@BubbleF**kingBuddy: Well, to be fair, Street Fighter fans and King of Fighters fans are about the fighting game community equivalent of Football Team vs Chess Club.
Both games were a big disappointment to me. I hate that KOFXII got rid of the Tactical Shift System, and I hate that SFIV would have been more accurately titled "Street Fighter II 3D Remix".
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: To be honest, I think most of the people who complained about the lack of SFIII characters in SFIV felt like it was a smack in the face after all the loyalty they showed Capcom when their other 'fans' abandoned them upon learning many of the SFII characters weren't included in the roster.
The complete neglect of anything related to III (which consisted of many technically better characters than half of the SFII cast in my opinion.) was a bit insulting and an obvious realization that getting 'nostalgia bucks' and taking the easy path were more important then catering to those who embraced Capcom's creativity and eccentric characters in III, but that's just what I gather from their complaints.
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: I understand why they had SF2 characters. I find them generic as all get out, but I understand the move.
What I don't understand is that the most reference you see to SFIII is having Yun and Yang show up in Chun Li's intro, as if to say "Yeah, we're even acknowledging that the two youngest members of the SFIII cast are still old enough to have been in this game, but screw you SFIII fans anyway!"
Any SF3 love? Oh, hell no, says Capcom. 5 different variations of Ryu? Oh, hell yes, says Capcom.
@the7k: it makes sense from a storyline standpoint. i had read that 4 takes place after 2, and before 3 which although im sure they coulda added some characters from 3, but considering its still more of a shadaloo storyline sorta thing, none of them were involved in it
@Kcet: According to the storyline, Gen died of tuberculosis, Rose's body was taken by Bison, and Sakura should be significantly older.
Let's face the facts - if Capcom wanted to put SF3 characters in, they easily could have. It's not like Dan, Blanka, E.Honda and many of the others have storylines that focus on Shadowloo, or anything else.
I mean, look at El Fuerte and Rufus's stories. You think Capcom really gives a crap about story?
@the7k: "According to the storyline, Gen died of tuberculosis, Rose's body was taken by Bison, and Sakura should be significantly older."
I've been saying this over and over again: CAPCOM NEVER SAID WHAT ROSE AND GEN'S FATES WERE UNTIL SFIV CAME AROUND. The "storyline endings" of Rose and Gen were just assumed by fans, they were never confirmed by Capcom. Thus, they had free reign to put them in SFIV which is, despite your "evidence" to the contrary, a canon game. In addition, Sakura was also stated to be older in SFIV by the game's producer in an Arcadia interview.
@NeoChaos: It's called a retcon. Marvel does it all the time. You smudge the story so that things fit.
Putting Gen and Rose into SF4? A retcon. You know what could have been a great retcon? Putting SF3 characters in SF4.
Hell, why is Bison even in SF4? I'm pretty sure I remember seeing Akuma kill him right before you fought in Super Street Fighter II X. What, is the shit that happened in an in-game cut scene no longer canon?
And yeah, I know that Sakura is stated as 'Being Older'. Yeah, that's great - they changed a number. You know what would have been a better indication of her aging? Updating her character design. Hell, it's a 3D game - they could have easily made her original costume unlockable (or - knowing Capcom - charged money for it), it's just ridiculous to call a High School Uniform her fighting clothing or whatever excuse they came up with.
Next: Tekken 6 without the Kazamas, SoulCalibur V without Mitsurugi and Taki, GOWIII with an actual potato instead of Kratos...
Then release the characters as DLC after a few weeks, and bam! you've found the perfect way to charge an extra 10% for the "real", complete game. So much more effective than Vader/Yoda DLC.
Doesn't matter to me, I just hope the core gameplay is good. I heard some impressions from the E3 show floor that the game needs improvement. Keeping my fingers crossed. :)
@arniejolt: Complaining about Mai and 'K not being in the game is just as stupid as people complaining about SFIII characters not being in SFIV. While Capcom has officially released their stance on that already, SNK has not, and you will just have to wait until they release their stance on that.
@moidsch: Obtuse SF3 characters? Yeah, I guess Alex, Elena, Dudley, Yun and gang are just so much worse than those classics like Zangief, Dhalsim, Balrog, Fei Long and the rest of those incredibly generic characters from SF2.
@moidsch: Still, unless she was always part of the team you played with, I don't see why this is a no buy reason.
I play with Iori, Kyo, and Terry. I also use Mai and King. Therefore even though I will miss Mai until the DLC (I am sure there is going to be some) arrives, I still plan on having FUN with the game.
@EMPEROR_COW: You post with dignity. SFIV is a nice game and all, but I really hate the SFII cast and only bust it out to beat friends on-line. Otherwise, I'm still playing the Xbox Street Fighter Anniversary disc for Third Strike.
I am not sure how to feel. On one hand they've gotten better animations by a longshot by using 3D-models as bases and then drawing over them.
On the other hand, the sprites aren't as HD as I first thought when I look at them. It has what? 2 or 3 times as many pixels? With the technique they used they could've afforded to up it a little.
It's probably gonna be great, though, and a real treat playing.
Just too bad with Athena...she's destroying a lot for me with that face.
Also, France sure have a lot of sickly obese women at the same place
I was hoping the sprites would be a little cleaner but that is not a big deal. It still looks gorgeous so I'm keeping a close eye on this one as the release approaches.
@NyappyHeroism: yeah buddy, youre alone on that one just about. blazblue is going to get purchased by me because im a general fighting game fan.. but it will be a down the road buy. kof XII looks amazing and i wish sf IV went down that route.
as somebody already stated.. the character designs in blazblue make me think they should have just added sol badguy and called it guilty gear 3. i think the best designs ive seen in a game by aksys was in battle fantasia.. that game was awesome.
Having seen both games in action at the arcade, I can say BlazBlue looks about a million times better.
You'd think handdrawn backgrounds have the potential to be much more detailed and colorful than 3D ones, but BlazBlue's blow KOFXII's completely out of the water.
@Zolbrod: You can't compare 2D backgrounds to 3D backgrounds. Obviously, it's much easier to make a 3D background look better. It's a non-issue. The point being debated here is the sprites which are 2D in both games.

"WAAAAAH. THESE ARE ALL OLD CHARACTERS. WHERE ARE THOSE NEWER CHARACTERS FROM EX AND III THAT NOBODY BUT ME LIKED? WAH! HAVE SOME ORIGINALITY CAPCOM!"
Fan reaction to King of Fighters XII:
"WAAAAAAAAH! WHERE'S MAI? WHY CAN'T I BUSTER WOLF? CAPCOM BRINGS GUYS BACK ALL THE TIME, WHY CAN'T i HAVE GEESE BACK? CATER TO YOUR FANS BETTER, SNK!"
