@Indy_aka_Rex: Well, he's not entirely wrong. The consoles have limited life and impose arbitrary restrictions on developers (not the least of which is due to licensing and company image branding). It also detracts from open-ended architecture of the games, which also hurts developers in the long run.
Take any given time frame, let's say 15 years... look at any console platform within that frame, and look at the PC. Which, of all of them, is still being both consistently developed for, and can still run virtually all of its games from that period and through to this day? The PC, and only the PC. That is why Gabe is down on the consoles, because they limit the lifespan and developmental freedom by limiting the scope and life of the game to a brief span of the life of the console (primarily). The consoles development plan also doesn't allow for future-proofing through inclusion of scalable code that can go beyond current hardware limits, but will look great down the line.
Many developers feel this way. Gabe is simply in the unique position, based on his outstanding success, to be able to say these things with relative impunity. That makes him an outspoken asshole to many, and he is a loudmouth, but that doesn't necessarily mean he is wrong.
he is precisely the image of how a person would expect a nerd to look. pustuled face, relatively obese+multiple chins, very round glasses, same or similar hairstyle with a fake mullet and micheal moore facial expressions and overall lackidasical body movements. and just incase his looks could be deceiving, he makes up for it for actually being a nerd.
can i hate this guy anymore than i already do? not as much as he apparently hates ps3, 360, and vista, for very loose and lazy reasons.
@Lllusionx: How can people hate him. He pretty much singlehandedly improved PC gaming for.. well.. everyone. And his company makes brilliant games. And he knows what he's talking about.
I don't understand why some people dislike him.
Sure he talks trash about some things but he has very good reasons to.
@Spidery_Yoda: because the vast majority of gamers out there (i assume) are console only/primarily gamers, that would prefer those same awesome games on their own system. this person is nitpicking for reasons to not develop for consoles so he doesnt need to be taken away from the grocery store periodically.
@MrHappyMan: Actually, we all know that what he does, he does great. But seriously, I'd like to have him alive long enough to keep doing that great stuff. Do we really need another Chris Farley?
@Darkest Daze: Well, technically, Chris Farley died of a drug overdose. He basically put all the hard shit together in a big lumpy ball and said "Taking this is a REALLY good idea."
Steam has 16 million users and of the top 10 rated pc games on metacritic, 3 valve games in the top 5 with halflife 2 at the top. Gabe Newell is the founder of this company on a supposidly dead platform.
@Rompehamster: You know, I never really thought about it, but you're right. The man could have a heart condition he doesn't even know about. The last thing we want is for him to drop dead unexpectedly...especially before Episode 3 is finished!
Not that it's fine for him to drop dead afterwards..just...ya know, if he HAS to have a coronary, make it after Episode 3.
Oh great. As much as I like Valve, it feels like Gabe can't resist the temptation to act like a douche every time he gets a mouthpiece. A lot of the stuff he says in interviews just sounds snooty to me.
Yes he "knows" what he's talking about he complains or says something is garbage then he starts to make products on said garbage things (xbox 360, vista, ps3)
@MrHappyMan: I don't accept that. Scrapping the PS3 after it's already been released and doing it over is an utterly ridiculous idea, and you don't give advice like that unless you're either an idiot or an asshole. Gabe has proven through his accomplishments that he's not an idiot, so that's his inner asshole shining through.
@MrHappyMan: overall, they havent been in the running as long as sony or nintendo. nintendo was obviously first with other consoles it may have had and sony sorta took the industry by storm with it's playstation brand. said brand got them millions in the last 2 generations. theyre still undoubtably making millions this gen as well, which i find especially amazing since theyve managed to do that while also being more expensive, hard to develope for and juggling their games with their other sectors of developement. nintendo have been top dog for a long time. theyve lost that thunder last gen with the gamecube, but apparently, this gen, the wii has taken the world by storm(for some reason). but, IMO, gaming success is inevitable, especially since it is the only one of the 3 that is exclusively for gaming. then theres microsoft. they are a relatively stable business, lots of money, lots of people, lots of fans, lots of buyers, a lot of service in general, but to my knowledge, so far, they have maintained a second place status in both of the gens it was in. i doubt that they can do anything to stop the wii as it is now just like they couldsnt stop the ps2 last gen. even if devs find it easier to develope for one system over another doesnt as directly correlate to where they are status wise. to my knowledge, ps2 was that much more difficult to develop for than the xbox phat, and that still didnt hinder any developement for ps2 games whatsoever. do you not know who i am? i can spin this shit in any direction i please.
@Rompehamster: Yep, yep, and yep. Although, I do like Vista, but that's really only because of one thing: Start menu search. The rest of Vista's perks are crap that I really don't use. Well, the Favorite Links explorer menu is a nice touch, but it's not very well done and doesn't provide a consistent experience. Besides, IIRC, it wasn't so much Vista as a whole that Newell hated as it was DX10 being Vista exclusive. Which I agree with. (DX10 should have been made available for XP)
@MrHappyMan: Honsetly, I don't think that's because of the hardware. The PS1 and PS2 both beat the crap out of the competition because of one reason. They had a much, much, much larger library of games. The Saturn and the Dreamcast were both the more robust and powerful console, but the had a such a tiny library compared to the Playstaions. The PS3 is currently lagging behind the 360 by roughly 80+ more games.
It's like Sony decided to do a 180 from what made their previous console so popular. Instead of putting out a cheap system with a huge library, they put out an expensive system with a small library. Now the cheap system with the large library is winning. (360)
@stupid_mcgee: indeed, it's as if quality means nothing to our gaming consumers these days.... (wii is doing even better with a larger amount of cheap games and a relatively cheap system.
@homernoy: When you're the best at what you do it is understood that you can criticize those making your job moer difficult, which is all he's ever done.
Now, I've had PLENTY of issues with Valev-based games but at the end of the day this guy is at the top of his class and is entitled to speak his mind, whether or not he comes off as an "asshole" is merely people's perception.
Sure he's a fat angry nerd, but he's also a programming wizard, marketing genius, and highly skilled storyteller. Not that he's done it alone (Mr. Lombardi? for one) but he has become the face of Valve, for better or worse, and, unlike us here commenting in the wee ours, knows his shit backwards and forwards because he IS a huge part of the industry, and isn't just someone ranting about wasting $50-500 on some crappy/game/console.
And as far as his most famous quotes (and to the best of my knowledge):
PS3, and the cell especially, were total fuckups on Sony's part, and everyone knows it.
Vista does suck, for many reasons that are debatable EXCEPT no DirectX10 support- which is just plain bullshit.
All Xbox360 should have come with hard drives, the NXE hassle proves that, aside from many other devs complaining.
@WarToad: You're preaching to the converted my friend. I love Valve and have the highest regard for Gabe. Some of his comments though, have been a little harsh and when shown to the general public, they can make him seem like...........a prick.
Also, Vista SP1 does not suck! That's my opinion, and I am sticking to it.
@Maxyboy13: I doubt he's changed his mind on any of the statements he has made, and some of the issues he had against the PS3 (difficulty developing for) seem to be fairly accurate, though not so nice to hear. He also made negative comments about Vista, as well as the 360 not having a standard HDD and many others.
01/30/09
"Years ago when I said Xbox 360 was awful because it had no HDD support..."
and closing remarks...
"So in closing, fuck you PS3, you suck balls and I still hate you! PC, BEST PLATFORM OF THE FOREVARS!"

Beyond that face, he's unhealthy. So you can't be that much of a 'winner' when you're a prime candidate for a heart attack.
Jump off the johnson, sir.
01/30/09
So now we are just ignoring his points and attacking his appearence?
Ah, such bitterness.
The man is a winner, Valve is a winner and Gabe is correct in what he said.
I'm sorry if that upsets people but he is.
Let's move on.

he needs to put that money into some use and find a fitness trainer, the best that money can buy.

They are not in last place either and devs prefer working on that architecture, so Gabe is right anyway you want to spin it.

Being an asshole and being correct aren't mutually exclusive; you can be both.
(Given, being an ass means you'll be disliked...look at Socrates and, apparently, Mr. Newell here.)
