For those looking for information, there's a great writeup on Kotaku that looks into the ideology behind the game here: [kotaku.com]
For my thoughts: the game is at its best when you know nothing about the levels and just about enough about the mechanics to cause certain things to happen. This means that there's enough juice to last you a good three playthroughs as black world tendency can still throw up some very nasty surprises.
Hopefully you've not been on any message boards; there are a lot of cheese strategies up now, and for the OCD min/maxer it's easy to burn yourself out creating new characters before you even get to see how tough NG+ is (and when you get there, you'll be so familiar with the mechanics that it won't actually seem all that impressive).
The world is very atmospheric, and the game is highly satisfying. The feeling of besting a part of a level or a boss that's been giving you trouble is great, and the gameplay itself, particularly the melee is very weighty, with you feeling every hit that connects.
The online component is a little love/hate depending on how into player versus player you are. If you pulled a face at that last sentence then it's definitely recommended that you stay offline or remain in soul form at all times; people can and will mess up your game.
It also sucks if you summon a person to help you and they know so much about the game that they absolutely breeze through the level for you, but that's not really something that can be remedied. For that, I would recommend playing offline first time through.
If you're even considering getting the game, odds are you should. I very much doubt you'd be disappointed.
Bloodlines was a big disappointment, as the bad controls and bad AI killed what could've been a potentially cool portable version of AC. At least I got some weapons and 19k florins to import into ACII for the trouble.
I don't remember Leon ever looking so emo. When I played RE2 on the PSX I wanted to be Leon, that Leon.
This Leon belongs in Twilight, I don't want to be him. Nor do I want to play his game in which I'm shooting everything in the environment for cash, that's just silly.
Oh! I need to read the review on those headsets, I was thinking about buying them. Had no idea there was a review. Thanks Totilo.
@Friedhamster: Totally agree with you there. Actually RE died for me after RE3. I mean where is the horror part in RE4 and RE5? Those two looked like another action game to me, not my beloved RE. Black wannabe zombies on motorcycles, what is this, circus? tt
@Friedhamster: You are right in a way. The guy in the pic IS emo, but isn't Leon. He's Steve Burnside, the most hated major character in any Resident Evil game. He is in Code Veronica, him and Claire Redfield want to get it on, but the zombies and stuff are being huge cock blockers.
@ColinStein: Are you saying the single player is over ten hours, or are you saying it's fantastic? I game sometimes on my PS3, so if I do play AC2 it will be on that console if I don't wait for the PC version.
The first AC really, really became an effort for me to continue. Very repetitive, and the combat was boring to say the least. My opinion of course, there are many games I love that I would be embarrassed to admit to here. Lol.
@homernoy: He, and I, are speaking on both accounts. This game is infinitely better than the first one, which I absolutely resented. Ubisoft has pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in gaming history with this one, believe me you should def look into playing some ACII before passing judgement based on the first game.
Also, reviewers keep saying they spend upwards to 20-25 hours completing everything the game has to offer, I can def believe that as I've been playing for hours and finally made my way into Venice last night, also making the first breakaway from Ezio and play as Desmond for a little.
@homernoy: Oh I know AC1 was awfully boring and repetitive. I was forgiving because it was the first in a series and it reminded me of PoP. However, AC2 is fucking sweet! I wouldn't recommend 1 to many people, in fact, I think I would tell them that it sucked. 2 is great! I really feel they fixed every problem! The dialog scenes are much more cinematic, none of that having the press the button at the right time bullshit or press any button and it changes the camera angle a little bit. Like all secondary missions in every game, there will be repeats but I feel there are more than the few AC1 had. There are also things to collect that actually do things! And the whole money system is great! I thought I wouldn't like it but I love it! New health system I thought I hated but I love. New ways to hide and have people help you fight guards. The fighting isn't slow as shit anymore and plenty more reasons! Like puzzles! Real puzzles! Not just Zelda crap but things you have to think about. Did you know you can pay hookers to distract guards? Well you can!
I know I'm still excited! You can tell I'm excited But I completely understand how you feel, I know how boring 1 was. I'm not trying to defend it too much but this next game is so much better. I know alot of people feel like AC2 will just be as boring as AC1 but They did almost everything right this time around. I really can't think of anything I don't like about this game. But I completely understand why you feel you shouldn't even bother.
@Stephen Totilo: I'm not really sure, I don't have a definitive style, it's usually that I see a game and I like it or I don't.
I wouldn't mind L4D2, but my laptop couldn't run TF2 competitively and sadly it doesn't look like PS3 will have it any time soon. And then I've never played Assassin's Creed 1 so the sequel was never something I kept tabs on..
Personally I'm wanting christmas to come early so I can get to playing Football Manager 2010 and possibly Ratchet and Clank if I have the money left over.
In retrospect, maybe a job wouldn't be a bad idea...
I love Demon's Souls. I am obsessed with it. It kind of reminds me of the original Ninja Gaiden in that no matter how many times you go through a level flawlessly (after painstakingly learning it), there will always come a time where you will get impatient and your timing will be off by a touch and you will die mercilessly at the same spot 5 times in a row.
The game sets up a challenging playground and doles out the tools necessary to navigate it at its own, brilliant pace. The game teaches you how to play it, you just have to listen well. If you don't pay attention and adapt, you will quickly become so frustrated with your failures that there is no point in playing.
As you level up, the choices you make with your weapons and stats make for a very organic-feeling character creation. You adapt your character to your preferred play style while adapting your play style to the environment and the tools at hand.
The controls are tight and free. They really attain a balance of the freedom of action titles (though without the combos of, say God of War or Devil May Cry) and the rules of RPG combat. They are easy to learn and hard to master, but unlike as is the case in many games to which that adage applies, mastering the controls is more of a means to an end than the end itself.
The story is more evident than explained; there are very few cut scenes and your character has no dialog. The NPC voice actors are superb.
Like all epic RPGs, there are a lot of intricacies available for pursuit and exploitation; this is a meaty, meaty game that relies on high intensity combat, a very rare combination. It's one-of-a-kind, and it's really hit my spot.
I thought Dragon Age was supposed to have online coop? Glad I didn't buy it. Co-op was the only reason I was even interested in the game. #kotakureviewroundup
@Jack Phrahzt: I'm not really sure where I got the idea that it would have coop, but I was somehow convinced that it did and was seriously considering getting it to play with my friends. Pity. That's atleast 3 sells lost because it's not coop. #kotakureviewroundup
@TexasJack: Uhh, I'm sorry, but have you ever played Baldur's Gate (which is mentioned as the basis multiple times) or any other BioWare RPG? How would that even WORK in co-op? Why would that be a "won't buy without" feature? Are we talking about the same game? The game deserves a much closer look than "no co-op no moneys!" #kotakureviewroundup
@sheepofdoom: No, I've never played Baldur's Gate and I have no intention to either. Not that it matters, I have obviously not been keeping up with Dragon Age very closely or I never would have been under the impression that it had online coop. Dur.
I have played BioWare RPGs, Mass Effect and KOTOR. I don't how it would work, but I'm not a developer and therefore it is not my job to figure out such.
And no, I am simply not interested in the game. The only reason I was interested at all was because I thought it was a multiplayer RPG. Which I was interested in trying it out with my friends. However since it is not, there are plenty other games for me to play and enjoy that are either out or coming out in short order, like Modern Warfare 2. #kotakureviewroundup
Here's my question, does anybody hold off buying a game until a particular source reviews it? I would think those who want to buy it already have, and those who haven't won't.
To those clamoring for the Demon's Souls review, are you hinging your purchase on this upcomming review, or have you already bought the game and waiting to see if your opinions of the game are echoed/validated by the review?
@AncientUnknown1: A lot of people like to make sure that games don't have any serious glaring flaws before they buy unproven titles.
I generally don't really need reviews, as I can get a pretty good idea of a game's quality simply by the all the previews and various announced features. #kotakureviewroundup
@AncientUnknown1: I don't need reviews most of the time, but there are a few games that i may need more than just reviews to make my mind on them.
Dragon age origins and Darksiders are perfect example of those games that i need more than just reviews and word of mouth in order for me to make a choice on them ^_^ #kotakureviewroundup
@AncientUnknown1: I never wait for one source to review a game. If 10 other sites have given a game a great score, of course I'm going to buy it. If there is a game that I'm on the edge about, but then a source that I like a lot (i.e. Kotaku) speaks highly of it, I would probably consider getting it sooner. I'm not really into buying games "blind", but I don't wait for a particular source to review something either. It's nice, but not necessary, for the purchase of a game to me. #kotakureviewroundup
Tip to Kotaku, if you need exp, head to Storm King area and use the sword you get there to build up the souls. You can also leave your soul sign in the passage between Storm King and Old Hero to help other people with the boss. If you're lucky, you may also be summoned to a Hard Mode boss fight by an advanced player and rack in the souls from kills if you can manage to keep yourself alive. You do need that sword however for an easier time.
Also the destroyed hut can be a site of protection from the enemies if you charge right into that house and avoid being in plain sight. If you have the sword you can lock on and kill the flying mantas from in there while being protected. Also you can avoid the barrage from Storm King when he swoops down as well. #kotakureviewroundup
@Griefy: As an all-melee character, I found world 2 much harder than world 4... until I just grinded the souls I needed to get 10 mag/10 int and Soul Arrow. #kotakureviewroundup
@Koztah: Yeah, I played Royal so Soul Arrow just made almost the entire game a breeze. If I had to, I would lead an enemy to an open area where I could run around sound and cast spells at it. Good thing enemies as well can not go past scenery. I'm more of a Warrior Type though but after you get Fire Storm... well shit just dies fast. 2 hit kill on first Prison Boss. #kotakureviewroundup
