John Carmack Plans Space Fishbowl
Lord British may have reached for the stars - and given us a cryptic message in space runes - but to do so he had to splurge millions of his hard earned Gold and train for months with Russian cosmonauts. id (Try To) Explain Away Rage 360 "Cuts"
Little bit of confusion yesterday over reports that id's upcoming shooter Rage had seen parts of the game cut - across all platforms - due to the 360's limited storage space. A 1UP report said cuts had been made, id said "nunh unh". Confusing! id have today attempted to settle the matter, with Tim Willits telling Shacknews "As far as game content, I will swear on the lives of my children that nothing was cut". So...nothing was literally cut, they just designed the entire game around the limitations of one of the target platforms? It's taking a different road (Semantics Ave), but don't we still end up at the same place? More » -

Roger Avary Still At Work On Wolfenstein Script
Don't go expecting that Wolfenstein movie adaptation any time soon. A combination of the writer's strike and his own workload (plus, uh, some other stuff) means Roger Avary is still working on the movie's script. And with nobody else having seen it, it's to be presumed he's only just started it. Bummer. While id's Todd Hollenshead revealed to Eurogamer that the movie deal includes some "contract provisions", stating Avary can't just sit on the property forever, he also admits that it's not every day you get a chance to have an Academy Award winner write your movie. Not every day an Academy Award winner gets to write a movie about nazis, zombies and a mechanised Adolf Hitler, either. More » -

Console Execs Talk The Next Next Gen
Aside from some stragglers picking up a PS2 for the first time, the console transition period is most definitely over. What was "next gen" a year or two ago is now "current gen". Which means it's time to appreciate what we've got, right? NO. No, it means it's time to start looking again towards the future. Forbes writer Chris Morris has polled a number of games executives on what they think the next generation will hold, and while their responses are vague, they're no less entertaining because of it. The EA E3 2008 Press Conference In Pictures

id Leave Activision For EA
For the longest time, Activision have published id's games. But no longer! John Carmack took to the stage during EA's E3 address to announce a new partnership between the two companies, whereby EA will be publishing Rage, id's upcoming shooter and first game to make use of their new engine tech. We'd normally insert some kind of statement about this adversely affecting Activision, but really, these days they're probably good for the money. -

Game Informer Have Details On New Wolfenstein Game
Poor Spike TV. Their scoop's blown! The first details on the next Wolfenstein title are actually to be found in the latest issue of Game Informer, which gives us information on the game's setting and requisite gimmicky features. Aside from the obvious (you're still BJ Blaskowitz, you're still fighting Nazis who are mucking about with the occult), the game will introduce a quasi-sandbox city, with different parts of it opening up as you complete missions. It'll also feature an AI-controlled resistance force that will assist you, and there'll be some Link-to-the-Past-ish elements courtesy of an ability to enter "The Shroud", a dark, alternate version of the game's city. As expected, Raven are handling development, and it'll be appearing on the PS3, 360 and PC. More » -

New Wolfenstein Game To (Probably) Be Shown At E3
Spike TV sent out a presser today, trying to drum up support/interest in their coverage of E3. Nothing in it you won't be bombarded with via TV commercials over the next few days. Buried amongst the hype and hyperbole, however, is some newsy stuff! Stuff like this: "Also, tune in for more world exclusive surprises including something special from id Software and Raven Software". Seeing as we've known for some time that Raven are currently working on the latest entry in id's Wolfenstein series, it seems a safe bet we'll be seeing something about the game during next week's festivities. Id: ESA Departure "Temporary and not Political"
Technology columnist Mike Musgrove got Entertainment Software Association CEO Michael Gallagher on the horn (we got him first!) to talk about, what else, ESA's membership losses. Everyone here should be familiar with the story and the pressures that realigning E3 have brought to bear on membership dues, believed to be the motivation for so many big name publishers flying the coop. ESA refers us to the companies to get the reasons for leaving, and so far none have, really.

Happy Birthday, Wolfenstein
Yes, other games came before it, but that's just nitpicking: for 99% of gamers, the first-person shooter genre kicked off with Wolfenstein 3D, which turned 16 yesterday. Happy birthday! Having played through the original only a few months ago, it's funny how, sixteen years on, I still had more fun with Wolfenstein than I do with most modern FPS games. Maybe that says something about the pure, arcade pleasures of the game. Or (more likely) it says something about the appeal of mowing down a mechanised Hitler with a chaingun while stuffing your face with plates of bbq chicken. More » -

The Quake Family Tree
Ever hear someone say "oh, man, that game's just like that other game, just with different multiplayer"? Course you have. Most games are just successors/homages/rip-offs of games that came before them. As it is with most creative mediums. And few games inspired so many of its competitors/descendants than Quake did. Here, then, is Quake's "family tree", an academic pursuit that's probably the only place on the internet you'll see Daikatana, American McGee's Alice, Hexen II and Half-Life 2 standing so close to one another without getting nervous. The original Quake running on a Nintendo DS?
