I was waiting for Huxley for years and when I finally got a chance to play in the beta it was just wretched.
The single-player experience had me slogging through the same boring, linear area to perform menial tasks. And half the time, they would never trigger or finish due to severe bugs. I wasn't that impressed with the skill-tree either, though I'm sure it really develops in the later levels. The improvements just felt generic and mildly incremental.
Multiplayer was bit more entertaining (since something was actually happening), but it was still a very homogeneous experience: everyone running around jumping and shooting rockets at a furious pace with terrible lag hindering every match. It really just reminded me of playing UT/Quake years ago. I wouldn't mind that (it's not my favorite), but it wasn't even that fast or smooth which is what I expect from a UT/Quake style shooter.
Unfortunately, Huxley didn't bring much to the table like I thought it would. Now I'm resting my hopes on Borderlands, which appears to be what Huxley should've been.
You'll probably like Huxley if: You're a fan of fast-paced UT/Quake rocketplay and don't mind completing boring tasks to push the story forward.
You probably won't like Huxley if: You enjoy more realistic shooters like COD or Fallout 3, fast moving plotlines, and deeply customizable character skills.
@7ucky:
I'm promoting this comment, because it's quite a nice analysis of a game I am currently downloading and getting ready to play.
I would also point out, though, that the game "Global Agenda" is shaping up to be the next Planetside, the only FPSMMO I can think of that actually worked on a large scale.
@ShaggE wants to join the Egg Council.:
Are you sure it's not Canada? It's easy to get confused. Is everything a bit tidier than normal? Have you been shot yet today? You may very well be in Canada.
@goldenroad: Definitely not Canada. Haven't had to tell any hosers to take off. :P
Ah, but I keed the Canada. We're proud to have you as America's hat. :D
Ah, but I keed Canada again. You gave us Rick Moranis, and that makes you okay in my book.
@ShaggE wants to join the Egg Council.:
Where do you live? Because depending on where you live, you may not be in the REAL America.
Just ask Sarah Palin.
I was in CBT1 and am 100% sure I played it more than anyone else, and I'm still all over every second this beta too... while some people may be disappointed, this game which is essentially the game I've been dreaming of... (Unreal the MMO :P) man I need to get less nerdy dreams, but aside from that I've been pumped for it since it was announced before the 360 came out. It met my expectations exactly, but that's probably because when I first heard it I didn't expect them to deliver 100 v 100 battles, but aside from that, it's all there, and it's AMAZING!
I've played it a lot more than the people giving these short reviews of their short experiences not liking it... give it a chance if you like twitch paced shooters, and the mmo enviroment, you'll like this if you give it a chance...
Btw kotaku aside from the Korean beta's... this is the second U.S. beta lol, you probably already knew that though you clever thing you.
I've been playing for about a day. It's pretty good, certainly more of a squad based FPS than and MMOFPSRPG, but with a very traditional weapon/armor/item purchasing and crafting system.
There are a few environmental glitches I've run into (getting stuck in walls and stuff), but nothing game breaking. The only real problem I've had so far is that none of my friends and I can seem to maintain a stable connection when we team up on missions. Skirmish (PvP matches) has a little lag, but it's alright.
As far as gameplay, there are a few balancing issues. The one I've noticed the most (because I play the sniper class) is that snipers are pretty gimped. There are no real vantage points on any of the skirmish maps, and the mission environments have seemingly insurmountable geometry. I don't even see a point to jumping, beyond dodging enemy fire, since the game doesn't have anything to jump onto/from. The tutorial section had a short platforming bit, but all the actual game maps just give you ramps if you need to get from one level to another.
But I've only been playing a day, and I can't claim to have seen anywhere near enough of the game to declare a verdict on it. My main problem right now really isn't so much of gimped sniping as it is the shaky servers. It's hard to solo as a sniper, and I can't really progress when squad missions keep falling apart from network timeouts.

I've been following this one for a while, and I hate to say it, but I'm not hopeful. From where it started, as a Planetside with more dystopia and quasi-RPG elements, it's lingered in development for far too long. From all I hear, it's slowly degraded into Yet Another Team Shooter with minimal interesting qualities.
Oh well. Here's hoping that someone else will make that SciFi FPSMMO we're all really looking for.
Well, me and the fourteen other guys, that is.
I think MAG and Huxley should have a race to see who can release first.
Also has anyone noticed that this might turn out into another Infamous vs. Prototype thing?
@Bring_Back_Pluto:
... Huxley VS Global Agenda?
Whichever comes out - which is still long off for both - will get the most amount of bitch slapping from the ex-Planet Side crew of this and that and that.
I was a member of the closed Beta about a month ago. It's not a bad game. The rpg customizations + fighting as an FPS works alright. What annoyed me about the game was the art style and engine. The game flew on my system but it looks like Gears of War's ugly cousin. Why couldn't the devs give the game it's own unique look? Does the Unreal engine force devs to fight against it to stop their games from looking the same?
@davincij:
Here's my take on it.
Think of the Unreal engine as the collection of genes to make you look like... Whatever, let's say black guy.
So you can make some changes somewhat easily, namely make it so that your skin is "white".
However, it'll take a hella lot more to make you Be like a white guy in the genetic sense, with a lot of potential to dog it all up on the way there.
Can't get the captcha key to load for some odd reason. I turned all my AV and firewall stuff off and still no dice. Oh well, from the negative comments I'm reading it probably wouldn't be worth it anyway.
This was the 100 vs. 100 MMOFPS game that was destined for the 360 but never happened...
Btw..
Yay.... thanks for posting up my tip from five months back... :)
Cool, will be checking this out later. They could really do with marketing the game a bit though, there's been no news or new screens, etc, etc in ages.
@pandafresh: I knew it was a PC exclusive, didn't know it had went free2play though. Thanks for the info
@Char Aznable: Ouch! That's not good. But hey, at least your ping is decent.
Am I supposed to be surprised? I maintain that the company Webzen does not in fact make games, if indeed it exists at all. It's probably a front for Scientology.
