@Antiterra: Its pure gold. It makes me want to pick it up for a long night of gaming. If only I could get a Blue Phantom to do some coop for my finals.
@Showmeyomoves!: @Outkastprince: Hey thanks guys! I'll take good care of this star thing... oh don't mind those bite marks, I thought there was chocolate inside.
Are we really nominating people for posting pictures of 4chan memes now. Don't get me wrong; it's hilarious and all, but do we really want to encourage people to turn the comment section to turn into /b/.
@Vishus: Just wait. I've got this great picture of an Amazon product called "Tuscan Milk". Next time there is a Star Wars thread I'll post it up with a pic of some Tusken raiders cosplayers. It'll be a classic.
I've also got a great tshirt in the works called "Three Crecente Moon." It's going to be a bestseller on Meatbun.com.
I really am getting tired of this "PC Gamers are the master race!" bullshit.
PC is just another platform and just because advancements were made on it in the past does not mean that advancements will not continue to happen just because it is no longer the dominant platform.
It's as bad as the "hardcore" vs "casual" or the console fanboy wars. They're all just different ways to enjoy the same thing.
What annoys me the most is that the comment seems to be in response to IW capping the multiplayer limits on the PC version of MW2. That isn't killing PC gaming, that's just having one version of the game conform to other versions on different platforms.
One title not having a "superior" PC port and suddenly the sky is falling? Come on guys, be rational, if it isn't up to par, play something else, IW will see it as a failed experiment and not do it again.
Of course, there's still the option that IW got it right, but where's the fun in judging something on it's merits instead of jumping to conclusions based on things you read online?
So you guys can enjoy your petty arguments about why PC gaming is/isn't superior, but that mentality is what's really holding shit back. #multitap
@TrjnRabbit: I have to say that I especially agree with that first line.
I mean, I see a lot of bashing from the fanboys of the 360 and PS3 "camps", but the PC gamers are the ones that I hear the most smack talk from.
And I'm not saying this as a flame, nor am I saying it without recognizing that the PC is an important platform that has contributed massively to gaming. Even though I'm not big on PC gaming myself, I try to at least understand and sypathize with those who do use it as their platform of choice when they get screwed over, and I get that there are some definite advantages to playing on the PC.
What tires me out is how anyone who doesn't see eye to eye with them or who prefers to play on a console is suddenly some sort of dumbed down gamer, incapable of fully appreciating the inticracies and beauty of PC gaming because we're busy shooting "teh alienz" apparently.
I'd be real nice if people could just get off their high horses and realize that, as you said, it's all about preference and personal senses of value, and maybe discuss the issues without belittling each other. You don't have to make the other guy look stupid to make a point.
And this isn't a focus on Kotaku's commenters, but just in general, and to fanboys of ALL the platforms. You don't need to look down on someone to support the things you care about. #multitap
@TrjnRabbit: "What annoys me the most is that the comment seems to be in response to IW capping the multiplayer limits on the PC version of MW2. That isn't killing PC gaming, that's just having one version of the game conform to other versions on different platforms."
The biggest problem is the lack of dedicated servers. Matchmaking, which is what is used on consoles, is a thing of the past for PC gamers, we moved on. IW/BA are taking multiplaying a step back, just so they can make more money. Of course, they are well within their rights to do it, but shouldn't we as consumers speak up when we are being fucked over?
"One title not having a "superior" PC port and suddenly the sky is falling? Come on guys, be rational, if it isn't up to par, play something else, IW will see it as a failed experiment and not do it again."
We are the vocal minority, unfortunately, this game will probably be very successful, even on PC. Companies like id, and probably many others will be looking at MW2 too see how successful it is and if they can get away with it too. Simply not buying the game is not enough, others need to do it too, or the future of multiplayer on PC is the past.
I don't want to go to the hospital and have the doctor try to cure me with leeches.
"Of course, there's still the option that IW got it right, but where's the fun in judging something on it's merits instead of jumping to conclusions based on things you read online?"
No, that is no option. Matchmaking has always been, and always will be inferior to dedicated servers. Anyone that disagree obviously do not know enough about dedicated servers to comment. #multitap
@azr:
See, I read all of that and all I see is you saying "matchmaking bad, dedicated servers good".
Is it possible, and humour me for a second that those who are dismissing your claims are not doing so because they don't know enough about dedicated servers but you don't know enough about matchmaking?
Until you try the service, you have no idea how much of an improvement or failure it is.
The point of it is to try and make the PC community more open, dedicated servers help create insular little groups that are tough for new players to penetrate.
You still have private games, which you should still be able to play under your own rules. Which means console commands and some form of modding will probably still be available to you.
So, in short, don't judge until you actually try, because not all change is bad and not everything that your community has rejected is a bad idea. It's that simple. #multitap
@azr: So, you don't think it's possible that in the years since you last use it, the matchmaking system has drastically improved? Especially with plenty of console games using it?
That's the problem, you're focused on how it used to be, when what IW is doing may be a massive improvement, but because you're so used to dedicated servers and how they are better than what you knew about matchmaking that you're ignoring the very real possibility that the matchmaking system (that none of us have used yet) could actually be good.
Because I've tried matchmaking, and I've tried dedicated servers, and I've had bad experiences with both, so I'm willing to accept that a matchmaking service could work.
Wait until you try it before saying that it's just IW trying to fuck you over. Opening up the game to more people is a good thing, they might be doing it for the sake of making more money, but you have to realise that they try to make more money by improving the average customer experience.
@TrjnRabbit: "but you have to realise that they try to make more money by improving the average customer experience."
By removing support for dedicated servers and enforcing matchmaking they are also excluding the mod community. They are doing this so they can force dlc down our throats like they do on consoles.
The difference between matchmaking and dedicated servers when it comes to accessibility is insignificant. Do you seriously believe there are anyone out there on the fence about this game, deciding to buy it because it's more accessible because of matchmaking? #multitap
@azr:
I'm sure the mod community can find ways around it. They generally do.
As for matchmaking not making the game more accessible, you probably don't experience it much, but there are plenty of people put off by multiplayer where they aren't able to find players of their own skill level.
That's a big thing for a lot of players, they never get into it because it's too difficult (ie: inaccessible) so they miss out on the multiplayer. It might not stop some from purchasing the game, but they won't rave to their friends how awesome the game is.
Word of mouth is a powerful marketing tool and the easiest way to utilise it is to have a product that people will want to talk about. When the biggest strength of the COD series is it's multiplayer, you would want that to be as easy to get involved in as possible. #multitap
@TrjnRabbit: "The point of it is to try and make the PC community more open, dedicated servers help create insular little groups that are tough for new players to penetrate."
See the problem is, matchmaking is a useless thing community wise.
A half decent analogy would be;
At school you go in to a class, now you could all not know each other at first, or you could be the new kid, but as you progress through the year, all going to lessons as the same group in your class you make friends n get a bond.
With matchmaking it'd be like all the students turning upto school in the morning, going to the assembly hall n group up with the 10 kids closest to them and going to lessons with them kids for that day. then the next day group up with another bunch. And you don't really make many friends that way.
How many folks are added to XBL or PSN friend lists from a single match online? And how many of these folks regularly play together? It's just not a great way to build community.
PC gamers aren't saying that matchmaking is downright crap. It's jsut not as good as Dedicated servers.
And we aren't outright saying no to matchmaking, if it helps bring in casuals the more the merrier. Just have a dual system of Dedicated n Matchmaking, bring in choice. And tis not like its any effort to do, MW1 had it, so they've had to remove n replace the MP part with IWnet, when they could of just bolted IWnet on top of MW1's system. #multitap
I was a PC gamer in the 90s. I got sick of having to upgrade my hardware all the time. Now I have the same machine I was using in 2002 and I haven't upgraded it a bit. It's a shame that I can't play anything new on it, but I really can't make myself give a damn if I have to continuously shell out for upgrades. I have all 3 consoles and they don't need any upgrades to play the latest and greatest. #multitap
@High Speed Indeed: Which 3? Wii, Xbox, PS2? Or 360 and PS3? You're talking almost 8 years of advances in the PC, and both of those systems have had another iteration, and the Wii wasn't even invented. The cost of 2 of those systems could get you a really kickass gaming rig.
If you don't think you'll have to upgrade one or more of those systems in the near future, then you should read about development cycles. #multitap
@Fluorine: i'm obviously talking about the 3 current systems - wii, ps3, 360.
and it's not like i have to continuously upgrade the consoles piece by piece. i'll just by the new iteration for $250 when the next generation is starting to come down in price.
i have about $750 tied up in the three current consoles. that could buy me one midrange computer. i'm not sold on it.
now you can get a 360 for $100 from walmart. isn't that less than a single high end graphics card? #multitap
@High Speed Indeed: It's not really obvious. You started talking about the 90s, then mentioned 2002.
You seem shocked you can't play anything recent on your old comp from 2002. Can you play any modern titles on the old consoles you own from seven years ago? No. Hell, you can't even play PS2 games on your Slim.
You sure could emulate those PS2 games on your comp now though, as well as play all of the roms you have for every console you owned back in 2002 on your PC, but you wouldn't want to spend $750 that you have tied up in the parts you have (not to mention any money you spent on consoles previously) on some useless Piece of Crap. #multitap
@Fluorine: Uhh, no, I'm not shocked at all that I can't play modern games on a 7 year old PC. The cost of staying at the cutting edge of PC gaming is what deters me because it's just not worth it to me. Most of the games I'm looking to play are available on one or more of the consoles.
I wouldn't exactly call older consoles useless pieces of crap. I collect and value old consoles highly, and still play them regularly, as well as occasional old PC games when I can get them to run properly on XP. I wouldn't mind finding an old C64 or Apple IIGS if the price was right.
Funny that you mention emulation as that really is the bulk of the gaming that I do with my PC, but that is no substitute for the actual consoles.
I'm really more of a retro gamer, and the short list of new realease games that I am interested in are available on the consoles, and for less expensive than putting together a PC. I only buy 1 or 2 new release games a year, and all the rest are older, used titles for under $20. It ends up being cheaper than upgrading to new PC hardware just to play 1 or 2 new PC games a year. Plus I'm amassing an affordable backlog of older games that interest me. #multitap
@High Speed Indeed: See, I'm the same way. Sadly, most of the genres that I like are not big sellers, and when they are, are not really cutting edge in technology (civ/wargames/RPGs). Most of the titles I like are older titles, and don't require brand new hardware all the time. I don't really see the need to play new titles right away, as I'm still in the middle of huge campaigns with 100s of hours left. When I finish them, I generally play something new to break up the experience before going back.
My Entertainment centre is already a snafu of cables, cords and other crap that I can't set up all my old consoles in any meaningful way there that would allow me to play them in comfort, so I emulate them on PC. There's a C64 emulator, btw. I played Impossible Mission and Dragonriders of Pern (sadly, they don't really stand the test of time.)
Hmm... I forget what we were talking about. Oh... new consoles. #multitap
You can complain about people not supporting PC gaming, but in the end, it's the fault of the game developers and those who actually create and support PC gaming.
Reminds me of something going on where I live. A local theatre closed down. In an interview, the owner was all bitter that no one was supported their stage productions.
Meanwhile, three other theatres in that city are doing just fine. This particular one was just poorly run.
It's almost never the audience's fault, you gotta give people a good reason to come to the show. #multitap
