My Wii was blinking blue at me today and I downloaded it. Works good.
I hadn't bought it just on general principles -- I wasn't going to hassle with buying points, plus why should I have to pay just b/c I couldn't get a Wii for months after they came out?
So yay Nintendo for making it free and for offering something to the people who did pay for it.
This isn't some fanboy hating either. It's kinda sad when a browser chokes on the gawker network blogs, and the version of flash is so archaic that the videos on Nintendo's site don't load properly.
You should do some research on why it's so "bad." Adobe only allows certain versions of Flash for devices. The Internet Channel was limited to Flash 7, but this update adds Flash Lite 3 (Flash 8 equivalent). Many more Flash things should work better.
As for gawker sites...have you seen the code for those pages? It's a big, heavy, jumbled mess, I tell ya.
Hopefully, the Internet Channel got updated to the same backend as Opera 10, which conincidentally got released today. It should run faster and more compatible with more sites. Maybe even gawker stuff!
Hey! Listen! I got an email from Nintendo saying that they've updated the Flash in the Internet Channel. So even if you already have the Internet Channel, download it again so you can enjoy Flash 9 goodness!
Also, the promotion for a free NES game begins at the end of October. Details will be sent out through the Wii Message Board. The one important detail is that it is only available for those who actually played for the Internet Channel.

@Kokorazashi: Let me get this straight. SuperTongue says "can I get a free NES game" and you reply with "Why when I've got a WAD loader?"
I mean, who the fuck cares if you have a WAD loader. How does that affect anyone else in the world and their ability or inability to get a free game from Nintendo?
@dowingba: Maybe Kokorazashi assumed SuperTongue "beat the system" by using a WAD loader as well. And then he replied with what is basically "why bother when you can already get anything else free."
Maybe you should be less defensive.
@CHunterX: Yes. He probably assumed everyone has a WAD loader. That sounds about right.
I couldn't be that it's just yet another "I'm superior because I use an emulator" post that shows up in every single Nintendo article on the entire internet since the release of the Wii.
It is merely my assertion that, we've all used fucking emulators before. It's nothing new. You aren't special.

So do we still get the free game if we downloaded the browser for free when it was free a long time ago?
I never use the browser(glad I didn't have to pay for it), but I wouldn't mind a free nes game. ;-p
@kubevubin: Exactly what he said. I just did a search on it myself trying to figure out how it works but found this instead "The company also announced plans to reimburse those who previously paid for the service with a free NES title to be launched in late October via the Wii’s Virtual Console." on [www.edge-online.com] Too bad I was trying to pick out 3 games T_T
Hey Bash, the channel was free in the beggining. I downloaded it for free in 2007 and I still have it. Then, they started charging it. Good move Nintendo. AWesome for those who never downloaded the browser, bad for those who payed for it. I didn´t pay for it back in the day, but it is a cool add-on to watch youtube videos. I like it!
@Lucasreis: Those who paid for it (actually possible anybody) get what sounds like one free VC game. So depending on how that plays out it's a pretty good deal.
what? i thought it was free… i certainly never payed anything for it [back when i used the Wii at all…]
But i dont see why they would give you three games to compensate 500 points.
is that a mistake? If not, it would have been a good idea to buy the channel just to recieve three games in return…
@Accordion: It was free in Beta. Then anyone who got the Beta was upgraded for Free. I think it's final release was also free for about 3 months before they started charging. Pretty much anyone who had a Wii early got it for free.
@Fatty Shcock: I remember i used to go to Browser based arcade sites (i think one was like WiiCade or something like) The Wii Remote is just used as a mouse pointer basically.
Shame the browser is slow, clunky, and to be honest... just bad.
@Fatty Shcock: Flash tends to keep a page from loading properly. Too many images... same thing. There were months after my PC died when all I had was the Wii to surf the web. It was... not convenient.
@Kougeru: Each have theirs pros and cons. The PS3 browser doesn't get memory errors as often. And the PS3 browser can see more up-to-date flash stuff (unless they've updated the Wii browser). The PS3 flash support has some really screwy audio-visual sync problems though, whereas the Wii doesn't.

I f'n hate Flash anyway, so whatevs.
Nintendo site looked okay, CNN was okay. Didn't even try anything Gawker-related as they sometimes don't load right on my PC with Firefox.
The only thing I hated about it is no Adblock available. Man, there are way too many ads online everywhere.
