<![CDATA["People Don't Want Philosophical Marcus Fenix"]]> Uncharted has been described as "the best game ever made about a dude in a t-shirt." That's a pretty fair description! Josh Scherr, lead cinematics animator for developer Naughty Dog, says the goal was to make Nathan Drake and regular dude, but one who was fully fleshed out and believable. Scherr says this about characterization in video games, mentioning Epic's Gears of War:

Narrative-based videogames have a wish fulfillment aspect to them, and gamers expect their protagonist to match the setting and game play. People don't buy Gears of War so they can hear Marcus Fenix wax philosophical on the nature of the soul, crying softly every time he curb-stomps an enemy.

I sure as shit did! And boy, was I ever disappointed.

<![CDATA[Bender Excited About Gears Of War 2 (Now With Added Brumak)]]> John DiMaggio is the voice of Bender. He's also the voice of Marcus Fenix, which is the more likely reason IGN were interviewing him, hoping no doubt that - as is becoming common these says - as a voice actor he'd spill the kind of games-related beans a developer wouldn't dare. DiMaggio didn't disappoint. He reveals that, like the PC version of the original, players will face off against a Brumak in Gears 2. He also says Franklin will be returning, then goes and loses himself with excitement:

Oh man, dude - there's new weapons, new beasts, there's a couple of new characters, and it's just badass.
Yes, that's wonderful, but is there story this time, John?

There just might be.

It looks cool as s—-. The storylines are really cool and the relationships of the guys in the game - the sequences that explain things that are going on - they're a lot deeper.
Excellent!

<![CDATA[Mark Rein Weighs In On The Gears Munny Situation]]>

Our own Luke Plunkett brought us the pics of this awesome custom painted Marcus Fenix Munny doll created by Emilio Lopez for his cousin. Later, we get word that Emilio had received a cease and desist letter from Epic Games citing various copyright infringements.

Hearing of Emilio's plight, the guys over at Gamespy's Planet Gears of War site immediately sent off an email to Epic Games' Mark Rein about the situation. Rein sent back a reply with the a bit about what happened and an apology to Emilio.

Ugh. Our lawyers are trying to do their job and protect our trademarks but I guess they didn't realize this wasn't a commercial project and they fired off a standard form letter. It is unfortunate when this happens but the problem with trademarks is you HAVE to protect them and Emilio's work looks so amazingly professional, right down to a cool package!, that they probably failed to notice this was a one-off gift for non-commercial use. What we need to do is come up with some sort of permission letter for things like these so that we're properly protecting our future commercial rights but not stopping people from doing cool fan art like this.

On behalf of Epic I apologize to Emilio and anyone who was offended by this.

Pretty damn classy if you ask me.

<![CDATA[Halo 2 vs Gears of War: The Dustiest of Trails]]>

Now that Gears of War has knocked Halo 2 out of the Number 1 spot on Xbox Live, there's bound to be some hard feelings. In their latest web comic titled "The Dustiest of Trails", the boys over at RPG-TV pit Master Chief against Marcus Fenix in a touching passing of the torch.

Poor Master Chief, it can't feel good to be left behind like a cheap hooker for a new slab of burly man-meat. Marcus Fenix, I wish I knew how to quit you.
