In reply to House Sets Up House On The iPhone
Gah, my RSS feed did not carry over the strikeout text and it looked for a moment like both fist-shaking extremes of the political spectrum had merged into one engorged Hutt from which position it could better divide a society burbling at the mouth with ideological foam and coax us eventually into a mutual destruction the likes of which hasn't been seen since Bart started walking toward Lisa punching forward and Lisa started walking toward Bart lashing out with her feet and everyone got the ass-kicking they deserved.

But there's strikeout text, so apparently we're okay for the time being.

If this were anything like the actual House series these days, it would be more like a poorly done relationship sim. *rolleyes*

Say, House uses a GBA SP initially, then a DS, then switches to a PSP. Did he change his handheld again?

@TetsuBo: You did, as did I... I was stoked but it got me thinking... When the little boy gave him a PSP (2000?) a few seasons ago, it was a really big deal and the PSP was featured throughout the episode...I saw this as pretty blatent product placement but it worked great with the story...

Now with the PSPGo, it was there but not every shown... If sony was paying for product placement, they got screwed this round...If Hugh Laurie actually likes PSP's then its cool he brought it on set... Wonder what the truth is...

Though 16GB probably fails in comparison to Fox Mulder's collection of pre-Internet porn.

What if there are bugs in this game? The obvious solution is to find out the binary sequence of the bug and programme another bug with the exact opposite binary sequence.

Then we zap the iPhone with a few thousand volts. If and when this works depends on how many minutes we have left (in the show).

In reply to Dragon's Lair Heading for the iPhone
I always liked Braindead 13. I have it and Dragon's Lair for PC, but BD13 would actually give you auditory feedback, so instead of just hopelessly guessing and hoping you'd hit the queue for an event, you would pick an action for the hero and mash it until the game registered your choice. It would sound kind of like "bong-bong-bong-bong-bongbongbong-bong-bong-bong-bong-bong-bong-bong-bong-bong-bong-*ping!*" and then you could stop pressing things until the next scene.

I remember playing Dragon's Lair as a kid, and basically thinking "ok, so is this a case where he can go left? C'mon left! leftleftleftleftleftleftleftle...! *dies* Ok, so was left the wrong choice or did I just miss the 10 msec window where you can actually enter a command? Maybe that last scene wasn't interactive and I was already dead?

@plasticmouse: For a simple effect of pointing a TV into a curved mirror and using black backgrounds, the 3D effect worked pretty well. This game was also really responsive compared to Dragon's Lair, but then so was anything under the sun.

The arcade cabinets had an issue where the (Sony?) laserdisc player inside them would wear out/break, and so there was actually a non-video-based fighting game that you could get as a conversion kit from Sega to salvage the machines with a damaged laserdisc unit.

Ah Dragons Lair. The ultimate game of trial and error. I used to literally write down the actions I had worked out so far, as I was going along. It didn't work too well though it must be said. Damn was that game harsh!

But for some unfathomable reason, I and many others like me still look back on it with fond memories!

I had a seriously love / hate relationship with this game on the SNES. I liked the art style and the hardcore-ness of the game, and couldn't stop playing it. But the difficulty stressed me the f**k out. Playing this on the go on an iPhone would make me wanna swing for somebody and cuss bad words in public (more than I already do!)

I've never played this game. It always looked like a 'pick your own adventure' sort of thing and not much of a game. Maybe I'm mistaken, but it never really struck me as something I'd enjoy too much.

@Friedhamster: Actually, these Laserdisc games were not quite pick your own adventure..

You watch the screen, and once in a while one or more buttons/sides of the screen will flash. You press the button corresponding to your choice.

Doing nothing usually gets you killed. Doing the wrong thing usually gets you killed. A real quarter-gobbler.

@Koztah: Huh, so it's kind of like an interactive movie? Once you know all the right choices you can just win with a single quarter though I assume right? Or is there some random element?

@Friedhamster: It's not even that really.

You don't pick anything, it's a reaction/memory game, area of screen flashes, press direction/button that corresponds.

It was laserdisc games such as this that were pretty much the precursor to what we now tend to call quick-time events, although that term came much, much later with Shenmue.

@Friedhamster: Interactive Movie was exactly what they were called at the time, and once memorised, yes, you could do it on one quarter. Probably blindfolded.

Although Dragons Lair didn't have random elements, I believe it's follow-up, Space Ace, would play it's scenes in a random order... But once you knew them, it was the same deal.

@Mentuss: I'll just throw out that I think both games would actually flip the playback (on the vertical axis) of certain game segments. I know Space Ace did this for a fact, and I think Dragon's Lair did too. So although you might memorize the sequence, a subsequent playthrough could have some scenes flipped. Not much of a randomization, but there you go.

As far as gameplay, I remember enjoying both games quite a bit when I was younger. But then again, I was always into animation, and really, that's what these were - animated short films presented in a game format. I bought Space Ace for the iPhone, and have enjoyed it a lot. If this comes in at $4.99, I'll buy it as well.

@Lemming: @Bucket_deux: I'm pretty sure the original Dragons Lair was linear with no random elements, as the introduction of them was a selling point to Space Ace.

They probably appeared in Dragons Lair II though.

Saying that... I might be wrong. I'm certainly no expert in Dragons Lair.

Great games to watch, not so great to play, and when you're a kid in the mid-eighties, and you've got the choice of dying in seconds playing Dragons Lair, or playing the Enduro Racer cab next to it with the sit-on dirt bike controller that pops wheelies, I'm sure you can guess what I picked to spend my money on.
