Looks good so far in terms of the interface, icons, and such. Playing WoW, it's amazing how many players there had never touched Warcraft 3 so they never knew any lore, and similarly many players hadn't played Diablo/D2/D2: LoD. But D2 and LoD heavily influenced what Blizzard did with WoW, now they're taking their own ideas from WoW and adding it to D3. The skill icons in WoW were a legitimate improvement so that's a welcome change I guess. Hard to say till we get to play in ~2-5 years.
As long as it doesn't just feel like WoW all over, it's fine. Diablo has to retain some sense of identity that's unique, at least I hope so...
Also, I'd make a blanket statement about gamers who enjoyed the Diablo series before the announcement of Diablo 3, but there doesn't seem to be any room on that bandwagon. :(
Actually I liked the classlessness in Diablo 1 - I played a rogue, but I knew how to cast town portal so I never used scrolls (And mana shield, chain lightning, fire bolt... elemental, guardian, and so on.) I carried 90% mana potions 10% hp since I always had mana shield on...
I'm not hating on the new (Diablo 2? NEW? haha) way of doing things, but it was fun just reading any books I found and making a wickedly powerful rogue-mage.
Noooooo, I like Diablo-II-style inventory systems! It appeases the OCD inside me when I sit around for 5 minutes reorganizing everything so it all fits!
I get where the outcries are coming from but give the guy a break. I mean if they did the same thing just with shinier graphics people would definitely complain abou Diablo not "innovating" or whatever with the times.
I know I want the inventory issues I had before resolved. Let's give it a look see what they can do first and then bitch about it! It's not like they can't patch it or anything.
Diablo is the only PC game I would consider upgrading my dinosaur PC for.
@excaliburps: They're still not innovating. They're just taking cues from another one of their games, instead of going in a completely different direction.
@MonsterKingRen: They are doing something. Especially considering they could've just released a new one with a fresh coat of paint and it would still have sold bajillions because of the Diablo name...
Not every game/genre needs to innovate. Sometimes tweaking the bells and whistles and whatnot can and might do the job.
We'll never know unless we actually play it I suppose.
I find Blizzard becoming less and less relevent these days. They've stopped innovating (both in storytelling and game mechanics) and it takes forever for anything to get released.
@HeyApples: You haven't been following Blizzard very long, have you?
(Hint: They have ALWAYS TAKEN FOREVER. and by the way--I hate to tell you this, but here's the relevant games list starting, honestly, with the games people love Blizzard for.
Blackthrone
Lost Vikings
Rock 'n Roll Racing
Warcraft
Wacraft II
Diablo
Starcraft
Diablo II
Warcraft III
World of Warcraft
(Upcoming) Starcraft II
(Upcoming) Diablo III
You notice that there are a lot of sequels since, oh, I don't know, Warcraft?
@Evdor: Blizzard may be relevant, but they're not important. They bring nothing new to the table and haven't for quite some time. They take their own old ideas and new ideas of others and combine them. It works well, but it contributes nothing to the gaming environment.
@Babelfish: Who the fuck cares, honestly? I appreciate games (and the developers who make them) that innovate but most of my favorite games don't do a damn thing new. In most cases they just take old ideas and improve upon them, refine them, and/or execute them really well. What's wrong with that? Making very polished, fun and addictive games (so long as they aren't innovating) isn't important? Funny way of looking at things.
@Squaretangle: Eh, while I am a D2 fan (wouldn't call myself nuts for D2 though, first time I played through it was less than a year ago), I see no problem in fixing problems with the older games. It's true that the inventory was a pain, and most of my TP's were used to get more pots or selling items to make room.
But yeah, these improvements are looking great, and I can picture all the bitching I'll get from my girlfriend when I "waste" hours and hours on this beast :D
