Jumpgate Evolution Demands Your Attention

NetDevil's Jumpgate evolution is a concept that sells itself. Massively multiplayer Wing Commander, anyone? How about some co-operative Privateer? It's a game that combines twitch-action space combat with levels and experience points. It's an excuse to dust off those old flight sticks. You'll even be able to play as a trader, paying more combat-ready players a cut of the action to make sure you make your deliveries safely. Space convoy!

It sounds amazing and looks rather lovely for a game with a scalable engine, allowing it to run on computers old and new, which is why every time I write about the game I'm surprised more people aren't aware of it. Hell, when I sat in with Codemasters' Lilit Baron last week at E3, he almost seemed pleasantly surprised that I had been keeping up with the game. Codemasters is gearing up to cure the rampant ignorance over Jumpgate Evolution, and the screenshots and accompanying Q&A, which you'll find after the jump, are just the beginning.

Jumpgate Evolution Launches Beta Sign-Ups

I've been craving a decent space MMO (that doesn't put me to sleep - sorry EVE) ever since the demise of EA's Bed Earth & Beyond, and right now all of my hopes rest on Codemasters and Netdevil's Jumpgate Evolution. A brand-new community website for the game has launched recently, and along with it comes the chance to sign-up to be a Jumpgate Evolution beta tester. Play a part in shaping the universe, help the team iron out bugs and balance the combat, and gain the ability to brag about playing the game in every Jumpgate post we put up from here to launch.

Just head over to www.jumpgateevolution.com and use your powers of deduction to determine where to go from there. Hope to see some of you in beta!

Jumpgate Evolution: The First Fifteen

How long do you play a game before you decide if you like it?

An hour, two, a day? Try 15 minutes.

The first fifteen is all the time a developer gets to convince a gamer that what they're playing is worth the price of admission, or so believes NetDevil's Scott Brown.

Following in the footsteps of the masters of the MMO, Blizzard, NetDevil is breaking away from the norm of game development for their latest pet project, Jumpgate: Evolution. Instead of trying to sketch out a complete world and then going back and filling in the details, giving the game its luster and heart in a soul-killing, deadline-pushing crunch, NetDevil is crafting their space flight massively multiplayer game one gleaming section at a time.

The team, which recently topped ten people, recently wrapped up their initial goal: Building out and polishing the game's first 15 minutes of play.

It may not sound like much, but in a year's time the team had to create the user interface, settle on the look of the game, and work out the games network and artificial intelligence.

They also had to give gamers a way to create their character, ships to fly, enemies to fight and places to go.

NetDevil Half-heartedly Pokes At April Fool's

I'd like to say I saved the best April Fool's Day post for last, but then I'd just be fooling myself. The bad news is, all Jumpgate Evolution and LEGO Universe developers NetDevil managed to pull together for this festive day was a logo swap accompanied by a brief announcement.

Today, NetDevil announces a new name change to NetAngel. This new company name establishes a clearer link to our commitment to make immersive and socially responsible massively multiplayer online games. This change takes effect on April 1st, 2008.
Bleh. The good news? All the time they didn't spend going the extra April Fool's Day mile is time spent honing LEGO Universe into the best LEGO MMO it can possibly be. Always look on the bright side, that's what I say.

Codemasters Connect Offers Shirow Armor, Jumpgate Beta Keys

Codemasters' Connect '08 event at the Omega Sektor in Birmingham England is coming March 14th and 15th, and they've lined up some truly amazing freebies for visitors to their MMO showcase. Probably the coolest item is for RF Online players. They've had Masamune Shirow of Ghost in the Shell fame create a suit of armor for every class in the game, and my god are they beautiful. The suit above is for a female Cora Warrior, and the rest are just as cool! Lord of the Rings Online players who attend will get a special in-game title for their character, while Archlord players will get some exclusive armor. All attendees will also get a Jumpgate Evolution pack complete with a beta key! I was invited to go myself, but seeing as I am moving on the 15th there's not a chance in hell...and I want some Shirow armor dammit! You go look at the pretty armor while I go cry.

Exclusive Armour set for every connect attendee! [RF Online Forums]

Codemasters' New MMO Is...Jumpgate?

Codemasters has finally pulled aside the velvet curtain that hid their mysterious new MMO from view, revealing NetDevil's Jumpgate Evolution, which obviously must be standing in front of Codemasters' awesome, all-new game, seeing as we've known about the new Jumpgate since June of last year, with NetDevil hinting at the new title as far back as December 2006. *peeks behind Jumpgate* Nope, that's it folks. I'd say that's an awfully crafty way to hide your brand new MMO, leaving it out in plain sight like that. Either way, Codemasters will be distributing the game throughout North America and Europe, with Codemasters Online handling the game's operation. Hit the jump for a press release that should have been titled "NetDevil Finds Publisher / European Partner For Jumpgate Evolution." More »

Jumpgate Evolution

I was impressed with Jumpgate Evolution back when NetDevil showed it off to me at the open house for their new offices, but somehoe I had completely forgotten about the hybrid space MMO, that was until they launched the website for the game yesterday. On the front page is this slick video. I happened to be talking to NetDevil's Scott Brown yesterday and it sounds like I might be able to check it out in the not too distant future. Color me antsy.

Jumpgate Evolution Launches Website Into Space

NetDevil is proud to announce the official launch of the website for Jumpgate Evolution, the sequel to their much loved but less played space-faring MMO, Jumpgate: The Reconstruction Initiative. The new site adds tons of media in the form of gameplay clips, wallpapers, and screenshots, as well as game news, forums, and the all-important beta sign-ups. They've even got a fansite kit available, in case you feel like creating your own Jumpgate Evolution web advertisement! Huzzah! Head over to www.jumpgateevolution.com for a look at the last best hope for Earth and Beyond players still clinging to the past, like me! More »

Jumpgate Evolution Screens

NetDevil just announced that beta registration is open on the new Jumpgate Evolution site, which also happens to contain a handful of new screens of the space-faring MMO. The sequel to NetDevil's first title Jumpgate: The Reconstruction Initiative may not have the instant appeal of their upcoming LEGO Universe, but it looks super sci-fi sexy. More »

LEGO MMO Details Tonight... Maybe

I'm off to NetDevil, driving up to Lousiville, near Boulder, to meet with the guys at their new studio tonight. Besides a chance to talk with the founders and the dev team leaders behind the LEGO MMO, Warmonger and Jumpgate, I believe they may also have some announcements and even some game assets to show off.
