Mario & Sonic Sells Five Million

Looks like Sega's Masanao Maeda underestimated the power of Sonic and Mario in the same game. Back at TGS last year he claimed that Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games would sell four million copies, matching the sales of the original Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis. Expectation met, and neatly surpassed. In three months the title has sold over five million copies worldwide as gamers flocked to the store in droves to witness what sort of train wreck occurs when you let Sega screw around with both their own characters and Nintendo's, while parents bought up copies because it was the most kid friendly game they could find without Billy Ray Cyrus's daughter on the front cover. Since they mention both in the press release, I am assuming this covers both the DS and Wii versions of the game, but they're equally mediocre so I'll allow it. Congratulations Sega for proving once again that a game can sell based on characters alone. More »

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games DS

I was absolutely not on board the good ship Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games when it set sail, and this despite having witnessed, sorta, McWhertor school a demo guy in the game while playing as Princess Peach. But the DS version, that looks like it might be worth checking out.

Week in Games: Silent Hill Origins Edition

The flood of amazing game titles seems to have ebbed a bit this week which my beleaguered bank account is most thankful for. Silent Hill: Origins will be my purchase this week as I try to plow through the last two week's worth of purchases. Anything on the list catch your eye?

Silent Hill: Origins (PSP)
Take a prequel visit to creepy Silent Hill and see how it got so creepy.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (X360, PC, PS3, DS)
World War II is finally over.

Empire Earth III (PC)
take your empire from humble beginnings to outer space.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (WII)
A dubious pairing. But who will win?

Gears of War (PC)
Marcus Fenix and his scarred legions arrive on the PC.

The Simpsons Game (PSP)
D'oh! Just a week behind.

Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War (X360, PS3)
Think Dynasty Warriors in medieval Europe.

Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga (WII, X360, PS3, DS)
Relive Star Wars through the blocky world of Legos.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (WII)
Charge of the Dawn Brigade.

F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate (PC)
I fear another expansion is in the works.

F.E.A.R. Files (X360)
Both F.E.A.R expansion packs in one fancy package

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance (PC)
If the original wasn't enough for you.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker (DS)
Hunt for monsters and make them do your bidding.

Bee Movie Game (WII)
Ok, let's be honest. Does anyone really care?

Mario & Sonic Sprint To Early Release Date

We posted earlier today of a handful of new events that had been added to Sega's Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games, but missed out on some North American specific details. Good news for those looking for an answer to the burning questions "Who's faster, Mario or Sonic?" and "Who's a better fencer, Luigi or Tails?" as Sega has bumped up the release date to November 6 for the American release. After being jostled around, from November 13 to November 20, it seems they've settled on the sixth, also noting the Wii game's new "gold" status.

If you missed out on my hands-on impressions while wearing a casual v-neck t-shirt, don't pass them up again. And turn up those speakers for maximum Princess Peach punishment!

Sonic, Mario, Dreams and Mii

If you thought that a fat Italian plumber outrunning Sonic the Hedgehog was pretty implausible, imagine my lazy ass doing it. Sega has announced Mii integration in the upcoming Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, allowing you to use your Mii to compete against gaming legends, finally allowing me to live out my fantasy of stabbing Wario in the face with an epee, though the lack of a full-contact co-ed wrestling event leaves another unfulfilled.

Along with the Mii integration, Sega has also confirmed four Dream events to be included in the game on top of the extensive lineup of real Olympic events. These take place in colorful, game-inspired stages laced with power-ups and special moves, appeasing the Mario and Sonic purists out there. There's a Dream Race on the Sandhill Race Course, Dream Platform Diving which sounds a bit like Pilot Wings skydiving, Dream Fencing on jungle beach, and Dream Table Tennis in a 'sci-fi wonderland'. Hit the jump for more details while I go tweak my Mii in preparation.

Mario & Sonic At The Olympics Looks Bronze-Worthy

German gaming site Gaming Universe has first in-game shots of the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario crossover game from Sega and Nintendo Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games and they look... about on par with what you'd expect from a thrice licensed game on the Wii and Nintendo DS. What we're saying is, if you've ever wanted to see a low polygon Sonic compete in archery or pit Dr. Robotnik against Princess Peach in a foot race, this is the game for you. More »

Sega: PS3 Pricing Key To Sony's Success

Masanao Maeda, corporate director for Sega, weighed in on the PLAYSTATION 3 sales situation, telling Reuters that "superior marketing and pricing strategy will be the key for Sony." In other words, Maeda probably feels that a price cut this year will help tepid PS3 sales. I don't want to be a Negative Nelly here, but when Sega is giving you advice on how to run your console business, you might want to start worrying. More »

Good News About Mario & Sonic? Not Just Miyamoto...

Shigeru Miyamoto? Busy dude. Yet, the legendary game creator is going to work on Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Along with Miyamoto, the game is being created by Sega's sports team instead of Team Sonic — Who have been responsible for the spate of recent, AWFUL Sonic games. But how much will Miyamoto contribute? Nintendo's Perrin Kaplan explains: More »
