Ghosts 'N Goblins came out over the weekend. Who keeps signing these cheques?

R-Type, which is being ported by DotEmu, will be out "sometime in the next few months", while Ghosts N' Goblins was released in Japan on Sunday. So...take two games requiring fast, precise controls, then port them to a system capable of neither. What a great idea.

<![CDATA[Atlus Trots Out Steambot Chronicles Battle Tournament]]> Atlus brings more Steambot to the PSP this summer, announcing a North American release for Irem's Steambot Chronicles Battle Tournament.

Released in Japan as Steambot Chronicles: Vehicle Battle Tournament, the new PSP title places players behind the controls of a Trotmobile mech, as a young gladiator looking to make a name for himself. Pick your missions, upgrade your parts, and battle other players in 4-player Ad Hoc wireless battles, complete with game sharing for those whose friends are too cheap to get their own.

Perhaps due to the recent string of delays, Atlus has announced a much more reasonable release window of later this summer for Steambot Chronicles Battle Tournament, rather than announcing the exact date and then pushing it back at the last possible moment.

<![CDATA[Irem Does Its Best To Sex Up Spelunker]]> Minna de Spelunker is coming to the PlayStation 3 in Japan. How does one generate interest in a high-def Spelunker remake? Put women in short outfits! Short Spelunker outfits!

It's a pretty easy formula, one that publisher Irem capitalized upon when opening up the "Spelunker Lounge" this past week to Spelunker-crazed Japanese journalists. Simply take an existing character and, regardless of the gender of the main character(s), redesign that character's outfit with minimal leg coverage. Then stand near the playable version of the game being promoted.

Oh! And bring booze!

We'll bet that Spelunker wine tastes delicious. Probably more enjoyable than our hands-on time with the PlayStation Network game at Tokyo Game Show, anyway.

<![CDATA[Atlus Unleashes Hammerin' Hero On PSP]]> Atlus once again takes care of its fans first with an exclusive reveal of their upcoming PSP title Hammerin' Hero delivered directly to their Atlus Faithful community.

Rather than try to piece through the scattered description of the Irem-developed game delivered to my inbox as via the mailing list, I instead give you the much more concise description from the YouTube version of the official trailer, which I've also conveniently posted below.

Gen-san hammers away at corporate evil across Japan and the world in this vibrant, action-based comic adventure that unfolds fully voiced in English and Japanese languages! Choose from a variety of jobs, including sushi chef, baseball player, and diver, to give Gen different costumes and attacks as he fights through 12 crazy stages. Along the way, make allies in battle, collect loads of items, and even unlock two more playable characters!

Meanwhile, back in the email, Atlus also mentions that the game will support two-player via ad hoc wireless, so you can pummel things into oblivion with a friend at your side.

The game is due out March 3rd for the PSP. Hit up the link below for more info!

<![CDATA[R-Type Dimensions Screens A Force To Be Reckoned With]]> Who knew that the Xbox 360 would become *the* place to get one's shmup fix? With R-Type Dimensions coming to the Xbox 360, recreating R-Type and R-Type II in Xbox Live Arcade form, Microsoft has secured nearly every important shmupping franchise, already having nabbed Ikaruga, DoDonPachi, Raiden IV and 1942. OK, that's not every important franchise, but it's a pretty good collection and it has Cave on its side.

R-Type Dimensions may have a bit of a tacked on gimmick with its "crazy camera" but we're still looking forward to tackling it on XBLA soon.

<![CDATA[R-Type Coming To Xbox Live Arcade]]> The Bydo empire must be destroyed. Again. The Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification has rated a new title in the series, named R-Type Dimensions, for an upcoming Xbox Live Arcade release. The surprise announcement, dug up by GamerBytes, shows that Microsoft will publish, but that developer Tozai will handle all the coding wizardry.

Unfortunately, there's little else in the way of concrete info for R-Type Dimensions, such as whether it will be a totally new entry in the series or a HD remake of a previous entry. Whatever the outcome, we don't care. It's R-Type!

<![CDATA[R-Type Command's Sweet Preorder R-9A]]> R-Type Command, Irem's tactical hybrid shooter for the PSP, is due in stores next week, and in case tactical space shooter action doesn't quite grab you, publisher Atlus has sweetened the pot with this kick ass model of the R-Type R-9A Arrowhead in tasteful black and red. GameStop, Amazon.com, GameCrazy, EB Canada will all be offering the model, which originally saw life as a gashapon toy in Japan, and then offered in different colors as part of Yujin's Shooting Game Historica collection (still available here), it's an excellent way to show your love for all things R-Type...along with, you know...buying the game itself.

<![CDATA[R-Types Rated For PlayStation Network Re-release....]]> R-Types Rated For PlayStation Network Re-release. You're certainly not going to be lacking in the various ways to play R-Type soon, as the ESRB has rated R-Types (again) for the PlayStation 3 and PSP, meaning that a PlayStation Store release is likely, if not imminent. The PS One "classic" was originally released by Irem in 1999, collecting both R-Type and R-Type II, a pair of extremely challenging arcade side-scrolling shmups. More please! *cough* Thunder Force V *cough*

<![CDATA[R-Type Tactics Coming Stateside?]]> According to a historically reliable NeoGAF member, one who has access to Gamestop's list of upcoming software releases, Irem's R-Type Tactics is coming to North America courtesy of publisher Atlus. Rebranded R-Type Command, the game is said to be scheduled for a March 4, 2008 release date at an MSRP of $39.99. The game eschews the lightning fast reflexes needed to avoid enemy fire from Bido adversaries, instead offering up turn-based, hex-based strategic gameplay. You won't control just one ship, but a fleet of space craft.

We're waiting to hear back from Atlus on the matter to see if this rumor turns out to be true.

<![CDATA[Bumpy Trot 2 Trots 2 PS3 At TGS]]> NeoGAF member "Massive Attack" used his falcon-like web site watching skills to dig up a tidbit of PLAYSTATION 3 news for next week's Tokyo Game Show. It appears that R-Type developer Irem will be showing a sequel to the original Bumpy Trot for Sony's next-gen console at the Makuhari Messe. While the original Western mech game, which came to the U.S. of A as Steambot Chronicles, didn't exactly light up the sales charts, it was fairly well received.

Don't count on a European or North American release just yet, but we'll hopefully get our hands on it in Tokyo next week.

<![CDATA[R-Type Tactics Site Goes Live]]> Irem has pushed the R-Type Tactics web site live, giving shooter and strategy fans some sweet direct feed screenshots to obsess over until the game is finally released. Speaking of a release, the R-Type Tactics site lists a vague 2007 release for the PSP game and a price point of 5040 yen but offers little else in the way of solid gameplay details for non-Japanese speakers.

Profiles on the game's ships—including a look at the Bydo faction spacecraft—and storyline are also up, but don't get too excited unless you're armed with serious kanji knowledge.

<![CDATA[R-Type Tactics... R-Type. Tactics.]]> Looks like Irem wasn't kidding when it titled R-Type Final, the supposed final shoot 'em up in the long running, hard-as-hell sidescrolling series. Yes, details are scarce, but from what we can gather by these awful, awful scans from the latest Famitsu, R-Type is ditching twitch gameplay for a more chin-rubbingly strategic bent. Hex-based, turn-based and awesome-based, R-Type Tactics looks like a crazy cross-genre shooter that's just crazy enough to work.

I promise, I'll be watching like a hawk for any and all updates on R-Type Tactics. Keep your eyes peeled for news and the inevitable online campaign for a North American release.

Scan via The Next Level Forums. Thanks, Chris!
