imagine if they made you pay extra to download Ken. Or if they made you pay for a "Hard" mode. What the hell would you say? Would you sit there and go "Well theyre giving me options". Yes they are. Your options are to either bend over or get on your knees. Choose.
@N●Gage Croal: You know what warrants the DLC prices? The fact that back in the day, this game would have cost me $50. Stop crying over it. The DLC in this game was done right.
And for the record, REAL Mega Man gamers don't want the slide or charge shot. They are for little girls
@N●Gage Croal: The "upgraded Megaman option" is more or less the Protoman mode. Enjoy sliding around while charging your Mega-buster (Proto-buster?) with THAT mode.
Um... I bought Hero AND Superhero mode for my Megaman 9 game that I downloaded from the PSN nearly a year ago, Luke. Are you talking only about the European version of the store or what? Because that mode has been available in the american PSN store since October 2008 give or take. I thought this was available everywhere in all consoles (except Japan where Megaman 9 was Wii exclusive until recently).
If this is only for the European/Australian side of things, you might want to make a note about it :)
@NoBullet: Back before online consoles, Mega Man 9 would have cost way, way more than $10. Even with all of its DLC, it's still less than $20 total, so it's a much better deal than in the olden days.
@CrazedGeek: True, but by that logic, any contemporary game would have sold for a fortune in the 80's or 90's because its superior graphics would have blown us away back then; thus, by the same logic, any of today's high priced games are, relatively speaking, a "bargain."
It really isnt THAT hard of a game, just requires alot of timing with your jumps and blasts, the order you do it in also can help, cause certain weapons, like that homing bee one, help out alot throughout the stages. though I really only used it to grab items.
@One Man Freak Show: It's not really that hard a game. You just have to jump over the pits and dodge the enemies, and once in a while you just have to shoot the bosses with your lazors. I mean, it's practically *easy* when you think of it like that.
Probably unlocks 'absurd mode' where you start the game in total darkness, equipped only with a toothless rake and your legendary cyborg wit to carry you through 255 levels of unending, sadistic capcom terror. Either that or different pants.
Mega Man 9 became my second favorite game of 2008. So much so that I bought it three times to show my support. I can now get my Blue Bomber fix on any current gen console I happen to be on.
The 8bit graphical downgrade is only part of it. The decision to 'dumb' it down back to its roots, back to when it first made its splash in the gaming world, was an inspired one. In this age of always changing for the sake of change to draw in the next bullet point target demographic, it was refreshing to see Capcom realize what made Mega Man such a AAA franchise back in the day and go back to it.
Unforgiving difficulty, trial and error memorization of enemy placements and patterns, rock paper scissors boss battles, phenomenally catchy music, a plot that didn't even pretend to be in depth, and sheer overall fun. Thats what drew me to Mega Man 1 back when I was six. And its what brought me to Mega Man 9 when I was 24. I love how they've even added touches of current technology to it. The physics based swinging platforms, the advent of DLC (long live Proto Man mode and the Survival-esque mode), and trophies/achievements all make it one of the best PSN/WiiWare/XBLA games to come out, well, ever.
Now if only Capcom would give us Powered Up 2 and Maverick Hunter 2.
I swear this guy is trolling, unless there is some ridiculous process none could fathom to get the easter egg(like with the recent donkey kong easter egg) I don't see how this secret has yet to be found. Almost a year now since the release, hacker have dug up unused sprites, people have found all kinds of stuff and the secret has yet to be found? HAXXORZ!!!
