Oh irony that I read kotaku when I am in Japan to get US gaming news and now it will redirect me to Japanese Kotaku which I decidedly do not want.
At least you guys will let me access the US one as well. When Lifehacker Japan launched there was no way past the redirect and I stopped reading it for a while. ;(
I assume Kotaku Japan's target market is Japanese people who want to know about US gaming?
Not sure if Brian or anyone will see this comment, but I have a small suggestion concerning the Japan site (heck, I even registered to make it).
I live and work in Japan and I was really interested in visiting the site from my office, but the advertisements seem kind of inappropriate for general viewing - compared to Kotaku US, the whole front page was pretty 'maximum risky'.
I know you guys have to get advertising support to actually run the site, but perhaps the site could stay closer to the Kotaku US model and not so much the Danny Choo one?
Kotaku US is one of the best gaming sites out there right now and I'd really like the Japanese audience to get the same kind of quality experience that we get.
Thanks for the reply! I actually run Adblock plus in Firefox so I'll set it to block the ads, but doing so also prevents me from giving Kotaku Japan click-through revenue.
I think the ads are probably running through some kind of generic ad aggregate server, and when I visit the site right now the top banner and left ad both contain really busty animated characters in very small bikinis. They are advertising a free MMORPG.
I hate to sound like the prude in this kind of situation (I don't normally mind those kinds of ads), but without Adblock plus it's impossible to visit the site from work. Since I have Kotaku US, it's not a big deal, but for the Japanese audience it might serve as a barrier to visit the site. This is especially unfortunate because the articles I saw on the front page are pretty interesting.
@Pizzaman: Yeah I tried that as well. It's not run by Gawker Media, so we'll have to start a new account. It appears to be the same process as Kotaku U.S..
@simplyPARTICLE: Actually, a UK based edition of Kotaku would be a pretty good idea.
Or at least just more acknowledgement of the UK gaming scene on Kore Kotaku. Considering the UK is such a huge gaming market (a little under half of all European game sales are in the UK...), it's pretty shameful to constantly see us being under-represented on major sites such as Kotaku.
Sure there's the occasional release date announcement (though no-where near as extensively covered as US dates), but as a market, we have different tastes to the US one and it would be nice to see previews/reviews/features etc being written from a UK gamer's perspective.
OOH a chance to use my star for good! I'm Weirdwolf and I approve of this comment!
Seriously, with no disrespect to our Antipodean cousins it's silly that there is a Kotaku Australia but no Kotaku Europe. The Australian market is miniscule compared to the other areas and Europe and in particular the U.K. has both a large market share,a long history with gaming and several well known companies that operate here.
I'd just like to add, you're turning Japanese! Ick! I do hope you washed your hands before typing that story young man!
@Alex Winton: I agree it would be good to have a bit more UK news here.
I was kinda joking about how I would translate US articles for the UK, which you would reply 'translate, translate what?', yes I would be lazy enough to do practically nothing and bask in my own supreme localising status all day without a care for the lack of job satisfaction which would most likely come from doing very little.
Although there probably wouldn't be that much to warrant a new site, an occassional columnist would be pretty excellent, there is some interesting stuff happening here. Even though I would point out that large game sales here are of mostly Fifa, other yearly updates, whatever nintendo are advertising and general rubbish. And don't forget the struggling gaming industry ( a bit of a generalisation, but with all our publishers gone and americanisation of most mainstream games from round these parts I'm sure I'm not 100% wrong).
Also, despite the UKs hatred of America (I kid), it just wouldn't be the same with a separate site, commenting on our own not being able to share our own self pity with those whom get earlier game releases and all around better deals.
To conclude,
occassional UK correspondent = good
Kotaku UK = probably the opposite of good

While we're on it, how about a new (alternative) design, Kotaku? That'd be ace. Ace!

On a sidenote, now I'll have to visit both versions of Kotaku whenever I do my rounds.

Can you run Firefox?
Try installing Adblock plus.
At least for a little while.

(I'm totally kidding, don't ban me!)
That's pretty cool. I wonder if, shall I say "less international" Japanese gamers will read the new site. Maybe it will become a sensation!
It'll be interesting to see how this works.
