Good! I'm one of the few people I know that is refusing to touch the multiplayer until I finish the campaign. I don't want any spoilers like "You play as a terrorist and assassinate Obama*!!" showing up before I've had a chance to find out for myself.
*Disclaimer: This post was purely comical and in no way does the postee desire/condone the killing of public officials. We cool, Government. #kotakugameclub
I was wondering when this would be resurrected. I actually wish the game was something other than MW2, something a bit more obscure and interesting than simply debating the terrorist imagery present in an ultra-real FPS. The Beyond Good and Evil discussions were really thought-provoking, but I see this discussion getting heated, fast. Especially when you consider the sheer number of people who will want to be a part of this session. Perhaps I'll sit in on the first one, to see how it goes. I'd really like to see you guys bring this back as a more regular activity with software that most people wouldn't normally know about or play on their own. #kotakugameclub
Are you doing MW2 just because it'll be new? I understand why you'd pick it out of the recent releases (as you mentioned it below), but I don't feel that MW2 is really a good subject compared to so many older games. I like the idea, but I feel it'd work so much better with some of the older games. Sure people will have already played through whatever game, but if you can generate a good first discussion it'll make them look at and see the game differently as they continue playing it. There are a ton of games that excel story-wise over MW and although I'm sure MW2's story will be good for a FPS, it is likely to be more because the story was told well than that the story was actually something special.
And finally, please don't try to look to hard into the plot and symbolism like last time. I don't say this to be offensive, but MW2's target demography is not the poetic waxing lit major or the analytical, politically informed person. It's the guy who wants to shoot himself some terrorists and feel like a badass that helps save or change the world with his guns before going online to shoot up his buddies. The story isn't going to be chock full of symbolism hidden in scripted badass moments, the story is going to be chock full of badass moments. This is why I'd rather see other games used; though this makes sense for it's popularity and timing, the actual content will probably be less than satisfactory if you're looking for a really good discussion. #kotakugameclub
@omgwtflolbbl: I'm doing it because it's major and new. If people do what I asked in the post, then we'll all be experiencing it together, like watching episodes of a new TV show. Seemed like a good one to go with, since lots of people have the game. We'll see how it goes! #kotakugameclub
It'll be hard not to play on, but luckily there's plenty of multiplayer to be had. I'm excited to participate in this game club. Looking forward to it Brian! #kotakugameclub
I'm loving this. It will totally stop me from being a lurker and actually comment once in a while. More incentive to buy Modern Warfare 2 now...I'll definitely be joining in the conversation. #kotakugameclub
@Bii Nii Wii Nii: Maybe I didn't explain it clearly. You're ALL part of the Game Club if you do what I wrote above and comment. My posts will just kick things off. The Club will be the conversation in the comments. #kotakugameclub
@Bii Nii Wii Nii: Look for that in a TAY. I'm sure someone will make one (or you can check on the forums: [talkamongstyourselves.freeforums.org]). I would suggest the Steam Group, but that might not be the happiest camp.

Jeez it's been over a year since you guys tried this. I figured you gave up since it just devolved into "symbolism blah blah symbolism blah blah symbolism blah blah blah" instead of (at least what I was looking for) being an interesting discussion about the mechanics behind game design and play. Too bad I'm waiting for the price to drop below $60 before supporting Activision's inflation of PC gaming prices.
Although I get the feeling I won't be missing much, considering MW2 - as with the original Modern Warfare - is going to be so chock full of controversy and symbolism that you guys can't wait to look at it from the plot angle (which is completely obvious to everyone and feels like high school homework) instead of the gameplay angle (which could result in learning more interesting subjects for game devs and players alike.)
Tell ya what, I'll even lead a special extra day of discussion about the game design if you guys pay for half my copy. ;-)
@DaveKap: So because the conversation isn't from a programmer or engineer's perspective, it's automatically shallow? I disagree. If every analysis of literature worked that way, strictly from the perspective of the author, what a shallow, incomplete education we would have. #kotakugameclub
I would just entirely skip the PC version. At this point, there seems to be no difference among the versions other than the fact that the PC one can use keyboard and mouse. #kotakugameclub
@DaveKap: The gun shooting the guy symbolizes the oil industry killing the common man via higher gas prices. The ammo counter depleting is obviously the dow jones declining. #kotakugameclub
@DaveKap: I think there's room for both parts here. If we are just talking about the story, well, I could read a good book and get the same experience out of that. If we talk about what parts of the game that are specific to the medium say about the story, then we might have a more interesting conversation. #kotakugameclub
@SecCom: Here's what's going to happen (and I'd love to be proved wrong.) MW2 is such an incredibly easy target, that the discussion will be around the controversial first level, whatever twist happens in the middle of the game, the inevitable "killed a bunch of people from afar" discussion, and the ending. There is going to be discussion about how those different things impact the gamer, how emotional/dramatic things are, and what developers can do to make it better or why few can make it as good.
High-brow discussion abounds and everyone forgets to talk about AI, balancing, controls, multiplayer, level design, engine design, music, graphics, and flow; the things that make a game what it is aside from plot.
I dunno about you guys, but I find that high-brow talk predictable and obvious. Again, I would love to be proved wrong, but it's what happened last time and why I (and others) grew completely uninterested. I hope for better this time around. #kotakugameclub
@DaveKap: I'll give it a try next week, if it devolves into why terrorism can or can't be done in video games I'll probably quit reading the discussions.
So far the story sounds pretty 24-ish to me, I mean this sort of plot happens all the time on that show. Somebody needs to infiltrate the terrorist cell, they end up having to do something they didn't want to, Jack makes a speech about how it was for the good of the country and people's lives were at stake yada yada yada. Repercussions are never really felt and (mostly) everyone goes on to fight another day. This has been done to death now, so maybe CoD will actually bring some fresh perspectives to this idea, but I doubt it. #kotakugameclub
@dirtybacon: I picked this one because, unlike the ones you listed, it will have separated levels. So it's easy to ensure that people have the same experience. We'll all be on the same page for the discussion. #kotakugameclub
@Michael Wayne Akridge: Not multi-plat so it limits the audience.
but would of been a great game to go through with, its so easily broken up in stages. #kotakugameclub
I look forward to this! Although I'm blatantly going to be weak, get hooked on the campaign and play all of it before I'm meant to...
I've always wanted something like this to be done for video games, especially for RPGS or rich, story driven games. This should be great fun! #kotakugameclub
@Ursus-Veritas: Aye, this does seem better suited to an RPG.
You don't tend to complete them in a few hours, so spreading it out over a few days or so should be easier.
And they tend to have a bit more meat to talk about.
DA:O would be a good one. I might set up one in parallel of this over at the forums. #kotakugameclub
@CustomFirmware: Isn't someone in that arrangement breaking the law? And if so, and I owned that indie game store, I wouldn't exactly be supporting you running around and shouting to the Heavens about having it already.
/shrug
Glad you enjoyed the game, it's probably a year out for me at this point. #kotakugameclub

I attended every one but it felt too much like skool, and Crecente didn't publish any of my comments (most of which were admittedly stupid)
