Back at TGS last year he claimed that Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games would sell four million copies, matching the sales of the original Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis. Expectation met, and neatly surpassed. In three months the title has sold over five million copies worldwide as gamers flocked to the store in droves to witness what sort of train wreck occurs when you let Sega screw around with both their own characters and Nintendo's, while parents bought up copies because it was the most kid friendly game they could find without Billy Ray Cyrus's daughter on the front cover. Since they mention both in the press release, I am assuming this covers both the DS and Wii versions of the game, but they're equally mediocre so I'll allow it. Congratulations Sega for proving once again that a game can sell based on characters alone.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games™ Hits 5 Million in Global Sales

Founding Fathers of Video Games, SEGA and Nintendo, Find Winning Formula with First-Ever Pairing of Famous Mascots

TOKYO—(BUSINESS WIRE)—SEGA® Corporation today announced that its history-making video game title, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games™, has sold five million copies worldwide in just over three months. Developed by SEGA for the Wii™ video game system and the Nintendo DS™ system, with creative input and executive milestone approvals by Nintendo's developers, the title brought together for the first time the two most beloved icons in the entertainment industry. In the spirit of the Olympic Games, the legendary mascots also brought friends from their storied franchises along, including Luigi™, Knuckles™, Yoshi® and Tails™, to compete in a variety of Olympic events.

"With adored icons and fun game play, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has shot to the top of the sales charts and is clearly resonating with the growing audience of casual gamers that want an engaging and accessible gaming experience," said Simon Jeffery, President and COO, SEGA of America.

Published by SEGA across Europe and North America, and by Nintendo in Japan, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games made its worldwide debut on November 6, 2007, when the Wii version hit store shelves in the United States. According to the NPD Group, which tracks sales data in the United States, the game was one of the top-ten best-sellers in the United States - across all platforms - in the critical holiday sales month of December.

When Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games launched in Europe just days later, it was an immediate hit, rising rapidly to the top of sales charts. Mario & Sonic became the best-ever performing Wii game over the seven-day period that ended on December 11, 2007. In January, Mario & Sonic was the best-selling video game in England across all formats.

"The market for entertaining games that everyone can enjoy is growing faster than any other segment in the industry, thanks in part to the explosive popularity of Wii and Nintendo DS," continued Jeffery. "A key element of our growth strategy at SEGA is to develop and publish games that appeal to this expanding market."

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is licensed through a worldwide partnership with International Sports Multimedia (ISM), the exclusive Interactive Entertainment Software licensee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

<![CDATA[Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games DS]]>

I was absolutely not on board the good ship Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games when it set sail, and this despite having witnessed, sorta, McWhertor school a demo guy in the game while playing as Princess Peach. But the DS version, that looks like it might be worth checking out.

<![CDATA[Mario & Sonic Sprint To Early Release Date]]> We posted earlier today of a handful of new events that had been added to Sega's Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games, but missed out on some North American specific details. Good news for those looking for an answer to the burning questions "Who's faster, Mario or Sonic?" and "Who's a better fencer, Luigi or Tails?" as Sega has bumped up the release date to November 6 for the American release. After being jostled around, from November 13 to November 20, it seems they've settled on the sixth, also noting the Wii game's new "gold" status.

If you missed out on my hands-on impressions while wearing a casual v-neck t-shirt, don't pass them up again. And turn up those speakers for maximum Princess Peach punishment!

<![CDATA[Sonic, Mario, Dreams and Mii]]> If you thought that a fat Italian plumber outrunning Sonic the Hedgehog was pretty implausible, imagine my lazy ass doing it. Sega has announced Mii integration in the upcoming Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, allowing you to use your Mii to compete against gaming legends, finally allowing me to live out my fantasy of stabbing Wario in the face with an epee, though the lack of a full-contact co-ed wrestling event leaves another unfulfilled.

Along with the Mii integration, Sega has also confirmed four Dream events to be included in the game on top of the extensive lineup of real Olympic events. These take place in colorful, game-inspired stages laced with power-ups and special moves, appeasing the Mario and Sonic purists out there. There's a Dream Race on the Sandhill Race Course, Dream Platform Diving which sounds a bit like Pilot Wings skydiving, Dream Fencing on jungle beach, and Dream Table Tennis in a 'sci-fi wonderland'. Hit the jump for more details while I go tweak my Mii in preparation.

Mii functionality and Dream events confirmed for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has not only a massive line-up of real-life Olympic events, but SEGA can today proudly confirm that their much anticipated title also has a unique series of exclusive "Dream Events" to add to the mix.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has not only a massive line-up of real-life Olympic events, but SEGA can today proudly confirm that their much anticipated title also has a unique series of exclusive "Dream Events" to add to the mix. The Dream Events - which are both single and multiplayer - are based in colourful game-like universes that include objects and power-ups that will either improve a players game, or bring their opponent down.

The four Dream events featured are:
Dream Race (Sandhill Race Course) - Get on your marks for this intense power-up filled race course, made for either one player, or as many as four.
Dream Platform (Tropical Reef Diving Area - 10,000M Diving) - More like skydiving, soar through hoops and perform aerial tricks while avoiding obstacles and opponents to reach the finish line first.
Dream Fencing (Duel Wharf Fencing Beach) - With unique special attacks for each character, this jungle-inspired world offers the ultimate duel.
Dream Table Tennis (Speed Rally Table Tennis Stadium) - A sci-fi wonderland, this magical table tennis extravaganza offers a special ability for each character - so move fast!

Mario & Sonic At the Olympic Games also offers Wii users the ultimate gaming fantasy - the opportunity to play against their favourite Mario or Sonic character. Thanks to the unique interactive Mii features, players can bring their own Mii into the game as a playable character and compete as themselves in any of the Olympic or Dream events.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games will be in-stores across Europe on November 23, 2007 for Wii, and Q1 2008 for the Nintendo DS.

<![CDATA[Mario & Sonic At The Olympics Looks Bronze-Worthy]]> German gaming site Gaming Universe has first in-game shots of the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario crossover game from Sega and Nintendo Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games and they look... about on par with what you'd expect from a thrice licensed game on the Wii and Nintendo DS. What we're saying is, if you've ever wanted to see a low polygon Sonic compete in archery or pit Dr. Robotnik against Princess Peach in a foot race, this is the game for you.

<![CDATA[Sega: PS3 Pricing Key To Sony's Success]]> Masanao Maeda, corporate director for Sega, weighed in on the PLAYSTATION 3 sales situation, telling Reuters that "superior marketing and pricing strategy will be the key for Sony." In other words, Maeda probably feels that a price cut this year will help tepid PS3 sales. I don't want to be a Negative Nelly here, but when Sega is giving you advice on how to run your console business, you might want to start worrying.

Maeda also believes that his company's venture with Nintendo on Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games has the potential to be a number one hit and sell several million units. Given that Sonic the Hedgehog's popularity is at an all-time high and Olympic-themed games generally sell in the 5 million range minimum (note: figure completely fabricated) I'd say that Maeda is spot on with both predictions.

<![CDATA[Good News About Mario & Sonic? Not Just Miyamoto...]]>

Shigeru Miyamoto? Busy dude. Yet, the legendary game creator is going to work on Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Along with Miyamoto, the game is being created by Sega's sports team instead of Team Sonic — Who have been responsible for the spate of recent, AWFUL Sonic games. But how much will Miyamoto contribute? Nintendo's Perrin Kaplan explains:

I have to say that while, yes, Miyamoto does touch a lot of the products, it varies in terms of how much time he spends. The fact that we're very publicly stating his involvement means that he will have more involvement than sort of the average game. It's definitely something he will spend time with.

The real news here, folks is that Team Sonic is not involved. Miyamoto or not, this game actually has a chance of not sucking.

<![CDATA[Sega: Pigs Have Flown, Hell Has Frozen Over]]> olympics.JPG

Well, really that's the PR people saying that, but it still cracks me up.

We posted it earlier today after hearing about the website, but now it's truly official: Sega and Nintendo have joined forces for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.

In the game players will compete in various events that take place at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games using a cast from both the Mario and Sonic worlds.

Confirmed characters are Mario, Sonic, Luigi, Knuckles, Yoshi and Tails, though I'm sure more will be in the game as well. And yes, there will be a 100m sprint that pits Mario against Sonic. Other sports mentioned in the release are table tennis and swimming.

"We are thrilled to partner with Nintendo and ISM on this groundbreaking title," said Hisao Oguchi, President and Chief Operating Officer, SEGA Corporation. "For the first time, two of the world's greatest games' characters come together to compete in the world's greatest sporting event and we couldn't be more excited."

"Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games," says Shigeru Miyamoto, Senior Managing Director and General Manager, Entertainment Analysis and Development Division, Nintendo Co., Ltd.. "In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?"

"The Olympic Games represent the true spirit of competition and passion," said Raymond Goldsmith, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ISM. "Bringing together intensely competitive and fun characters like Mario and Sonic in an Olympic setting helps showcase the sports of the Olympic Games in a new and compelling way for all generations."

I think the question on everyone's mind now is does this mean that Sonic will be in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

TOKYO (March 28, 2007) - SEGA Corporation and Nintendo Co. Ltd. today made a historical announcement that two of the biggest icons in the entertainment industry, Mario and Sonic , are joining forces to star in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Developed for the Wii video game system and the Nintendo DS system, this momentous agreement marks the first time these two renowned stars have appeared together in a game.

Published by SEGA across Europe and North America, and published by Nintendo in the Japanese market, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games will be available for Holiday 2007 and is licensed through a worldwide partnership with International Sports Multimedia (ISM), the exclusive interactive entertainment software licensee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, players will compete in events that take place in environments based on the official venues of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Using a supporting cast of characters from the amazing worlds of both Mario and Sonic, gamers will be able to compete as or against a range of lovable personalities including Mario, Sonic, Luigi , Knuckles , Yoshi , Tails and more. Innovative usage of the Wii and DS control systems to maneuver a favorite character will allow players to race the likes of Mario and Sonic down the 100m track, engage in exhilarating rallies in table tennis and churn water in a swimming heat, all while competing for the much sought after gold medal.

<![CDATA[Mario and Sonic To Appear in Game Together]]> teaser_final.jpg

I've been hearing rumblings that some big Nintendo news was coming down the pipeline. I suspect this is it, or at least part of it.

Earlier today Sega pushed live a site for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Two of my favorite game characters in one of my least favorite genres. Huzzah!!

The game, which will feature the Beijing Olympics and is due to hit shelves by the end of the year, will be exclusive to the Wii and DS. Expect more official details later today.
