@TheIrishNinja: I just bought an elite on December 27th from Wal-Mart and it has the Jasper chipset. I think they went into production around August 2008 and hit retail around October? maybe? Either way, it should be easy to get one with Jasper now.
So is it weird that I've got a working launch day 360? I've run mine for at least a thousand hours over the last 3 years (200 so far on Bethesda RPGs alone, I shudder to think how much more just on COD4) and it's still going strong.
It's a hearty beast, although that might have something to do with the power supply being connected to a UPS/power conditioner, and the entire system being well-ventilated.
With all the talk about RROD's though, I'm starting to feel like it should be in a museum somewhere. "BEHOLD! THE LAST WORKING LAUNCH DAY PREMIUM 360!"
@Chip Johnson: You seem to be fortunate then. My roommate has been playing his own machine (which he bought pre-owned) for well over a year now without any RROD (knock on wood).
@Chip Johnson: @seo_ace: I'm actually doing my dev work right now without the Creators' Club membership. When get closer to publishing, I'll buy the membership... gotta maximize that year's worth of membership :)
My 360 is working fine as of today - but for the future I might pick up a jasper. Does anyone if they actually ARE more reliable. Because so far from what I know they are supposed to be. But is it true?
So true. I'd love to have one of these things and play on XBL, but every new 360 seems to be the one that solves the RROD issue... until they start showing it too. Remember all the hype about Elites?
I just can't trust them until I've seen them run for a few years, and by then, they'll probably be obsolete by now.
The shop i work in has had 3 jasper chip sets back since Christmas. All with RROD. This problem is far from over. I won't be purchasing the jasper xbox and certainly won't be purchasing the successor to the 360. I've been burnt 6 times with the RROD.
@GOD: That sounds like some seriously bad news. I wonder if anyone is tracking this... I plan to order mine next pay cycle. This will hopefully give me a chance to look into these claims :3
@okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under): Microsoft are in a catch 22 situation. Not many new adopters know about the 3 year warranty, and yet they don't want to bring attention to the reasoning behind this extended warranty. I have seen many instances where customers have purchased multiple consoles when they got the RROD after 12 months. Assuming that they were not covered.

@Frequen-Z: The surest sign that one is a latent homosexual is that they refer to eveything as "gay." Either that or they are twelve years old. Which are you? Gay? Or only twelve years old?
Amazon seems to have been shipping Jasper Arcades for a month now. At least in the CA/AZ region (shipped from Phoenix). I got two weeks ago from them with a 11-11-2008 date (12.1A). I still need to plug it in. It's going to be my dedicated XNA development unit.
@CockroachMan: Only time will tell but as it's using over 100W less power, and it has a redesigned CPU and GPU, I'm going to say that it's probably the best guarantee you can get.
Also, I believe (I haven't verified this) that it's still covered by the same three-year warranty.
Anybody know if you can explicitly request a Jasper model when sending in your brick to the repair center? My current 360 works fine, but when it does kick it, I don't want the next one to have one of the older chips.
@ShaggE: I don't know, although knowing Microsoft, I'm inclined to doubt it. When my old-school launch Xenon red-ringed, I was sent a replacement Xenon (presumably because they couldn't fix it; different serial #) despite the Falcons having been in the wild and on store shelves for quite some time.
A buddy of mine has been through four 360s (various errors, typically RRoD or disc read error). He finally said "Fuck it!" and went out and bought a brand new Jasper. They are indeed nice; ranging from a power supply brick that is half the size of my Xenon's to not whirring up like a turbine when loading a disc.
You would think that they would allow for it. You know, so they won't have to keep footing the bill for replacing faulty units with more faulty units!
@Ad-hominem: Figures. After my current refurb came physically dirty and obviously 2006 era, I was hoping I could have a little say in the matter next time.
Especially since it was OOW and I had to pay the hefty replacement fee... *grumble grumble*
@NinjaBurg3r: If you have a Xenon motherboard (no HDMI) then you will be sent either a Xenon or an Opus (which is more likely because of the die shrink) replacement.
MS will not give you an HDMI motherboard replacement unless the unit you shipped in had HDMI.
@Boxelder: I hate to admit it, but you're right. It's hard to give up on the games we can't replace on the PS3, so if we can't afford to buy and upkeep both consoles, we're kind of stuck.
It's a catch-22. I hate having to pray every time I turn on my console or play it for more than two or three hours at a time, but on the other hand, I'm not going to give up the Dead Risings, Crackdowns, and Mass Effects of the game library.
I doubt it. When your console RRoDs, you only send in the console. You keep your HDD, and more importantly, your power brick.
The newer models have smaller, more efficient chips, and thus use less power than what is provided by your current power brick. So unless MS sends you a new brick, or asks for you to pack your current one into its cardboard coffin, I'm almost certain you won't get a Falcon or Jasper back.
@McDollar: I'm snagging one because mine is from 2005 (launch) and even though I don't have any problems with it, I'm not waiting around... built-in HDMI isn't bad either.
@McDung: I have a launch 360 and a Zephyr, and neither of them have RRoDd. Here's an idea, take it out of your entertainment center, stand it up, and turn it off when you're done. Seems like common sense to me. But then again we know how dumb many Americans are...
@VideoGameFan: Yes, babying a console because it was poorly designed is common sense. Do you hug and kiss your consoles every night also? Just because you haven't had either of yours RRoD doesn't mean it won't happen. And what's with the derogatory comment? Was that really necessary?
@Bokusatsu_Tenshi: i really think it is. the reason we have an entertainment center is so that we don't need to see all of the components and crap. disconnecting and reconnecting it constantly seems irritating. although turning it off seems common sense. @VideoGameFan: really with the stupid american comment?
@saulpimpson: Entertainment centers are designed for looks, not electronics ventilation. You are setting your machines inside a box with little airflow. Would you put your computer in there and expect it to be fine?

Not if the evidence on the back of my machine says so. Mfr date is March, and it's rated at 12V

We've had how many revisions of the 360, each one supposedly being "THE END" of RROD, and each one only marginally improving the failure rate.
There's a word for someone who continuously buys a defective product. Lemming.

At least be true to yourself and admit that you're annoyed as hell over the RROD. No-one else will be thinking any less of you.
