I love IGF. Every year we get at least one amazing game out of it, and usually more than that. I just wish I had the skill to contribute one of my many half-baked ideas.
I always love to see the games produced by people who are not bound by corporate obligations. My only qualm is that because they are not backed by said obligations, they are also not backed by the same funds, meaning the games are often too short, even if they are sweet.
@D Mitsuki : Gotta have guts kid!: That really depends. Many big budget games throw in hours of fluff whereas many of the IGF games are concise and meaningful experiences. I guess it really depends on what you're looking for in a game. Sadly, these day I don't have time for lots of 100+ hour games so it's nice to be able to see the forefront of gaming in small, one sitting play-through packages.
@Anemone: While I personally love a 100+ hour single player experience, I'm not really for 60 dollars for 6 hours. At that point, I could go watch three movies and get about the same hours of fun for less then half the price. I like games to be around 10-20 hours minimum, but don't complain for more hours thrown in there.
@D Mitsuki : Gotta have guts kid!: Most of the games in IGF are free or sub $20. You can snag last year's winner Blueberry Garden on Steam for like $5~. IGF games don't go for full sticker price. Most of the time the games from IGF end up on PSN/XBL/Steam or are simply free from their website. I'm fully with you on the subject of not wanting to pay $60 for 6 hours of gameplay, but if they can make a compelling story with great gameplay and I get a sense of closure from the ending then they have earned that $60 regardless of how long it is.
@Anemone: Yep, I'll never care for the mindset that a game's only good if it lasts some set amount of hours. It's that mindset which leads developers to drag things out with filler, uninteresting gameplay, and lengthy repetition which only serve to bog down a game but help it pass the length test. It's that kind of thinking which has killed shooters and beat-em ups. :/ I worry today's kids are losing the concept of replayability thanks to reviewers and developers pushing the quality = length notion.
Fine, I'll buy a damn iphone. You happy Apple? I tried really hard to be a conforming non-conformist by not liking your goddamn touch screen device and then you get support from video games that are actually good. Have your way with me, you scoundrels.
Sorry, wrong mindset. Still, I will remain a rebel, never purchasing a single piece of Apple hardware, ever. Damn their overpriced prorpietary garbage.
@mellowspaz: The iPhone itself isn't the problem. It's the annual rape-fest that AT&T puts you through to the tune of $1,200+ a year. Of course, you could always get an iTouch, but that doesn't make much more sense to pay $300 for a 16gb mp3 player...
@ryosen: well.. 400 dollars for a 32gig "mp3 player" would have seemed silly to me.. cept for the fact that i rarely play mp3s on it and usually use it for surfing the web and playing games.
@Foxsnipe: "overpriced prorpietary garbage." isnt that what lots of companies have done with things regarding video games? like bluray/ps3, msft and ANY of their accessories (10 dollars extra for a wireless item! yay!), or sony's umds as well? i mean.. you either get used to it or quit playing games i guess..
not an apple fan boy at all.. i mean i hated apple before i got my itouch like everyone else (mainly because everyone and their mom had ipods), but then i realized, whats the point? they never did nothin to me. i used to hate msft and sony too at some point. now im like hey if theres something i like about their hardware or the software put on their hardware.. im all for it.
I that I heard it would be on XBLA. Anyhoot, maybe the guy has one of those features that automatically maps the game to a controller as the 360 controller works on the PC, you may get the same kinda prompt on th PC as well.
Considering how fucking brilliant this game is, it would not surprise me at all if these guys decided to release it on the various consoles. I just hope they also do a PC release.
After playing this thing at the GDC last year, I decided I would buy this game on every platform if I could afford it. It's that great.
Oh man, I would love to get that on xbla! The videos of this from last year were so great. We really need stuff like this - other than Braid and Portal most of the puzzle offerings on XBLA involve matching three of things (bunnies, playing cards, gems and skulls).
@theuglyteradon: no, i think he's right. braid is great. so is Castle Crashers. and so are geometry wars 1 and 2. nintendo has lost wind (and soon "Cave Story") not to mention a HUGE library (of varying quality) titles from the yesteryear of the once-unstoppable Nintendo brand. but many of the best XBLA titles are available on other platforms: bionic Commando rearmed is on PSN also, so is Mega Man 9. i have had Rez and Ikaruga for years on last gen platforms. as far as unique titles that are built from the ground-up, exclusively for XBLA- there just isn't really that much, anymore :(
@laser beams: You really can't give credit for pre-existing WiiWare games such as Cave Story and then turn around and dock XBLA for Rez, Ikaruga, and N appearing elsewhere as well. Too many PSN fans so readily discount such titles to paint a picture of a barren XBLA, nevermind that these are AAA games which the vast majority of users had not been exposed. In addition, there's a fountain of original (and cheap) content at Community Games, which also gets unfairly disregarded despite the innovation and fun to be had there.

Sadly, the featured posters are more visible, so I won't be surprised if my comments would be unnoticeable to anyone.

lol its kind of ironic though that all the 360 stuff is proprietary.

That attack was unnecessary from a PS3 fanboy.

Yeah, sometimes I feel like Wiiware and PSN are getting the best of the downloadable games market.
But hoperfully this will even things out.

Yeah, sometimes I feel like Wiiware and PSN are getting shafted on the best downloadable games market.
Fixed!
