Dare I write this in public: I played too much.

Below you will find my 2009 playing history in grisly detail. This is the fourth list I've made of this type, one each for the years from 2006 until now (all linked to at the bottom of this post). I list all of the video games that I played outside of trade shows, press demos and the office. In theory, these are the games I played for fun, or at least not solely for work.

As I've done in previous years, I've divided the list by platforms, listing every 2009 game I started playing and bolding any game, from 2009 or earlier, that I finished. By "finished" I mean I got to the end of the game's single-player campaign. I know that's not the best measurement for completion. For example, I've played a whole lot less of Modern Warfare 2 than those who have ranked up through the game's multiplayer modes, but my measure of completion suits me, a primarily single-player gamer. (Yes, yes, I used to run a blog called Multiplayer. What of it?)

I believe that playing all these games improves my understanding of the video game medium. I try to finish games I really like, because I'd like to think that a great game is one that's made to be wonderful from beginning to end, as is the case with a great movie or novel. Unfortunately, that's not always the case, as some very good games get pretty bad in their latter halves. So, yes, I regret finishing some of these games and want some hours of my life back.

If you're wondering how I made time for this. Credit gaming as being my main hobby and, more importantly, credit the patience of my wife. You'll see I skipped most of the racing, sports and Japanese role-playing games of 2009. That helped, too.

One other note: I didn't pay for every game on this list. Many were sent to me by publishers, others obtained by trading in games, all with the intent to play lots of games, try lots of things and be more knowledgeable about my reporting beat because of it.

Oh, and I will include some notes here and there on this list to explain some stuff.

The gallery of 20 discs starts with Grand Theft Auto III's disc and wraps up by naming PaRappa the Rapper's disc as the best bit of on-disc gaming art.

The list certainly missed quite a few stunners, but it's a great jumping off point for empty debate. So let's hear it and, more importantly, see it. What's your favorite bit of gaming art?

<![CDATA[A Year in Review: The Top Features and Reporting Of 2008]]> It's been a pretty amazing year for the game's industry. We've seen record sales, major layoffs, the disbarment of Jack Thompson and not a few smaller stories to mull over as well.

I combed through the year's worth of features and original stories that ran on our site this year to find the most read among them. That isn't to say these are our best efforts, but they're certainly our most popular. They also offer interesting insight into what you, the readers, find most interesting.

The top ten features of 2008 includes an ecclectic mix of topics which touch on everything from the sorts of desks developers keep, to dissecting and disproving the Madden curse, to a highbrow discussion of objectivism in BioShock with Ken Levine and the president of the Ayn Rand Institute.

<![CDATA[So What Games Support PS3 Trophies?]]> Trophy support on the PlayStation 3 has been live for awhile now, but good number of us have yet to actually unlock any ego-boosting status symbols on our shiny Sony systems. Our own lack of trophies along with news that major games like Fallout 3 would be shipping with no support for the feature led us to wonder about the current overall status of trophies on the PS3. We gathered up our consoles, kissed our loved ones goodbye, stocked up on canned food and got ready to compile the greatest trophy support list ever created. Then our intern, Jim Reilly, pointed us to TheSixthAxis, where they've already done that.

We love Jim.

TheSixthAxis maintains a list of games and the status of trophy support of said games, from the seven that can currently net you silver, gold, and gold-pressed latinum prizes to the titles that won't be supporting them at all. There's the odd mistake here and there, like listing Fallout 3 as supporting trophies via patch (not confirmed), but all in all it gives you a fairly good idea of where the trophy feature stands - expectantly looking out the window for new games.

<![CDATA[E3 Megalist Round-Up]]> It was a fun three days. We got a chance to catch up with Shigeru Miyamoto, Jack Tretton and Peter Moore, eyeballed the Gears of War movie script, wore blue footies around Santa Monica, were treated like meat by Jade and rode a bull. We also managed to squeeze in time to play oodles of games and write up our various impressions, party with Queens of the Stone Age and catch ten press conferences.

And don't even get me started on all of the walks. Traversing Santa Monica, repeatedly, over the course of three days while running late for a meeting isn't exactly fun... me? I cheated and took a cab, but don't tell the rest of Kotaku.

The one thing we didn't do, or at least didn't do much of, was eat and sleep. Personally, I managed to squeeze in seven hours of sleep and one-and-a-half meals over the first two days. I was so exhausted by the end of day three that I skipped the day's only meal for a solid seven hours of sleep. And I believe that was about average.

Don't get me wrong. We love video games, so for us this was like something between nirvana and the seventh circle. Hit the jump for the really long list of our E3 coverage, most of it anyway—and thanks for keeping us company during the journey.

<![CDATA[SEGA's E3 Line-up]]> sonicmario.jpg Jumping on the E3-game-list bandwagon, SEGA of America unveiled their list of games they will be showing this week at the not-as-big show. All told SEGA is showing off an unlucky 13 titles including Bleach for the Wii, Space Siege for the PC and hot plumber-on-rodent racer: Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.

"SEGA's mission is to publish fun and entertaining games for people wherever and whenever they want to play," said Simon Jeffery, President and COO, SEGA of America. "For some titles like The Golden Compass we'll provide a compelling and similar game experience across all the major systems, and for other games like Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games or NiGHTS we create specific gameplay unique to the capabilities of a platform like the Wii or DS. And with Universe at War we are leading the pack as the first third-party publisher to announce a game that takes advantage of cross platform play between an Xbox 360 and Windows. We are proud to show the world all of these games and more this week at E3."

<![CDATA[Top 10 MMOs]]> B000067FDW.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpgIn news outside of the console industry, the top ten most popular MMO games have been listed. Not surprisingly, World of Warcraft is sitting pretty at number one, but the rest of the list is a bit of a head scratcher. Habbo Hotel, that Finnish playable MySpace to the youth, comes in second, which begs the question,"How old do you have to be to own a credit card these days?!":

1. World of Warcraft, released 2004 - 8.5 million subscribers.

2. Habbo Hotel, released 2000 - 7.5 million active users.

3. RuneScape, released 2001 - 5 million active users.

4. Club Penguin, released 2006 - 4 million active users.

5. Webkinz, released 2005 - 3.8 million active users.

6. Gaia Online, released 2003 - 2 million active users.

7. Guild Wars, released 2005 - 2 million active users.

8. Puzzle Pirates, released 2003 - 1.5 million active users.

9. Lineage I/II, released 1998 - 1 million subscribers.

10. Second Life, released 2003 - 500,000 active users.

Both Habbo Hotel and Webkinz are for kids. When I say kids, I mean the kind that enjoy eating Ling Ling potstickers from Costco while watching Kim Possible and Gilmore Girls (yes, we're all sad it's been cancelled). I'm all for kids playing video games, but I do think it's weird that they pay to be exposed to everyone in the world. Maybe my maternal instincts are starting to kick in, but it's probably more likely that I've been watching too much "To Catch a Predator".

<![CDATA[Top 20 Free Adventure Games]]>

GameSetWatch stumbled upon this fun list of freeware adventure games for last year.

Number one is an adventure about delivering a pizza, but some of the best adventure games started out with just as innocuous challenges.

Here's the top three:

Duty and Beyond: Your 'quest' in Duty and Beyond is simply to deliver a pizza. But who knew that the adventure would take you on an epic journey across several exotic locations in search of the mysterious customer. Simply a winner in the content category, with multiple endings to achieve depending on your final score. Fans of classic LucasArts games (especially Maniac Mansion) will love this one to bits.

Reactor 09/Cedric and the Revolution: With that out of the way, Reactor 09 is simply a fine piece of work by Bernie. Featuring multiple endings and gorgeous art with hues resembling those found in Beneath a Steel Sky, this game demonstrates what the AGS engine is capable of in the hands of a professional.

A bit less controversial is Cedric and the Revolution, in which you play the role of the titular character on a quest to gather enough people for a demonstration. Both are definitely adventure games worth having in your collection.

Spooks: Spooks is an excellent AGS adventure game by Erin Robinson, where most of the sprites and backgrounds were drawn using MSPaint and nine shades of gray. The story begins as Mortia finds herself in possession of a goldfish on a day out at the carnival. The prize she won from a game of darts is the catalyst of her adventure to seek the meaning of life.

The writing stands out and most of the music employed doesn't disappoint, although puzzles can be slightly perplexing at times. A small drawback to an otherwise amazing achievement, considering that it's a first effort and a sign of things to come.
