New Tony Hawk Game To Employ Motion-Controlled Peripheral?

More from the "marketing leaks". And more Activision stuff. There are several listings on the site for what is probably the next "current-gen" Tony Hawk title, which has three working titles: Amplitude, Adrenaline and, awesomely, Tony Hawk's Huck Jam. The game is slated to appear on 360, PS3 and PC, and will make use of motion controls via a custom board controller/peripheral (maybe this one?). Great, more hunks of plastic for the living room floor! Can't wait.

Monster Jam Hits The Streets

Sunday SUNday SUNDAY! Activision is once again pulling the monster trucks out of their ridiculously huge garages, setting them free not only in stadium environments but into streets all over the world with Monster Jam: Urban Assault for the PlayStation 2, PSP, Nintendo Wii and DS. Along with the standard stadium events and a handful of new mini-games, players will be able to drive their monster trucks through various cityscapes, causing havok in the process.

"What would Monster Jam fans do if they could unleash the raw power of the world’s biggest and baddest monster trucks in an urban setting, however they liked? Monster Jam: Urban Assault is our attempt to answer this question,” said Dave Oxford, Activision Publishing. “We are confident Monster Jam fans and all gamers will enjoy doing things like crushing a NYC cab or smashing through one of London’s famous double-decker buses.”

You know what scares me? The fact that this sounds like an incredibly awesome idea. Hit the jump for more details while I try to stave off my natural Georgia-resident impulses.

The finals will be held in Woodward, Pennsylvania in August.

Participants have at each stop have a chance to win a Playstation prize package that includes a PSP and some games as well as some clothes and an expense-paid, week-long stay at Woodward Camp, where they will compete in the finals. Winners at the finals will receive $5,000, a free summer at Woodward Camp, a Playstation 3 and a Playstation prize pack.

"PlayStation is committed to strong youth brands and action sports programs that offer kids access to fun, supportive and collaborative environments," said Ginger Kraus, director of promotions at SCEA. flOw Team Shows Off Its 24 Hour PS3 Game

thatgamecompany, the team behind flOw and the upcoming Flower, isn't on board with the folks who moan about dreadful PlayStation 3 development. They're knocking out PS3 games in a 24 hour period these days, an exercise they're calling Game Jam as conceived by lead engineer John Edwards. This is how the kids let off some steam, apparently, throwing together a zombie-filled multiplayer shoot-fest with the crudest of the crude graphics. The gameplay, as described by tcg's Kellee Santiago, sounds pretty boss, but it's the Altered Beast sound bites that really warm my heart. Cool concept, one we hope becomes a retail product, despite Santiago's hints otherwise.

Charles Barkley Post Apocalyptic Trailer, So Cool

Finally! Here's the official trailer for GOTY shoo-in Barkley Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden. The RPG is set in 2041 in a post apocalyptic future where basketball is outlawed and ballers are outlaws. It doesn't matter if ex-NBA hoopster would be around 78 then. This trailer is all kinds of awesome!

Thanks, 108!

Microsoft Snaps Up EA Chicago GM To Head Gears Of War Project

When Electronic Arts shuttered its Chicago-based development studio, the one responsible for titles like Fight Night and Def Jam Icon, EA prez Frank Gibeau chalked it up to an inability to meet standards for "responsibility for product quality, ship dates and profitability." Tough words, especially when some of that blame was most likely shouldered by former general manager of the studio, Kudo Tsunoda. Fortunately for Tsunoda, he has a new home, with GameTap reporting today that he's landed at Microsoft.

Tsunoda, best known for his fighting games, including a licensed Marvel Comics brawler that may have been scrapped, has been supposedly put to work on a popular franchise. A new Gears of War title is said to be his first project. An interesting fit. And by interesting, I mean, you better not screw this up, Kudo, or you're in big trouble. Oh, and congratulations.

EA Confirms EA Chicago is Closing

EA Chicago has gone down for the count. I can exclusively report that EA is closing the studio effective immediately. Word is that EA is working hard to place many of the 150+ employees at its other studios around the world. What does this mean for the future of the Def Jam fighting franchise and the forthcoming Marvel fighting game? I'm still looking into that, but it sure seems like those games won't be coming anytime soon.

A source has also leaked me with the surprisingly honest memo sent to EA employees from Frank Gibeau, President of EA Games. In it he says:

"Within the EA Games Label, we are committed to running each franchise and facility as a city/state, teams with unique creative identities as well as responsibility for product quality, ship dates and profitability....Unfortunately, EA Chicago hasn't been able to meet that standard....Closing EA Chicago is the toughest decision I've made in my career - one that in no way reflects on the talent and dedication of the people who work there."

This was no doubt an extremely difficult decision for EA. I was at the Chicago studio this summer to tape an episode of Game Head on the new Marvel fighting game and it was a beautiful facility with very talented developers.

Konami Code Unlocks Hidden Jam Sessions Songs

Some things just never go out of style. Hidden tracks on Ubisoft's Jam Sessions, previously only available through purchase of the game at Best Buy, are actually unlockable on any version using a truncated version of the good old Konami code. Pushing in Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, and Right during Free mode will net you three new songs: More »

Week in Games: Heavenly Sword Edition

This week has a nice choice of titles spread out over various systems (sans the PSP). I'm trying to get to Heavenly Sword tonight so I can see for myself what it's going to be like and I am anxious to check out Jam Sessions and Drawn to Life for the DS. I've avoided Oblivion for a while just because I'm afraid of getting sucked in, but the inclusion of all the expansions on one disc is intriguing. What to do, what to do?

Heavenly Sword (PS3)
Will Nariko and her moves rival Kratos?

Skate (X360)
Skate to your heart's content and see what life is like without Tony Hawk.

NHL 2K8 (PS3, X360, PS2)
All the fun of Hockey without the broken teeth.

NHL 08 (X360, PS3, PC, PS2)
Because we always need more hockey games.

Galactic Assault: Prisoner of Power (PC)
Rule the planets in this sci-fi RTS.

.hack//G.U. vol. 3//Redemption (PS2)
The final game in the trilogy. The end of an era...

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Game of the Year Edition (X360, PC)
All of Oblivion including the two expansions in one tidy package.

Kengo: Legend of the 9 (X360)
You are a legendary samurai in feudal Japan doing the stuff a samurai does.

DiRT (PS3)
More racing action for your PS3.

Jam Sessions (DS)
Strum your blues away.

Drawn to Life (DS)
Draw your own character and put him through his paces.

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core (WII, PS2)
Still guilty after all these years.

Fatal Inertia (X360)
Race in supersonic planes and kick some ass.

Ship Simulator 2008 (PC)
Imagine the fun of piloting your own oil rig!

Jam Session Trailer

Tired of the colored button tapping of Guitar Hero and want to take your video game music playing to the next level? The Jam Sessions may be for you (if you have a DS). Instead of playing a predefined set of notes, Jam Sessions lets you pick and choose what chords and notes you want to play, thus creating you're own rockin' tunes.

This trailer is really less a trailer and a bit more like a gentle, quiet prodding from the games producer, Carlo Delallana, to get you to check out the game. It actually looks like a lot of fun and sounds pretty relaistic, but do yourself a favor: stock up on screen protectors.

Hannah Montana Wins MTV Over

MTV's Stephen Totilo is a sharp guy, in fact I'd probably say he's one of the best game journalists around, right up there with the likes of N'Gai Croal and Seth Schiesel, so when he says a game is good, yes even a game about Hannah Montana, you gotta believe.

One of the causalities of our hectic schedule and E3's insane lay out was our appointment with Disney Interactive, which I wasn't too happy about because it meant we missed out on Turok. But it also meant, apparently we missed out on one of the great secrets of the show: Hannah Montana: Music Jam. I'll let Totilo explain.

More Jam Sessions Impressions, Screens

As revealed at GDC, Ubisoft is bringing the Nintendo DS guitar non-game Hiite Utaeru DS Guitar M-06 to the West as Jam Sessions, adding a unique guitar playing touchscreen tapper to the list of the system's unique software. What Are You Playing This Weekend?

In a week already rich with videogaming (and writing about videogaming), it makes this associate editor pine for a day off from the digital escapism. We've already played a full workweek's worth of The Godfather Blackhand Edition, we spent hours at the local watering hole playing Guitar Hero II on stage, and last night saw our monthly social gaming event, Geek Night, take place in Culver City. What Are You Playing This Weekend?

I've got a full weekend planned, including hitting the Sunset Boulevard Nursery for some flower shopping (no, really) and maybe some hard Hollywood partying, but what's really got my schedule packed are the games. The ridiculous amount of games! Being away at GDC and on vacation for half the month of March, which saw some considerable releases, means I've got some catching up to do. More »
