one laptop, one child

One Laptop, One Gameplayer?

I'm sure by now most everyone has heard of the one laptop, one child program. Back in 2002 an MIT professor traveling in Cambodia was struck with the idea of getting affordable, durable, low-energy laptops into the hands of every child in the world. To do this he helped found One Laptop per Child, which worked to create a cheap laptop which met those needs.

The XO is that laptop. The XO is hard drive free, has a very low power consuming screen and super powerful Wi-Fi antennas, but the neatest this is the XO's design, which features a "transformer hinge", allows it to function as an educational laptop, and e-reader and even a gaming device. The laptop features what appear to be a D-pad and perhaps a thumbstick of some sort built into the front of the case on either side of the screen, according to the site.

The Gaming Laptop

Let's forgo, for now, the argument about whether PC gaming is limping along on its last leg. While a worthy topic, It's not what's tickling my grey matter right now. Right now I'm trying to decide if it makes sense for me to buy a gaming laptop.

I've actually never owned one of these beasts, but have often looked on with not a small amount of envy at people who do. The thing is, right now I have a pretty powerful, dare I say Crysis powerful, desktop. But my laptop is a petite ultralight. A decide that I hold near and dear to my heart both because of the abuse it has withstood and because of it's obnoxiously long battery life and ability to help me file stories from anywhere, anytime.

But the more I travel the more I wish I had a laptop that allowed me to play and review games on the road. But even if I were to buy a laptop for gaming, I frankly have no idea which makes the most sense. I do know I'd like to have something that is robust and not really damn big. If such a thing exists, I'd also like a laptop that would allow me to upgrade the graphics cards. Oh, and I'd rather it not cost more than my house.

Any suggestions?

this one's for the ladies

A Gaming Laptop For The Gals

I have this debilitating problem that requires me to cause some pretty bad damage to my credit cards whenever I think something is cute or "hot" (and yes, no matter how many times I try to fix it, the "hot" voice really does sounds like Paris Hilton). Macs have always been good to me, but I can not count on my fingers and toes how many times I have not been to do something because I wasn't on a PC including gaming. At the Computex 2007 Taipei, the GX700 from MSI was displayed as a 17" gaming notebook that is clearly marketed towards women. It boasts of a 1.3M embedded webcam, Intel Centrino Duo mobile technology, nVidia Geforce 8600M GT 512MB, Full DiretX 10 support, HDMI output, 4.1 Channel Speakers and optional Embedded TV Tuner. In other words, they made a PC notebook that works and isn't fugly. No pricing or availability has been let out of the bag just yet, but hopefully it's cheaper than those customizable Commodore 64's, and a lot easier to carry from place to place. More »

Behold The Portable Wii

It is a dream of mine to one day have the money to commission Ben Heckendorn to create a custom console all my own, but as it stands I am flying to New York next weekend to party with some of you people and don't own any socks without holes in them. Instead I daydream of owning something as awesome as the custom Wii laptop Ben has created for Engadget. This semi-sleek little number has everything you need to get your Wii on wherever you go. Imagine how much fun it would be to sit down in a crowded plane, whip this baby out and start swinging your arms about like a madman. More »

Wii-mote vs. Laptop

There's something about the Wii-mote that induces flailing. First some toothy dude snaps the controller's strap, sending the Wii remote into his TV, and now, a busted laptop screen. Writes Ugamer_X in the CAG forums: More »

Steampunk Laptop

I type this from my bathtub, where I am currently transmitting raw text directly from my sinuses into a copper receptor dish situated atop my viewing screen in the other room. The water is tepid and I am clammy with soap scum and the patina from my plate-and-rivets bath ducky. More »

Dungeons & Dragons Laptop

Gizmondo has unearthed a Dungeons & Dragons Laptop. The Pegasus 650 gaming notebook features a big ass image from Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach spray painted onto its cover. That's really it. You'd think they would have at least included a sack of dice or some Doritoes with it. More »
