Aww man... I've been singing the "Swing your arms from side to side" song loads this past year... It's really sad to see the guy gone...
I'd feel insincere if I said he held any huge place in my childhood, but of all the celebrities to die this year, Captain Lou is the first one to warrant a memorial drink for me.
Anyone care to join me as I raise my glass and do the mario?
He used to own a fireworks store near me when I was a kid. I was in there once with my dad and he was in his Captain Lou outfit, and came up to me and said "Hey kid! Want an American flag!?" I had no idea who he was, and he terrified me.
If only I had known he was Mario from TV at the time...
I remember when I was five years old, they had a VHS tape of an episode of the show at the local video shop, "The Great Bike Race", and I thought it was just about the best God damn thing on the planet. We watched it many times. I actually think I liked the segments before and after better than the cartoon itself.
I remember one scene pretty vividly: As Mario peeled what was supposed to be one of many old pizzas laying around their apartment off of a ringing telephone, he said "I don't remember ordering a pizza with green mold..."
That was a line that always made me laugh, no matter how many times I saw it.
Aw man, I loved that guy, and that show. The sound effects were always great. And I think on the very first show, he got away with cussing at Luigi on the air.
@buttersstotch: Hey now, if I interpreted it as 'Fuck you, Luigi', which many others have, then god damnit, that's what the man said! I'd tell people that too if they tried to remove spaghetti from my pimp overalls.
Mario has been voiced by a number of people over the years, even by Optimus Prime at one point, but... Lou was always my favorite... I don't know why, maybe it's because I saw it during a very impressionable age, but it always struck as the best, most authentic voice for Mario. I remember when they brought in Charles Martinet, I had a hard time accepting him the longest time. I'm used to him now, but... In my mind and heart, when I think of Mario and Luigi saying something, it'll always be in the manner Lou and Danny Wells did them.
Terrible to hear this, because I actually know the man. I went to Florida for my ex girlfriend's brother's wedding back in 2003. Turns out that his fiance's uncle was..Captain Lou. The day before the wedding we were all hanging out at the fiance's father's house after the wedding rehersal and I actually got to meet him and get his autograph. He was in pretty bad shape then, walking with a cane and was very thin. I believe he was living in Georgia at the time. Well, anyways, I had talked to him about how I grew up watching him in the WWF and as Super Mario on the TV show. He had told me that the SMSS was going to be going into re-runs and that he had provided some voicework for a DVD set that was coming out (not sure if it ever did). Well, me and the girl are no more but I still have his autograph on a piece of white construction paper that I found laying on a nearby counter.
RIP Captain. Glad I got to meet you and talk to you, even if it was only for a little while.
I grew up watching him not only as Mario but just plain'ol Captain Lou in the WWF. I even use a brief clip from a 'Super Mario Melody' that ends with "Do the Mario" whenever I get an email.
He lead a good life and seemed proud of what he accomplished. That's all anyone can ask for at the end of the day.
To everyone who wishes to show their condolences: wait a day or two and search for Mr. Albano's obituary notice. Lots of times people, especially celebrities, request that those who wish to show their support contribute to a specific charity in lieu of flowers or other such gifts.

Also, he should have been Mario in the film. No disrespect to Bob Hoskins, but Lou = Mario. Accept no substitutes.
