And Ubisoft have just announced a release date for World in Conflict: Soviet Assault.

Good news, as the release of the expansion was up in the air following the demise of former publishers Sierra. Well, good news for PC owners. There's no mention of the planned console versions. Not a word.

Soviet Assault on PC will include both the original game as well as the expansion, which lets you take command of Soviet forces. Those who already own the original game will have the option of downloading the expansion by itself.

<![CDATA[Ubisoft's Massive MMO Plans Start Small]]> So now that Ubisoft has purchased World in Conflict development studio Massive Entertainment from Activision, what are they going to do with them? Speaking at the 16th Annual BMO Capitol Markets Interactive Entertainment conference this morning, Ubisoft President and CEO Yves Guillemot explains that Massive will play a key role in Ubisoft's MMO strategy.

"We just bought it from them since those guys have Blizzard so they didn't need that studio as much as we do, and those guys are extremely strong in RTS (real-time strategy), so they are going to help us also get closer to the MMO space. Our goal there is to go first with light MMOs...that have been extremely popular in China but are also coming in the U.S. and Europe and are generating lots of good revenue, so our goal is first to start with light MMOs, and then in the future also come with RPG and RTS, also in the MMO space."

See, you can't just toss out any old MMORPG. You have to build to that. I'm sure whatever they come up with will be just lovely with the Massive team on the job.

<![CDATA[Activision Blizzard May Dump Massive, Swordfish Studios]]> Activision Blizzard is the result of a merger between two large companies, each with several studios, projects and different teams. So a merger between the two means some things are going to get shuffled around. Jobs will very likely be lost, and projects might get shifted.

Earlier we reported that Sierra's Crash and Spyro titles would be hauled up for publishing under the new label, leaving a question mark hanging around titles like Brutal Legend and Ghostbusters. Earlier today, Double Fine's Tim Schafer assured fans that "Brütal Legend is fine," and we've contacted Terminal Reality on the fate of Ghostbusters and will update with any response we receive.

Meanwhile, however, Activision Blizzard has released a statement that sheds some light on where it's looking to make changes:

The company intends to adapt the Vivendi Games' studio operations to better align the studio structure against the new product slate. We will realign staffing at Radical Entertainment and High Moon Studios to support our resulting slate. We are also exploring options regarding Massive Entertainment and Swordfish Studios, including the possibility of divestiture.

Additionally, we are evaluating options regarding two non-strategic business units Vivendi Games Mobile and Sierra Online, which provides casual games for the PC and Xbox® Live® Marketplace, including the possibility of divesting these business units.

The company declined to comment further.

<![CDATA[Details On World In Conflict Console Version]]> World in Conflict is coming to the 360 and PS3. We already knew that. What we didn't know about this console-specific game is that it'll be called World in Conflict: Soviet Assault, and will take the PC game, give it console-specific controls and give you the chance to also command the invading Soviet forces. Yes, yes, In Soviet Russia, invaders command you, etc, etc. PC owners, for you, nothing else has changed: you'll get all the new content as an expansion pack, same time as the console versions arrive (which is "Fall").

<![CDATA[World In Conflict Slated For Consoles This Fall]]> Good news, console RTSers! Sierra/Massive Entertainment's acclaimed post-Cold War real-time strategy title World in Conflict is spreading from the PC to the Xbox 360 and PS3. Expected to launch fall 2008, these console versions won't just be a port of the original World in Conflict, instead including extra "new content" planned for both the singleplayer campaign and online multiplayer.

For existing PC players, this new content will come in the form of an add-on. Potential pricing has not been discussed. As for me, I just feel lucky that I'm no longer forced to own a PC to play a lot of games formerly reserved for the platform, even if the authenticity of experience isn't always duplicated.

World in Conflict destined for Fall 2008 release

<![CDATA[World In Conflict Q&A]]> In World In Conflict's latest Q&A, the developers hint at things to come.

Q: Will there be an 'Army Creator' feature where you can create your own faction with your own units in-game, define bonuses etc?
So will there? Short answer, no. Long answer...no. Seriously, that may be the most deflating question ever to ask an RTS developer: "So, does your game do all this awesome stuff that you've never, ever hinted at or alluded to?" But there's some good stuff here if you are interested in Word in Conflict.

<![CDATA[Gallery: World in Conflict 360]]> World in Conflict is turning a lot of PC gamer heads, and since it was confirmed for a simultaneous release on the Xbox 360 this September, console gamers are beginning to sit up and take notice. Not much of a war gamer myself, but looking at the Xbox 360 screens for the game I can see part of what all the excitement is about. This is one fine-looking alternate reality cold war action strategy game, console and PC alike. Between the looks and the intriguing 'what if the cold war never ended?' storyline, I could certainly see myself jumping on this bandwagon.
