I love Demon's Souls. I am obsessed with it. It kind of reminds me of the original Ninja Gaiden in that no matter how many times you go through a level flawlessly (after painstakingly learning it), there will always come a time where you will get impatient and your timing will be off by a touch and you will die mercilessly at the same spot 5 times in a row.
The game sets up a challenging playground and doles out the tools necessary to navigate it at its own, brilliant pace. The game teaches you how to play it, you just have to listen well. If you don't pay attention and adapt, you will quickly become so frustrated with your failures that there is no point in playing.
As you level up, the choices you make with your weapons and stats make for a very organic-feeling character creation. You adapt your character to your preferred play style while adapting your play style to the environment and the tools at hand.
The controls are tight and free. They really attain a balance of the freedom of action titles (though without the combos of, say God of War or Devil May Cry) and the rules of RPG combat. They are easy to learn and hard to master, but unlike as is the case in many games to which that adage applies, mastering the controls is more of a means to an end than the end itself.
The story is more evident than explained; there are very few cut scenes and your character has no dialog. The NPC voice actors are superb.
Like all epic RPGs, there are a lot of intricacies available for pursuit and exploitation; this is a meaty, meaty game that relies on high intensity combat, a very rare combination. It's one-of-a-kind, and it's really hit my spot.
I thought Dragon Age was supposed to have online coop? Glad I didn't buy it. Co-op was the only reason I was even interested in the game. #kotakureviewroundup
@Jack Phrahzt: I'm not really sure where I got the idea that it would have coop, but I was somehow convinced that it did and was seriously considering getting it to play with my friends. Pity. That's atleast 3 sells lost because it's not coop. #kotakureviewroundup
@TexasJack: Uhh, I'm sorry, but have you ever played Baldur's Gate (which is mentioned as the basis multiple times) or any other BioWare RPG? How would that even WORK in co-op? Why would that be a "won't buy without" feature? Are we talking about the same game? The game deserves a much closer look than "no co-op no moneys!" #kotakureviewroundup
@sheepofdoom: No, I've never played Baldur's Gate and I have no intention to either. Not that it matters, I have obviously not been keeping up with Dragon Age very closely or I never would have been under the impression that it had online coop. Dur.
I have played BioWare RPGs, Mass Effect and KOTOR. I don't how it would work, but I'm not a developer and therefore it is not my job to figure out such.
And no, I am simply not interested in the game. The only reason I was interested at all was because I thought it was a multiplayer RPG. Which I was interested in trying it out with my friends. However since it is not, there are plenty other games for me to play and enjoy that are either out or coming out in short order, like Modern Warfare 2. #kotakureviewroundup
Here's my question, does anybody hold off buying a game until a particular source reviews it? I would think those who want to buy it already have, and those who haven't won't.
To those clamoring for the Demon's Souls review, are you hinging your purchase on this upcomming review, or have you already bought the game and waiting to see if your opinions of the game are echoed/validated by the review?
@AncientUnknown1: A lot of people like to make sure that games don't have any serious glaring flaws before they buy unproven titles.
I generally don't really need reviews, as I can get a pretty good idea of a game's quality simply by the all the previews and various announced features. #kotakureviewroundup
@AncientUnknown1: I don't need reviews most of the time, but there are a few games that i may need more than just reviews to make my mind on them.
Dragon age origins and Darksiders are perfect example of those games that i need more than just reviews and word of mouth in order for me to make a choice on them ^_^ #kotakureviewroundup
@AncientUnknown1: I never wait for one source to review a game. If 10 other sites have given a game a great score, of course I'm going to buy it. If there is a game that I'm on the edge about, but then a source that I like a lot (i.e. Kotaku) speaks highly of it, I would probably consider getting it sooner. I'm not really into buying games "blind", but I don't wait for a particular source to review something either. It's nice, but not necessary, for the purchase of a game to me. #kotakureviewroundup
Tip to Kotaku, if you need exp, head to Storm King area and use the sword you get there to build up the souls. You can also leave your soul sign in the passage between Storm King and Old Hero to help other people with the boss. If you're lucky, you may also be summoned to a Hard Mode boss fight by an advanced player and rack in the souls from kills if you can manage to keep yourself alive. You do need that sword however for an easier time.
Also the destroyed hut can be a site of protection from the enemies if you charge right into that house and avoid being in plain sight. If you have the sword you can lock on and kill the flying mantas from in there while being protected. Also you can avoid the barrage from Storm King when he swoops down as well. #kotakureviewroundup
@Griefy: As an all-melee character, I found world 2 much harder than world 4... until I just grinded the souls I needed to get 10 mag/10 int and Soul Arrow. #kotakureviewroundup
@Koztah: Yeah, I played Royal so Soul Arrow just made almost the entire game a breeze. If I had to, I would lead an enemy to an open area where I could run around sound and cast spells at it. Good thing enemies as well can not go past scenery. I'm more of a Warrior Type though but after you get Fire Storm... well shit just dies fast. 2 hit kill on first Prison Boss. #kotakureviewroundup
in my opinion kotaku reviews are the most unbiased spot on reviews. They nail most everything correctly, and take their time and put some real thought into the reviews. Thanks guys your reviews are the shit in my book :) #kotakureviewroundup
I'm still waiting for Borderlands to ship from futureshop... Seriously. I preordered it a week before it came out. Where the hell is it :( #kotakureviewroundup
@Jordan: I've had really bad experience with Future Shop online pre-orders. On more than a few occasions I've pre-ordered from their site over a month in advance, only to be told on ship day that they are "Out of Stock" and I'll have to wait. #kotakureviewroundup
@Jordan: I'm always leery of online stores, though it's mostly cause I fear mail people having sticky fingers than the stores not delivering it in time.
I Pre-ordered mines through Gamestop and thankfully managed to get it the day after it came out. Though I've had some bad experiences when ordering elsewhere so hope all goes well, go Borderlands on futureshops if need be. #kotakureviewroundup
I'm a bit surprised he use the review format. Telling us what he "Loved" and "Hated" about his life before summarizing it was a bit much.
Overall, any life that ends on a positive note gets a 10 from me.
That's the first 10 I've given out ever! and that's with the knowledge that my girlfriend ask me to rate her looks from 1-10. I kid, I only kid. #kotakureviewroundup
Still waiting on Kotaku to review Demon's Souls. What's taking you guys so long? Do you need some strategy tips to finish the game? We are here if you need us. #kotakureviewroundup
@LokeSTL: While it would be nice to see a Kotaku editor's take on Demon's Souls, it wouldn't serve the purpose of a review - to help people decide if it's worth buying.
The game is mostly sold out, and although some more copies are being shipped I'm fairly certain they won't be on shelves very long. #kotakureviewroundup
@Koztah: True, I just want to know what these guys think of the game. Kotaku feels more like a gaming community to me than a news feed site, so hearing their opinions as well as other gamers like yourself is like discussing a game with friends.
Plus, I dig the 'Liked' in blue and 'Hated' in red format. I also feel like Kotaku's reviews are less hype driven and more honest and to the point. Reviews by gamers who actually like to play games, if you know what I mean.
I think Atlus will keep making copies as long as they keep selling. If they quickly sell out of this next batch, add bet money on a third. They aren't ignorant, just overly cautious. #kotakureviewroundup
@(Starman) AnalysisDialysis: LOL! It's a sadistic bitch to me as well. I'm close to finishing my first playthrough, but I'm having some difficulty with a few areas. My other problems are that I'm a completionist, a loot horder(I have about 30 slave shields that are useless, but I refuse to toss), and do a lot of exploring and re-exploring. Maybe this weekend I will finally beat that bastard at the end of 1-4. #kotakureviewroundup
@Koztah: The purpose of a review is to help people decide if a game's worth buying? I hope not. I know people use them for that purpose, but I don't write mine as shopping guides. I want people to know if I think the game is any good and why or why not. #kotakureviewroundup
@Stephen Totilo: Of course you want people to know if you think a game is good or not - you wouldn't be writing if you didn't. But people generally want to know if a game is any good and why to decide if they should buy it. Otherwise, why would game journalists receive pre-release review copies? Indeed, why would the industry pay any attention whatsoever to game reviewers?
If reviewers' opinions weren't used as shopping advice, why would anyone care if this or that reviewer was paid off or gave consistently inflated scores? Why would people expect any sort of responsibility on the reviewer's part if it served as an opinion piece just for the sake of opinion?
Reviews are information, opinion and advice rolled into one and used to make a decision. That's always been the case no matter if we're talking about games, movies, books or toasters. #kotakureviewroundup
