As a big fan of iD's work in the late 90's, I hope Rage can be the game that puts iD back up there as a developer of great games. It's kind of a shame they aren't releasing it this year, because it could have been their first game released in this decade that wasn't mediocre.
It's good to see id taking a big jump back into development. RAGE is their first game since...what, Doom 3? They must have gotten lost in the dark for a while.
@I_Like_Rabbits: It's kinda true, Quake 4 was mostly a Raven game, Quake Wars did have a bit more involvement from id, both tech and production wise. But it's hard to gauge the impact that would have had while id was still a smallish team.
id spent about 18 months after Doom 3 working on a survival horror before scrapping it and deciding to go a completely different route ie Rage.
Then they started ramping up team size hugely and at some point started up Doom 4 development as well.
There's Quake live too which is a third team separate from the Rage team, and id Mobile which has always been independent except for a little tech work by Carmack.
So yes, Doom 3 in 2004 was ids last full team project.
It's beginning to look similar to the gap between halflife and halflife 2 heh.
@NotTheGuy: Even if id doesn't code the game themselves, they still have full control of any of their IP's regardless of if it was Raven or Splash Damage. To omit those games as being id games just because they weren't the primary developer is inaccurate, because id had total control in the direction the product took and they handpicked the Dev who did handle the day-to-day operations of the code.
