The problem here is they are taking the idiotic prince of the Sands of Time sequels, where a relationship is composed by the amount of glib comments you can make. The prince in Sands of time however was one of the few game characters who develops; from spoiled brat to hero. Not to mention the subtle development of his relationship with farrah. I dont really care for the film either way Patrice Desilets was the genius behind Pop:SoT, and his next piece of genius is out in two weeks... #princeofpersia
So instead, there will be "consequences" for using the Dagger and there won't be sand monsters Jake Gyllenhaal fights to recharge it.Makes me wonder if they even really played the game before they made the movie. Wouldn't expendable charges of sand power you have to refill by killing enemies or else they respawn count as a consequence and incentive? I can live with them not having sand monsters, but the logic behind the prince becoming omnipotent because of the dagger has me confused. The way the dagger worked in the game was far from boring or super powerful. I distinctly remeber needing the time manipulating powers to pass certain rought points in the game and if you didn't have any charges left, I always got the "oh, well you kinda screwed the pooch here, should have saved some of those charges for this part" feeling.Whatever actor they used for the role of the Prince is really all that kills this movie for me just looking at the trailer as is.
First off:
1) the hell is with the british accent and non-persian look?
2) where is his big nasty sword and poofy white pants?
3) what the fuck is with that leather vest he has on in the begging of the trailer? Who wears that in a desert? "I'm sweating balls here in this leather, my shoulders and arms are sun burned and cancerous, but man I am so BADASS." #princeofpersia
@Manganese: it's a movie. they have an hour and a half. you can't fill that with random battles against monster or you'll lose the plot. he can't run out of sand the same way either because it would take time to show how he acts without sand and would again take more time to refill.
the british accent and non-persian look are due to it being a movie as well. they probably couldn't find a decent actor who also happened to be persian. it happens all the time. get over it.
and your two whines about the character design? those are ALWAYS changed in movies. it's about looking cool, not making sense. it's a damn movie. get over it, ffs. #princeofpersia
@Xelioth: Well as I said, I can understand the lack of sand monsters, and I really only mentioned the dagger running out of sand because of how Mechner was saying the prince would be omnipotent if they left the dagger as it was in the game. I just didn't understand the logic there, so I pointed out the game mechanics in fact had a consequence and incentive to use the dagger.
If it's supposed to be a movie adaptation then shouldn't the movie characters atleast somewhat resemble the game characters? I just thought the prince in the movie lacked authenticity or something....maybe saying he detracted from the atmosphere and theme of the movie is more accurate? Either way, being a movie based off video game, I think some part of the game should follow over into the movie besides the running, jumping and sandstorms. Atmosphere, themes and character development are all huge parts of what makes a game great or unique, the "it's a movie get over it" arguement is what prevents movie adaptations from being as great as their book or video game predecessors. Why should I trade logic/common sense for visual appeal or "coolness"? If I'm watching a movie, I'd much rather be immersed in the story/plot/dialogue and have everyone wearing plastic bedsheets, than spend the entire movie being unimpressed with "badass" visuals and an unengaging fictional universe. #princeofpersia
@Manganese: you're just being too picky, though. the atmosphere in that trailer is EXACTLY the atmosphere from the game. the game never felt like actual persia, it just felt sort of like bad ass aladdin.
character development is something you can't just based solely on what little we've seen in the trailer.
and how in god's name is the character design worse at all? it's damn near a carbon copy of the Warrior Within armor, ffs. [image.com.com]
"it's a movie" is only a bad argument when you're talking about big issues. what you're talking about is nit-picky little crap that makes no difference. #princeofpersia
I played thru the original Sands of Time a couple weeks ago. The only boss fight in the game is at the end when you fight the Vizier.
Also, I hope Ubisoft's "big announcement" is merely another PoP title and not a Street Fighter-esque "The Game based on the movie based on the game" fiasco.
As for the trailer, it's everything I was expecting from the Bruckheimer/Disney duo. Sure people will find things to bitch about (they always find things to bitch about), but it looks like the solid, summer blockbuster I was expecting it to be. I'm sure it won't win any Emmys, but it'll be more than watchable/enjoyable. #princeofpersia
@Dangsterr: You're about the only person who hated that visually and emotionally stunning game.
The last Prince of Persia stirred up sadness, fear, anger, and regret. No video game has ever made me laugh or cry as much as that game did. Sorry you're so pissed that you can't rewind time to see what an amazing game it was. #princeofpersia
@Whizkid103: Didn't seem all that great to me, after all the hype I picked it up, played for about 3 hours and put it down, haven't lifted it since, I guess I just didn't enjoy it, I don't hate the game like the other guy, I just got really bored. #princeofpersia
It actually has the potential to not totally suck ass.
I mean, look at Silent Hill. Sure, the ending was stupid, they destroyed some characters, but at least it stuck true to the game.
But I still still hate video games becomign movies. #princeofpersia
@Whizkid103: I hate it when games become movies also. This trailer didn't look too bad though. I will probably go see it in the theater mainly due to the big crazy action scenes. I just hope it isn't too similar to Pirates in its delivery etc., The first Pirates was good but the next 2? bleh #princeofpersia
That's what I think anyway...I really can't see Ubi making a top tier PoP sequel to last years gem AND another PoP for the movie in the same year unless its a LIVE Arcade release.....or PSN. #princeofpersia
This has the potential to be the first ever plausible game movie with Jerry Bruckheimer and Mike Newell behind the project. The story of SoT is already epic so let's be hopeful. #princeofpersia
@GCLonginus: This could be the best game film since Silent Hill and Mortal Kombat. I'm not saying those were masterpieces or anything but they were the better game films.
I'm hoping this turns out relatively well. And I'm probably not going to go see it at the 2012 screening. To be honest, that whole Mayan calendar thing kinda freaks me out ... #princeofpersia
@GrimesFace: Don't let it freak you out. They couldn't even prophesy their own demise. The Bible is a better source of prophecy. Heck, Nostradamus even.
"Be honest – how many of you are going to go see the film 2012 just so you can watch the Prince of Persia trailer on the big screen? "
:| I went to see a corny Vietnamese movie with my cousin to see the Avatar trailer... only to notice it was the M. Night Avatar, not the James Cameron Avatar. I mean, I liked the cartoon, but... it's M. Night. I guess I'll peep 2012, or wait for the PoP trailer to leak online. #princeofpersia
