On their own, maybe not worth a post but together, hey, it's the weekend, so here's a funnies page for you to spread on the living room floor.

Remember, if you're a Madden gamer and want in on the KFC (Kotaku Football Conference), that announcement will be at 1 pm MDT (3 pm Eastern, noon Pacific)

This one apparently came off of Facebook. I friended the guy who created/posted it, I'll let you know if anything comes of that. Also, someone run out and register www.muahahahahahahahahaha.com

And proof again there is nothing new under the sun.

<![CDATA[ The Legend Of Zelda: The...Philosophy Book (Huh?) ]]> Billed as a work that "puts video games on the philosophical map as a serious area of study", The Legend of Zelda and Philosophy is seeking to ask, and answer, the burning questions surrounding the Zelda series. Does Link have a will, or do gamers project their wills onto him? Can Hyrule be seen as an ideal society? How does time function? Is Zelda art? All terribly vague, all terribly pretentious, all making this sound less like an interesting book on the series and more like a bad first-year philosophy term paper. Since we're on the topic of a Zelda book, however, if a publisher feels like releasing a large, expensive, coffee table book of the series' concept art (complete with notes from artists and game designers), we may be a little more receptive.

<![CDATA[ Rasslin' for Link ]]> As this is the weekend, let's open up with some classic Saturday-morning fare: Professional wrestling. Think that emblem on rassler Cody Rhodes' boot above is just a coincidence? Nope. Rhodes not only pays tribute to the Triforce in every bout, not only lives his professional life by its creed, he also replays The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past every year on his Super Nintendo. So when he stamps Power, Courage and Wisdom into your face, sumbitch comes by it honestly.

GoNintendo was dubious at first that Rhodes deliberately put the Triforce on his boots. But the grappler makes it pretty damn clear in the latest issue of WWE Magazine:

"It's the Tri-Force from The Legend of Zelda," Rhodes confirmed. "You know how some people have a book they re-read every year? Well I re-play The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for Super Nintendo every year. In the game, the Tri-Force symbolized power, wisdom and courage. I thought I could apply those qualities to my life."

In 1992 I actually refereed a pro rasslin' match in North Carolina. It's a long-ass story how I ended up doing that. But on the card was this clown who went by Mean Mark. Mean had Scripture printed on the ass of his trunks, which, if I was the Lord, I'd kind of grimace and nod at the sentiment but not really feel complimented, you know? Now 16 years later a value set inspired by a video game gets better treatment on a nationwide stage.

As for me, I replay Red Dead Revolver about halfway every year. It teaches me that revenge is a great and awesome goal but gets real boring after about the fourth time.

<![CDATA[ Zelda Team Working on New Games ]]> miyamoto_zelda.jpg Don't forget. Nintendo doesn't just make Wii Fit and Brain Age. It makes other games, too. Games like The Legend of Zelda. About which, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto says:

I think we'd gotten to a point where videogames were something that everyone could no longer enjoy. As a designer, I'm always focusing on what is fun — ideas that people can enjoy. For me, I'm trying to entertain as many people as I can, creating games that the widest number of people can enjoy. Of course, that being said, we do have the existing teams at Nintendo working on the kinds of products we've always made over the years. The Zelda team is forming again to work on new games! But to me, it's about finding these new interactive experiences and bringing them to people.

<![CDATA[ Virtual Archery Bow Puts Link..And Rambo...To Shame ]]> Most Wiimote accessories are pitiful mockeries of the real thing. Cutesy, plastic tennis rackets don't make me feel like Andre Agassi. And the Wii Zapper doesn't make me feel like a Dirty Harry. But this Virtual Archery Bow by Thomas Foo is a full-blown bow made out of a full-blown bow. The only thing it's missing are the arrows...which we're thinking would put flying Wiimotes of yore to shame in a heartbeat. Here's a picture of the game he made for the peripheral, Trajectory:

wiibow2.jpgThere's no doubt—the Virtual Archery Bow is completely absurd. But it's almost poetic in its fanaticism. Is there something to be said for higher quality Wiimote accessories for the niche enthusiast?

As long as some people are willing to buy golf club extensions and tiny tennis rackets, why not just cut the foreplay, put a disclaimer on the package and offer the real thing?

<![CDATA[ Triforce Cutting Board, Now You're Playing With Flour ]]> For Kotaku's ever-growing chef contingent, this Zelda-inspired cutting board is built from the finest (we don't really know if it is the finest, but it sounds good) walnut and hard-maple wood for chopping as many leafy vegetables as it takes for gems to pop out. We know the $125 price tag will prove too hefty for some, but for what is surely the world's first foray into unlicensed, triforce-themed cutting blocks, we can't complain too much. Besides, we'd drop that amount in a heart piece if it included a bundled Master Sword Ginsu. We apologize for the lame puns. We're all done now.

<![CDATA[ Behind The Scenes Of The Fake Zelda Movie ]]>
IGN's Zelda movie prank by Rainfall Films probably broke a lot of fanboy hearts April 1st morning, but that doesn't mean a lot of love for the series wasn't put into the trailer. Requiring 3 months of work for a crew that peaked at 20 people, the first makeup tests actually started all the way back on July 20th of 2007. (Which means that when accounting for casting, costume design and general organization, its a date nowhere near the actual project's start.) Here's the making of video, which we promise doesn't end as badly as Adam's Kaketakumentary.

<![CDATA[ Forbes Predicts Future Classics ]]> The financial minds at Forbes have taken off their big business hats for a moment to focus on a more pressing topic: classic video games. Which of today's titles will become immortalized in our hearts, marble statue-ized into our next Super Mario Bros 3s that we can't put down a decade later? Well, they've compiled a list of their top ten and it's...actually not that bad. And of course, Mario has made an appearance.

Portal Brain Age 2 Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass BioShock Puzzle Quest Rock Band Super Mario Galaxy Wii Sports The Witcher WoW: Burning Crusade
Needless to say, a fiery debate will rage in the comments and give this list a good sorting. I'm actually not so sure about BioShock, of all choices, as single player FPS experiences don't seem to stand the test of time (meanwhile, multiplayer is a whole different story).

And now that the industry has become so successful at creating high quality, more polished sequels, will any of these titles really be in play a decade from now?

<![CDATA[ Frankenreview, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS) ]]> Since the last scene of the GameCube's Wind Waker, we've been craving cel-shaded Link at the lust level we generally reserve for booze, pantsu and headshots. So his triumphant return in The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the DS had us...how can we put this gently...playing the DS without a stylus.

So hit the jump for our Frankenreview on the newest Zelda title—offering almost enough time savings for you to finish school, get a job, become rich, buy the game and retire early to play it—because you don't need to click around and fight all the ads.

zeldagraph%282%29.jpgEurogamer
Phantom Hourglass follows the events of the GameCube's Wind Waker, and does an unbelievably successful job of aping its visual style too, wisely focusing on creating expressive and beautifully-animated characters rather than effects, or environmental detail. As happy as most fans were to see Twilight Princess revive Ocarina's epic mood, the immense charm and polish of Wind Waker's art deserved better than the scrap heap, and so it's a delight to see it continued here.

i_12860.jpgCVG
Controlling Link with the stylus is like riding a bike without holding the handlebars: you know it can be done, but at first you might worry that it's just a stupid thing to do. It's not. Stylus control of Link is a very cool thing. Say sayonara to the d-pad, then, and embrace the technology that makes Phantom Hourglass the most enjoyable Zelda game since Ocarina of Time.

GameLife
Hold the stylus anywhere on the screen, and Link will run in that direction. Tap an enemy and Link will rush forward and attack it. Slash back and forth and he'll swing his sword in a wide arc...You can also draw on the game's map, perfect for plotting your ship's course at sea or making notes about places of interest you might want to return to later. And simple actions like throwing a boomerang become novel again when you're drawing the path that it will take, directly on the screen.

i_12857.jpgVariety
In some cases, gamers are asked to unearth buried treasures by plotting intersections on a map. In others, the game relies on more devious brain twisters, one of which even involves hidden numbers and the use of cryptology. There's occasional repetition in the dungeons and at least two cases in which the puzzles are so complex that finding their answers seems more about luck than honest intellect. But overall, this "Zelda" game succeeds by keeping players' mind fully engaged.

Gamespy
One of the most satisfying reasons to explore hidden parts of the world is to find some of the many ship parts you can customize your vessel with. From your bridge to your cannon, you can take the ship to the shipyard and see just what kind of super-vessel you can come up with...Salvaging treasure from the bottom of the sea is represented by a simple mini-game that can be frustrating, since failure requires sailing back to the dock to get your salvage arm fixed, but is a nice diversion to have.

- Looks like it's a keeper. Now to finish Bioshock, Metroid, and Halo 3...this list is getting heavy and it's barely October.

<![CDATA[ The Zelda Vodka Luge (And Um... Mario Wedding Cake) ]]> We're well aware of the fact that some of our readers are so humorless, so singularly focused on complaining between bouts of waiting to die, that the posting of kitschy video game cakes makes their blood boil. But, when someone delivers frosted awesome into our tips inbox, giving us a view into their wedding day baked goods, we're just pleased as punch. Take, for example, newlywed Cory of Blizzard Entertainment who had this gorgeous cake designed to commemorate the last day of his bachelorhood featuring a three-tiered Super Mario Bros. stack of deliciousness.

Not quite sure why the underwater level is hovering over world 1-1... but who are we to nitpick something this tasty and gorgeous?

While cake may genuinely be my favorite thing to ingest, alcohol may come a close second. That's why I was doubly impressed to see the wedding's ice luge.

zelda_ice_luge.jpg

Yes, that's the Master Sword and Hylien Shield from The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time delivering ice cold vodka to wedding invitees. Could anything be more perfect?

Those in the SoCal area who are interested in achieving this level of nerd-cool at their next social gathering will be happy to know that Cory plugged the creators of both. Professional cake maker Erica Obrien was responsible for the Mario creation, with Union Ice doing their best to get everyone drunk at freezing temperatures.

Thanks a bunch, Cory!

Funny thing...I don't remember authorizing text messages when I sent in my contest entry (just to see how the contest worked mind you), and the rules for said contest don't mention anything about them contacting me outside of letting me know if I won, so it's rather annoying to be getting these unsolicited. <![CDATA[ New York Phantom Hourglass Launch Spectacular ]]> zeldahourglass.jpgHalo 3 isn't the only game that gets a fancy shmancy New York City launch event. Nintendo is kicking off the release of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass with a party on Sunday the 30th at the Nintendo World Store in Rockefeller Plaza. Fans will be able to get their picture taken with a Link facsimile, participate in costume contests and trivia quizzes, and from 2-4PM they'll be able to buy the game a day before release! The event runs from 1-4PM, with the costume contest taking place during the last hour, so you have extra time to squeeze into those tights. The only reason I didn't stay after the Halo event for this launch is that I am pretty damn exhausted. I'll be there in spirit though, even if I end up sleeping past 4PM.

<![CDATA[ The Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass ]]>
Alrighty, I'm going to try liveblogging some Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass play on my DS Lite. No clue how well this is going to work since it's such a tiny screen and I haven't landed a capture device from Nintendo yet.

OK, I'm going to get started now. Hit the jump to comment and ask questions, I'll try to keep an eye on the site and the comments to see what questions you might be asking. As always, don't watch if you don't want spoilers. This is my first time playing this part of the game, so I have no idea if there will be plot spoilers.

All done, but you can go back to Justin TV and watch the recording of my gameplay.

<![CDATA[ Nintendo Delivers Phantom Hourglass E-card ]]> The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass hits stores on October 1st, and to honor the occasion Nintendo has created a Phantom Hourglass e-card, complete with an exclusive video of the game in action. They've also created a handy-dandy countdown widget on their Zelda.com site, suitable for MySpace pages and personal blogs alike. Two doses of Zelda goodness to keep you going until the big day.

<![CDATA[ Nintendo's Easy Zelda Contest ]]> phantomeasy.jpgWant a chance to win a trip for two to New York City, complete with a $1000 shopping spree at Nintendo World, $500 spending money, a special edition gold Nintendo DS and a copy of Phantom Hourglass? No? Well okay then. I'll just sit here texting 'Zelda' to '20769' on my cell. Then I will receive a series of three trivia questions, which if replied to with the correct answers automatically enter me to win!. As a matter of fact, I just followed those directions, and the questions were ridiculously easy. Granted I won't be able to actually win the grand prize or any of the nine gold DS Lites reserved for finalists as a member of the press, so the more of you that enter the less likely it is I have to sadly decline or dress up like a woman and try to fake my way through it. No one needs to see that. Slightly more coherent details after the jump!

Nintendo News TXT 'Zelda' 2 '20769' 4 Chance 2 Win Trp 2 NYC, Shpng Spree @ N-10-do Wrld

Imagine flying to New York and having the entire Nintendo World® store available for your exclusive shopping pleasure. To mark the Oct. 1 launch of The Legend of Zelda®: Phantom Hourglass for Nintendo DS™, Nintendo is asking contestants to answer three Zelda-related trivia questions for the chance to win an amazing collection of prizes.

To receive the three trivia questions, contestants must text "Zelda" to 20769 or enter by mail by visiting Zelda.com between Sept. 13 and Oct. 26. People who answer all three questions correctly will automatically be entered into the contest.

One First Prize winner will receive a trip for two to New York, two nights at a hotel, a $1,000 closed-door shopping spree at Nintendo World, $500 spending money, a special-edition Nintendo DS and a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Nine Finalists will receive a special-edition gold Nintendo DS and a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Winners of the first prize and their guests must be 18 or older.

Even if you aren't a Zelda trivia whiz, you can join in the countdown to the launch of one of the most anticipated titles of the year by downloading your own Zelda hourglass countdown widget to your favorite social networking site or even your desktop. Available on Zelda.com, the Zelda hourglass widget will mark the seemingly endless days until the launch of the game and provide exclusive information, tips and tricks via a weekly RSS feed.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass marks the classic series' debut on the portable Nintendo DS. It follows the visual style of the hit The Legend of Zelda®: The Wind Waker™ and takes Nintendo DS to new heights, both in terms of the graphical abilities and game-play mechanics. It's a classic Zelda experience that can be controlled entirely using the stylus on the DS touch screen. Two players can even compete wirelessly, either across the room or across great distances using Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection, Nintendo's wireless gaming service.

<![CDATA[ New Nintendo Tchotchkes Make Owning Keys Fun Again ]]> I'm perfectly content to go keychain-less, as I generally wear skin-tight leather pants everywhere I go, but I may have to revise my policy for a pair of new import goodies from Bandai and Yujin. On the left we have the mini Wii-mote projector, one that throws a spotlight featuring the Nintendo character of your choice—as long as it's from Super Paper Mario, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess or Wario Ware Smooth Moves—upon anything your heart desires.

Only slightly less thrilling are the new The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass sound drops, featuring familiar sound bites from the Nintendo DS game.

All are available for pre-order at National Console Support. Yay for plastic!

<![CDATA[ Yes, Miyamoto Likes Phantom Hourglass ]]> Screw critics and consumers. What does Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto think about The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass? That guy is a perfectionist and no doubt would come down hard on something that wasn't quite up to par. The game's producer Eiji Aonuma dishes:

Of course, he checked the fundamental parts at the beginning. Then, I asked him to play an almost finished version. Some time later he called me and all he said was that it was fun and he thought it'd sell well.

Whew! Good, because the last thing you want to do is piss off Miyamoto. He'll eat you!

<![CDATA[ Camp Hyrule Open For Business ]]> Nintendo's annual Camp Hyrule festivities have commenced, giving The Legend of Zelda fans an understated opportunity to hang out anonymously and safely online with their peers. Plenty of poorly designed Flash-based games with camping themes await them, along with a heavily moderated bulletin board and loads of other goodies. Surprisingly, the site is barren of any mention of the next Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the Nintendo DS.

The meatiest section of the site is, of course, the Sweepstakes area, giving registered My Nintendo members a chance to win a full-size Link statue. Go on! Annoy your parents, wife and/or girlfriend with an unwieldy giant elf-boy replica. They'll loathe you for it.

<![CDATA[ Zelda. The Ocarina of Time. Best. Game. Ever. ]]> edge_100_240.jpgThe Nintendo 64 may not have had a great number of memorable releases, but it was fortunate enough to be home to the best game of all time, The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time. That accolade was presented by UK video game magazine Edge who have released their latest list of "The Best 100 Video Games", a 260-page publication due to hit newsstands across the pond tomorrow. The top ten, dominated by Nintendo-developed titles, follows.

1. The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time (N64)
2. Resident Evil 4 (Multi)
3. Super Mario 64 (N64)
4. Half-Life 2 (PC, Xbox)
5. Super Mario World (SNES)
6. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
7. Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox, PC)
8. Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
9. Tetris (Multi)
10. Super Metroid (SNES)

According to the editors of Edge, the listing was determined by factoring in thousand of votes from its readers, feedback from "creatives working in the videogame industry" and "countless rounds of deliberation among the Edge editorial staff."

Having played all but one of these games to completion, it looks to be a fairly solid but totally safe list of fan favorites. They wouldn't have necessarily been my top ten, but at the very least, they're all damn good games. Except for Super Mario 64. Sweet Jesus, did that game eat a bag of dicks.
