I can agree that if certain kids are pouring hundreds of hours into music video games, then they should pick up a real instrument and start learning how to make their own music. But, most people just want to have fun with friends. As far as listening to their music, what difference does it make to them whether people are staring at a wall or jamming out on plastic instruments while listening to their music? I personally often get a much better appreciation for the songs since I have to pick out the different parts and notice things that I wouldn't if I were just a passive listener.
@mR.Waffles: Yet another person with no idea what they're talking about.
1) Jack White is 34. Hardly the "old guard". Unless you consider the "New Guard" to be bands such as the Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana, and whatever other shlock Disney churns cycles in every few years.
2) Led Zepplin irrelevant? Seriously? They're Led Zepplin. They've been around since the 60s. I suppose that means bands like Boston, The Who, and Pink Floyd are no longer relevant?
Suddenly #1 is starting to make a lot of sense. Tell me, do you only base your knowledge on music around the songs you've heard in the last week? Do you use American Top 40 to tell you what's relevant? Yeah...you probably do.
@Daniel Pizarro Sánchez: To me it looks more like a bunch of people posting nonsense like "Jack White is a dinosaur" and "Led Zepplin isn't even relevant" getting chewed out for not even being close to intelligent.
I mean seriously...go back and read some of the drivel getting posted. There's a number of people calling Jack White "old" when he's in his 30s...and just as many people who think that he was only relevant back in the 60s/70s when he wasn't even ALIVE.
@brainFUBAR: While I'd love to think that's a possibility...there may be some legal risks involved if they do something like that. And there's always the potential that one of those tracks accidentally falls onto the Music Store (like how "Pick Up the Pieces" by Average White Band did in Europe a month or so before release)
Now, that's not to say the HMX staffers don't go home and do it on their own time, but I'm guessing there's an unspoken rule at the actual offices to not have those kind of things around.
I love me some White Stripes, but allowing Blue Orchid to be in GH5, then turning around and calling the genre "sad" is making me put a permanent palm-shaped indentation in my face.
@ShoopDaBoofs: Yeah get out, popular music publication disagrees with you so you are clearly wrong!!! If you don't think the same as the popular thought then you, sir are a tool!!
@TRT-X: What, nobody told you those awards ceremonies were political? Come on now.
Not to mention anyone claiming he's one of the "greatest songwriters" seriously needs to expand their horizons...I am deeply depressed by the mass opinion people formulated thinking The White Stripes are just the most amazing band ever.
@ShoopDaBoofs: Hmmm...funny. I don't recall saying anything about them being the best ever. But thanks for taking the strawman approach to debate.
@ShoopDaBoofs: Judging by your comments (which amount to "Everything that people likes SUCKS!") I'm going to wager you're one of those "non-conformist" douchebags who shops at Hot Topic because it's "cool" to pretend you know whatever retro TV show their latest batch of shirts has plastered on the front.
@weeman_com: Yeah who the heck needs good musicians like Jimmy Page or Jack White. Everyone knows the Jonas Brothers are best musicians ever. Who isn't fond of them neither?
@Malfunktion v2: LOL at the third person today to think that Jack White is "old".
Makes you wonder just how much they're talking out of their ass...since they're primary argument is based on on something that's impossible (Jack White being on the radio in the 70s)
@ryoshi: Yeah, I'm pretty sure most of the people in this thread are just reflexively responding to somebody dissing videogames and basically have no idea what they're talking about.
@TRT-X: Yes, completely ignore the Fact that Jimmy Page was also part of the interview and happens to be a member of band that was on the radio in the 70s
@QualityJeverage: Uh, it *is* actually kind of sad. Some of these kids hadn't heard of Black Sabbath until Guitar Hero. If you don't think that's kinda off then I don't know what to tell you.
@ryoshi: I really don't think it's off, at all. It's a different world, and the kids are into different music. People need to learn to deal with it.
Whether the music is better or not is another discussion, but the people who keep whining about how the kids don't like the "classics" just come off to me as, like I said, old guys crying about the good old days. Even if White is just 34, it's the same sentiment.
@svenhoek: SUCK IT MARIAN HOSSA!: How is it nit-picking? Have you seen the string of comments from users claiming stuff like "Led Zepplin is irrelevant", "Jack White is a dinosaur", and (my personal favorite) "These guys only fans were pot smokers back in the 70s"?
How the heck is a guy who's 34, still actively producing music between three different bands...and STILL charting today considered "old" or "classic".
If that's old/classic...that would mean the only thing allowed to be "new" and "relevant" would be stuff like Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers simply because they're still in their 20s.
@TRT-X: So modern that no one knows it? Its their job to get us to notice them, not our job to notice them. You can't say a lack of knowledge is our fault, when in reality, its theirs.
And yet everyone here has heard of the Jonas Brothers.
That teenage girls will buy into whatever boy band happens to be oversaturating the market. And then once a younger/cuter boy band starts getting a bit more oversaturated, they'll jump ship right on over to that one and the other will simply get old and not bother.
Sounds like a couple of soon to be broke asshats. I especially cant stand the white stripes guy, for him to even be in the same documentary with the zepplin guys should be considered a crime.
Also to call yourself "The Edge' Makes you almost as big of a douche bag as Bono. If it weren't for GH3 i wouldn't be listening to Muse or Dragonforce, since i don't listen to the shitty ass radio, especially since they are reverting back to playing the same shit they played in the 90's when i did listen to the radio, its one of the few venues other than the Internet where i discover new music. Zepplin should be paying these people to put them in their game, if they don't they will disappear into irrelevancy.
@Danimal: OH yes, zepplin is totally relevant today, go ask a 13 year old how much he enjoys Stairway, or to name members of led zepplin. You idiots don't have to tell me about how long they have been around etc etc. TIME IS PASSING and they arent releasing new albums and will soon be in the genre of oldies to be forgotten by anyone under the age of 60.
Listen i grew up on Zepplin, The Who, all these "Classic" bands, but they arent making music anymore, and MTV sure as fuck aint playing them. You guys can all assume your undying love for a 40 year old band is going to keep them relevant but its just not the case. Its why bands like The Who agreed to do games like rockband, so people like you and i who have kids have a way to keep the music alive.
Children are not out there pursuing the classics of zepplin like you all think, they are listening to the White Stripes who in all his bitching has a song in a video game so he can stay relevant.
@Dillinger23: You're right, teens these days COMPLETELY determine which kinds of music will have staying power.
That's why bands such as the Backstreet Boys, N-Sync, 98 Degrees, LFO, Hanson, the Spice Girls, New Kids on the Block, and such other popular teeny bopper acts have had such amazing staying power even years after they broke up.
