And to get some Mass Effect 2 items get Dragon Age Origins.
Pre-order bonus's n stuff are getting really sucky when you need to get a different game to get stuff
Well sure you might feel gypped if you're not interested in CO but you're a big Star Trek fan and this is giving away those precious beta slots to people who might not give two shits about STO. On the other hand though closed betas aren't always easy to get into unless you jump some hoops and hey if you have the money to blow this is an easy and convenient way to get in.
I'd never call myself a huge fan of Star Trek, but I like the original cast movies (cept 4) and TNG show. The exploration and philosophical ideas is what I really dig about the series. Everything outside of those 2 realms has been iffy at best to me, including the new film. I'm interested in STO but mostly because it looks to slam the focus right back on exploration. If they can live up to the idea of randomly generated worlds that don't suck, I'll be there for the long haul. But I don't really have any ambition to play Champions, and I won't sign up for 6 months minimum just to get in on STO.
@jargy1: What? lol I thought ST IV was awesome. It was fun and original (at the time), but I guess if you were in it for the exploration and philospophical ideolgies, IV was a bit lacking. Unless you take into account the cultural exploration of 80's San Francisco and the idea of "don't fucking kill animals to extinction." But of course, I agree, TNG is just baller. And the new film sucked, enough said.
So yeah, I'm a HUGE Star Trek fan and i'm definitely interested in STO. But they've been worrying me for a while with the direction their taking. No ship interiors? Wtf. I want my captain's chair!! Hahaha.
The thing I don't get though, is the whole randomly generated worlds. I think it's kind of lame, unless they somehow implement it in an amazing way. Like I said, I'm a huge Star Trek fan and if they just disregard the Star Trek star charts...eh, kinda lame. But like I said, if they can somehow have "unknown" space or something (hopefully more creative than that), it could work. They'll just have to be clever about it.
Oh...and yeah, I'm not buying Champions for a beta. Thats just a waste of money (unless one actually has interest in the game).
Buying a lifetime subscription to any MMO is such a bad idea. Most games don't last long enough to see the benefit of a lifetime subscription. Look at those people that bought lifetimes to Hellgate: London.
@KillerBee: A $200 price tag for a lifetime subscription amounts to a year and eight months at the "discount" subscription price of $10 and just over a year and one month for the normal subscription price.
MOST MMOs last far longer than a year, my friend. Hellgate is a junk example. If you are going to go ballistic over this game and play it for more than a year, savouring the content and all that, then the lifetime price tag is a sweet deal.
It's not a bad idea; it's a gamble. You probably just don't have any cajones. ;)
@KillerBee: Hellgate is a bad example, because it was not a MMO, which is the reason why MMO pricing failed to work.
The negative buzz on Hellgate London existed months before the game was released. So the people who bought it should just learn from their mistake and move on.
Lifetime subscriptions on MMOs do make sense. I bet I have spent more on monthly fees on WOW to buy 2 lifetime subscriptions at what Champions Online is charging.
I plan on playing the champions online open beta, if I like it I might get the lifetime subscription.
The only problem with lore and technology coming together. I guess every planet will have "anti-teleportation" devices or something.
And I dont ever want to play a games beta. MMORPGs are buggy enough AFTER a bet, why the fuck would I want to play one during? Submitting problem logs would be like a second job. And what do you get for your hard work? A character wipe.
Fuck. That.
@(Hollow) svenhoek:
Character wipes are fine. Why the hell would you want to be max level when a game goes from beta to retail?
You already know what to do, and will be more than ahead of others not in the beta once the game goes live as well. Helps to level the field a bit, and make sure that the in-game economy isn't completely broken the minute all the live servers are turned on.

For me, at least, the big appeal of betas has been that it's essentially a free preview of the game. MMO's can be expensive to play, and most people only play one at a time. Betas serve as a way to get an idea of whether you're interested in one or not without having to buy it or go through the trouble of getting some sort of free guest pass or waiting until the disc is either free or dirt-cheap. Also, some people enjoy helping to catch problems in games before they come out.
Of course, paying $60 for a Champions online subscription to get into the beta defeats the biggest part of that, the "free" part, but presumably if you do that you're either also planning to play a lot of Champions Online, or you really, really want to get the chance to play STO early.
But anyway, they're purely voluntary. If you don't like participating in betas, then don't. Some people do.
@SeedyXX needs coffee: Agreed.
I do enough bug testing as is, for work, and to do to that in an MMO requires A LOT more work than any average beta tester probably puts in :P
@(Hollow) svenhoek: Oddly, having played in betas for quite a big number of MMOs now, I have to admit that in every case I enjoy the games while they are in beta far more than I do after the go gold.
The communities are always much nicer in the beta, there are no gold farmers and the 'atmosphere' on the whole is far more pleasant. Then, once the game comes out, everything goes to hell.
@SpishackCola is The Black Squiggly!: Ya, but to me it feels like there is no incentive to do it. Did anyone get a mount, a pet, anything for doing the WoW beta? I think not, but I might be wrong. It would be nice if beta testers got some incentive for putting in the time and work. Not anything with monetary value, just a token of some kind.
