It was designed by our very own Adam, who proves his worth in new ways every day. The logo is just one of the preparations being made for next Sunday, when McWhertor and I make the trek overseas to cover the massive game festival. The folks over in Germany are busy preparing as well, if these images of the early booth assembly are any indications. They've got pics up for Sony, EA, and Toshiba at their official site, and as you can see...well I am sure they'll look better once the lights are turned on.

<![CDATA[Xbox Live Gets A Whole New Cross-Section]]> logocmt.jpgXbox Live is getting more content to LIVE Marketplace, but this time they are broadening their range passed the usual categorical "gamer" programming which so far has mostly consisted of potty humor programming and B-rated movies. Although I enjoy both immensely, it's nice to see Microsoft going beyond the stereotype because, after all, they aren't a cable company and therefore don't need to keep such tight restraints on the kind of content they offer.

On June 11th (and just in time for Pride), XBL will be the first gaming console to offer programs from Logo, the network for the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender audience. Interestingly enough, earlier in the month, on June 6th, XBLwill offer shows from CMT (Country Music Television). This is fantastic for gay cowboy gamers, which I am sure exist, and probably have a forum somewhere. There are forums for everything these days.

Broad range of New Content Coming on Xbox LIVE Marketplace, the Television and Movie Download Service with Something for Everyone

Xbox 360 becomes the first gaming console to offer content from Logo, MTV Networks' channel for the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender audience; top anime distributors and CMT, the nation's #1 country music network

With 7,000 pieces of gaming and entertainment content and counting, Xbox LIVE Marketplace continues to grow as the only online service that offers high definition movies and TV shows for download. This June, the catalogue of content gets even better. With more than 15 entertainment partners, Xbox LIVE offers U.S. members at any age or gender a diverse array of great programming at the click of a button.

After having huge success on Xbox LIVE Marketplace with content from MTV, Comedy Central and VH1, this month MTV Networks is bringing two more properties to the service:

Country Music Television. On June 6, country music fans on Xbox LIVE will enjoy a great lineup of TV shows from CMT, the #1 country music network in the nation. Fans can download the first seasons of hit shows such as, "Comedy Stage," "Foxworthy's Big Night Out" and "Prankville" starting tomorrow, with more series and episodes rolling out this summer.
Logo. On June 11, Xbox 360 will become the first gaming console to offer content from Logo, the network for the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender audience from MTV Networks. Xbox LIVE will offer a bevy of popular Logo shows, from comedies "Wisecrack," and "The Big Gay Sketch Show," to scripted dramas like "Noah's Arc," and other programs including, "Curl Girls" and "Real Momentum Documentaries."

Beginning June 12, two of the biggest anime distributors in the US will join current Xbox LIVE partner ADV Films with popular shows, movies, gamer pics and themes, making LIVE Marketplace an unparalleled online source for quality anime content:

FUNimation. The epic adventure series "Samurai 7," adapted from Akira Kurosawa's legendry film "Seven Samurai," is coming to Xbox LIVE Marketplace. Also coming from FUNimation: "Trinity Blood," "Gunslinger Girl," and "Basilisk."
Geneon Entertainment. Die-hard fans and those new to the genre alike will enjoy the U.S. HD debut of the anime classic "Akira," available exclusively from Geneon on Xbox LIVE Marketplace. Also available from Geneon Entertainment at launch: "Gun Sword," "Last Exile," "Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo" and "Lupin the 3rd."

June will also bring award-winning films and blockbuster hits to Xbox LIVE Marketplace, starting with 'Team America World Police,' which launched in HD on the service on June 1st. Other top new films coming this month include:

Dreamgirls
Letters from Iwo Jima
Shooter
Black Snake Moan
Pan's Labyrinth

<![CDATA[E3 Needs to Change, But How?]]>

The weekend's rumblings about the possible cancellation or total overhaul of E3 left me feeling very conflicted.

I've been saying for two years now that E3 needs to change. There's just too much going on in too short a period of time for anything but a small percentage of what's shown to rise to the top.

Fan magazines are typically the only ones that can cover the show properly and even they miss out on chunks of it. Smaller sites, including ones like Kotaku, cover maybe half of what's around, if they're lucky.

Mainstream press covers next to nothing.

For instance, for this year's E3 I wrote two daily stories for the Rocky Mountain News, one covering Sony's announcement and another covering Msoft's and Nintendo's. In retrospect, I should have written a daily about Doug Lowenstein's state of the industry as well.

Afterward, I did a largish package for the Rocky Mountain News, which included a set of stories about the top games, some of the controversy of the show and a bit of the color. I also did a big analysis of how the big three did.

But what about Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Namco, or the hundreds of other publishers? They all had news, they all showed good games? Well, newspapers only have so much space and they just didn't make the cut.

So, on the one hand I applaud the ESA's decision, if this is all true, to do something about E3. Most of the people who actually show up to work the show, can't do their jobs because there's just too much to cover.

But then I started reading the rumors of what might happen. Things like E3 becoming one of many events that will take place over the year to promote games or maybe just developers doing their own things.

That's even worse than the current state of affairs. Sure game mags won't have a problem covering these events. First, they'll likely all be in California and second I believe a lot of magazines allow their writers to have trips to such events paid for by the developers.

But newspapers and mainstream magazines will be left out in the cold if this goes through. I know my newspaper, and most newspapers are like this, will never pay for multiple trips to cover the industry. And the Rocky's ethics policy, and again this is the same with most newspapers, won't allow free trips.

The last thing this industry needs right now is a move that will isolate it from mainstream coverage.

My hopes are that if there is a move away from the current E3 state of affairs it will be one to something more akin to a film festival, where the games displayed will have to go through some sort of vetting process to make the list. The end result I hope for is an event that would showcase the best of what gaming will be offering in a venue that is meant to be seen by those who need to see it, not want to.

I have a call into the ESA, hopefully they'll get back to me today.

<![CDATA[Apple Logo Pops Up on PS3 Site]]>

It looks like someone's finally gotten around to updating the U.S. site for the Playstation 3, too bad it was with a logo for Apple. If you go to the site and watch the image of the Playstation 3 when it loads you'll see the Apple logo appear for about half a second right on top of the console.

I suppose this could be some sort of hacking, editing screw-up or internal jokery, but I think there's just as good a chance that it's about some sort of possible tie-in between Sony's PS3 and Apple's... who knows what.

I have a call into Sony trying to get to the bottom of it.

Update: Sony says it was all a big mistake.

<![CDATA[Revolution Logo Revealed]]> revlogo.jpg

Maybe it was a mistake, maybe it's not the real thing, but Blitz Games has a logo up on their coroporate site for the Nintendo Revolution.

I can't imagine that Blitz Games would just slap that up there without checking first, so one would think it's the real deal.

I'll see if I can get anything more than a "we don't comment on rumors" out of Nintendo.
