@Atheist Jew: I'm with you. Look, I'm not saying the Battletech Universe is sacred (I mean, Christ, the original Inner Sphere houses were PARODIES of foreign countries. Kurita's mechs look like Samurais and their culture is all Geishas, Samurai, Buddhist Monks and Yakuza? I mean, REALLY!?), and all plot lines basically boil down to "and than they invaded them with giant stompy robots" but... Just.
No. So... so much that could get fucked up, if that's easy to believe.
('Lest people think I bash on my beloved Battletech Universe, I say only this: Hanse Davion is the shit, Kai Allard Liao is a whiny bitch, and Sun Tzu Liao is not to be fucked with. )
@Evdor: You actually LIKED Sun Tzu Liao? I couldn't WAIT for that bastard to get murdered...although I think I stopped reading the books after the Inner Sphere task force exterminated the Smoke Jaguars so I don't really know what happened to him.
Yes, Kai was a whiny bitch, but he and Phelan Kell/Wolf are the best MechWarriors in the entirety of humanity! That gives him some leeway. Phelan is much more badass regardless.
Hanse Davion was indeed the shit, but I tended to like Victor morso. Don't get me started on Katrina.
@Atheist Jew: "Liking" Sun Tzu is a bit strong of a word "Not fucking with him" though? Hell yeah.Yeah, I think you didn't get far enough to understand why. The tenor of the act is the way he was portrayed early clan wars was the way he was expected to act, by both his enemies and by Romano. He did it in part to avoid Romano's ire and for people to dismiss him the same way they did Romano. Many people acted the same way they did, and were quite surprised when he kicked the holy shit out of St. Ives and turned House Liao into one of the most potent Inner Sphere forces again. I think he was made head of the new Star League too, apparently Victor's idea to keep him in check.
Also yes, I also forgot about Natasha Kerensky, queen badass. Unfortunately, she gets a few minus points for getting killed in the dumbest way possible.
@JoRo1986: You should be ashamed for even acknowledging that piece of shit movie's existence, and you should be ashamed for reminding all of us that that piece of shit movie exists.
Transformers 2 a better giant robot movie than Robot Jox? Are you crazy? Are you insane? Transformers 2 isn't a better anything than anything, and Robot Jox is a masterpiece of cinema, because it's so damn bad. But there's a difference! Robot Jox is one of those movies that falls within the "so bad it's great" category of films, like Mars Attacks and many James Bond movies. Transformers 2 is just plain bad.
@JoRo1986: That heat coming from your computer/laptop? That's not the motor running hot. That's my hate for you digitally seething Through your god-damn internet connection.
I had to deal with this one a lot. http://wavs.unclebubby.com/wav/Mechwarrior/shutingdown.wav
Probably why I mostly just use Ballistic Weapons these days.
*edit* shucks, you used to be able to just paste a link in. Never bothered to learn how to post a link in custom text, and I'm too lazy to learn it right now.
As someone who played MW4 for half a decade, I believe that the gameplay - in its base form - holds up to this day.
Once you start mucking around with the two major mods out there (NBT HC and MekTek MekPak), though, things start getting dicey. Your tastes really have to align with each one's respective changes in order to truly enjoy things.
Still, I would recommend folks to check it out. I had a lot of fun with it over the years, and the customization of 'Mechs is still a strong and enjoyable cornerstone of the experience.
@Xelmon: It depends on how you play and who you play with. The MekPak's have caught flak over the years for introducing 'Mechs that were non-canon and/or far more durable than the baseline standard.
Eventually, things were changed for the "better," but not before the community splintered into factions of supporters and dissenters. The Great Forum Wars led to a lot of folks giving up on the game due to the bickering and bullheadedness of each side.
Sadly, the community is nothing more than a shell of the game's glory days.
@Mr. Mattican (Puts on Monicle): Yea I was referring to that, but seeing as it doesnt use a authentication server for anything, that wouldnt happen heh.
Squat is good! I haven't played a Battletech game in years! Talk about a brand that works SOOO much better electronically than on paper... filling in all the little heat sink bubbles... ugh. Time to pilot an Atlas again!
@StrikerGold: Hahahaha. Every turn. and tracking al the internal damge, tracking ammo on every Mech, all the rules, calculating the die roll for hit (taking range, amount moved, amount opponent moved LAST TURN, intervening terrain, the amount of heat on the mech...)
Amazing, fantastic, awesome, mind blowing. Did you know, fellow Steel Battalion owners, that with an XBOX-USB2 adapter, your Steel Battalion controller can be made to work with MechWarrior 4, Freespace 2, and other games?
@Atheist Jew: I should have included a link to begin with. My apologies! Getting it to work requires drivers and the adapter of course, and some other things!
Here is a hastily cobbled together website of links and instructions on how to get it working.
Additionally, here is a link to an article Kotaku had on the very subject back in 2006, which links to the same site.
@Raziel: Hah! Talk to Capcom. Fat chance of them ever doing something so awesome as releasing a game like Steel Battalion again, and as for supporting it? Hah!
Now that, my friends, is a deal. I haven't played a MechWarrior game since MW2, but I might give this a try on my roommate's computer if they launch it before I move out.
@Archaotic: Whereas I started the series with 4, then went on to Mechassault (inferior, I know). And I lost my copy of 4 long ago. So for me, this was one big "!!!" followed by a big, dopey grin.
Dangeresque (Kojima-san doesn't have to make Metal Gear any more) was starred
Dangeresque (Kojima-san doesn't have to make Metal Gear any more) was unstarred
@Archaotic: From memory the Mechwarrior games were all developed by different companies so do have quite a different feel to one another. MW2 seems to be the favourite of many, although it's hard to say how many stuck with the series to 4.
Interesting to see this and Daggerfall announced as free downloads in the same day too. I wonder what other old gems games companies are planning to release this way?
@Archaotic: 4 is pretty good, and is probably the only MW game that actually gave an advantage to speedier light-and heavy mechs, because they were fast enough to make hitting them at full tilt difficult, especially with single-fire weapons. They also required a bit more 'skill' to play, because they bounced around a lot more and made firing at full speed much harder. It was extremely good, though I have a few complaints (Pulse lasers were useless, headshots were almost worthless because they were in 1,000,000 and had built-in mechanics that required two hits at minimum, meaning that gauss cannon shots were wasted, but UAC rounds could decimate them.
Frankly, if they take MW4, and scale back the whole post-clan mech CRAZINESS, they'll have one hell of a game.
@MattB: Correct. Mechwarrior 4 was developed by FASA interactive, Microsoft's brand (they later went on to make Shadowrun and die). Mechwarrior 3 was by Micropose (and followed the Tabletop game to a literal fault. Targeting computers were *broken*). Activision (yes, THAT Activision) produced 2 and 2: Merc.
Ok, 3015. If I remember correctly this would be the Davion-Steiner wedding? So we'll not have The Clans, and the Atlas will truly be the scariest thing around. I just want a Wolfhound, but sadly I don't think that will happen.
That trailer was simply amazing. I pray that those are ingame graphics. I also pray that this game is sim like. I have faih that this dev, despite it's past performances on other robot games, will treat this franchise with the upmost respect and deliver unto us an amazing mechwarrior game

Erm... Thinks for a while Maybe?
Never the less, no. Game, no movie still stands.

This is a thing that needs to be stopped. This must not happen. MechWarrior is fine without a fucking movie. NO. STOP. YOU CAN'T.

No. So... so much that could get fucked up, if that's easy to believe.

Do explain! Back in the day I found out about the MekPak, but never got into it - I think because I didn't have Mercs.
What makes it dicey? Unbalance between Clan and IS tech?
