Spore Creature Creator Coming Before Spore
While we all know when we can expect Spore (psst, that's Sept 7th in the US and Sept 5th in Europe), apparently fans will get a small taste of the game before the full retail version ships. A separate, creature-editor edition Spore SKU will be out before the full version. Pricing and exact dates are not known, but the creatures made in this program will be usable in the full retail version to come. We'd hope that it would be free, but the last time we assumed anything someone made a really bad "ass" pun.
Can't wait for September 7? Creature-only Spore to launch sooner [Joystiq]

Ben 10: Protector Of The Earth Website Opens
People seem to really love Ben 10. The Cartoon Network show crosses the lines between kids and adults and when I saw the game demoed at Comic-Con, both sets of ages were there, enjoying the game with equal abandon. I tried it out myself and even though I wasn't terribly familiar with the show, the game was pretty fun. With the game's launch not far off, D3 Publishers has premiered the game's website which is now open and ready for your rather stringent approval. I'm sure you'll have plenty to say about it.
Halo Fever
If you couldn't tell, Halo Fever is in full force right now. The game may not be perfect (sorry Eurogamer) but it certainly has its selling points and I think Microsoft's boast that they want to dethrone Spider-Man 3's mammoth opening weekend with a mammoth Halo 3 launch day aren't that outlandish.
We've sent our very own Fahey over to New York City to check in on the Halo-mania going on later on tonight. Remember at the stroke of midnight you can pick up a copy of the last in the Halo trilogy... unless you picked it up at one of the many places that seemed to have sold the game early. Once you play through the entire game I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
In the meantime sit back and check out these pictures from New Zealand, the first place in the world where Halo 3 launched. Nicole Sinclair and Ryan Marsden, both 19, were the first two in the world to pick the game up from a retailer.... who didn't break embargo.
New Zealand Microsoft also celebrated the launch by freezing 50 prize discs in a one ton block of ice. Gamers have until 6 a.m. to melt the ice with water guns and get the prizes.

Kotaku's Halo 3 Launch Plans
It's time to announce Kotaku's super-secret, hyper-exciting plans for the biggest game launch of the year! Tada! You can't see it from where you are sitting, but I just struck a dramatic pose. Yes, our plans for the Halo 3 launch, with the majority of our staff either traveling home from or still in Japan that evening, is me. Specifically me, in New York, attending the official Halo 3 New York launch at the Best Buy at 529 5th Ave, where there will be prizes, giveaways, local athletes I won't recognize (go sports ignorance!), Major Nelson, and at midnight - "a spectacle unlike any other." I don't know, I've seen more than my fair share of spectacles, so that's a pretty tall order there. Meanwhile, my copy of Halo 3 will be sitting in a GameStop in Atlanta, feeling terribly neglected. If you plan on hitting up the NYC launch, I'll be the 6'5" man with the shaved head carrying an uncomfortably heavy backpack around, possibly sweating profusely. Me, not the backpack. Hit up Major Nelson's blog for more details on the New York launch, as well as the official launch events in LA, Miami, and Seattle.Halo 3 Launch Extravaganza
We woke up this morning thinking it would be another normal day, not realizing that according to Microsoft PR, it's Halo 3 Day. Woo hoo! Their latest announcements have some interesting tidbits on the Halo 3 megalaunch. So we're going to play a game. The press release lists the "facts," and we translate them into more digestible content.

More »Space Giraffe Gets Launch Blog
Having listened to the howls of disappointment from my boyfriend every time some news is released about Jeff Minter's psychedelic shooter Space Giraffe (usually that the release isn't here yet. And still isn't here. And still isn't here ...), I'm glad that those will soon be coming to an end. Or we hope, at least - the Llamasoft website has a blog up about the release and assorted game details which means launch should be imminent. More »

Launches are Letdowns, Even Bioshock
Producing AAA games is not a grueling marathon, it's a multi-year Ironman tournament. And at the end, the "winners" often feel less like partying than puking up a bit of blood and lying down to take a nap. That's why Bioshock's Ken Levine has this to say about releases:
...launches are usually such abstract things. You wake up launch morning and it's like, "Hey, our game has, umm, shipped to retail!" It's not exactly like headlining at Madison Square Garden.Luckily, Levine is enjoying a few Bioshock parties before waking on launch day, trapped by a lack of existential optimism that no party hat can replace.

Microsoft Opens Up in Second Life
Well, some form of it. There's a Microsoft Island now in Second Life that is devoted to Visual Studio ( Microsoft's flagship software development product for computer programmers.). The teaser video shows what most of the studio looks like, the rest will be revealed tomorrow, May 10, at 6pm Second Life time. It's unclear what Microsoft is planning to do while in Second Life, but it's got a whole lot of room to put Xbox Elites in (in a weird PS3 "Home" kind of way). Even computer programmers need a little down time. More »

Xbox Crashes French PS3 Launch
At the PLAYSTATION 3 launch event in Paris, Microsoft found an opportunity to do a little guerilla marketing by sending French gamers queueing up for a PS3 a kind reminder via boat. You can check the video here, but don't forget to view the... splendor of the midnight launch event over at Jeux-France. They have loads of shots of the, um, festivities. More »

Only Three People Lining Up In London For PS3
In America, people lined up days, no weeks, before the PS3 launched. People with eBay stars in their eyes and money to burn. In England, we are hours away from the console's launch. Retailer GAME canned its midnight launch and will be selling the console early Friday morning. The Virgin Megastore has already opened its doors to "campers," turning the ground-floor into a makeshift "campsite." How many people are in line? Hint: You can count them on one hand. Kat from Shiny Media swung by the Virgin on Oxford Street and has this to report: More »

UK Retailer GAME Cancels Midnight PS3 Launches
Citing "customer safety" as the reason for nixing 12:01 AM sales of the PLAYSTATION 3 for this week's launch, UK specialty retailer GAME says they'll instead open stores at 7 AM to meet early adopters' needs. However, to make up for a lack of one nights sleep, GAME will be giving the first 150 gamers in line a tasty English breakfast, including something called "bacon butties." The hell?! More »

UK Police to Sony: Launch Earlier, We're Afraid of the Dark
In anticipation of the PS3's UK launch, police are fearing mugged fanboys, stolen consoles and everything short of the ground opening from under the doomed European gamers, swallowing up their soon-to-be-melted-by-molten-lava PAL PS3s. Authorities told GameIndustry.biz:If the launches do go ahead, we have to negate the issues as far as we can, but we can't remove the risk factors for people coming to or going away from the store. The police seriously pulled out the old, "If the launches do go ahead" verbage?
