I had a reeeeally crappy PC that I tried to play Deus Ex on in 2001. It chugged maybe 5-10 FPS out on the low, low resolution of 800x600.
It's kind of depressing that on my new dual-core PC with 512 MB video card and 4GB of ram, that even with all settings set to "low", I can't run The Witcher at more than 800x600 and get 5-10 FPS out of it. Seriously, the game looks the same as Deus Ex did, yet somehow takes up more than 10 times the processing power.
So although the game is only $20, the computer you need to run it well is well over $1600. Still not a bargain.
BTW, the above is why I play console games. Cause, for the most part, it all just works.
@senselocke: My computer is about 400 to 500 and runs the witcher fine at full detail. Have you installed the lastest patches which resolve pretty much all the old slow down bugs?

@Taggart6: I don't always drink beer, but when I do...: Yes to all latest drivers and patches. My friend with the actual $1600 computer also has trouble running it, and he's much more a PC geek than I am. The game does not run well on either my PC or laptop, or any of his three gaming PC's.
I'll check patches again, but patch checks are the first thing I do on install.

was ordering it and saw this: The Digital Distribution version of The Witcher (v.1.3) is not supported by Vista 64-bit systems.
does this mean that it wont work on Win 7? Grr 5 hours left to decide... sigh
This version is uncensored right? I don't really need to jolly myself to naked pictures on cards or whatever is in this game but I'd go uncensored out of principle.
is the witcher even good, i hear mixed feelings like "oh it sucks major donkey balls" or "its a masterpiece it should have done better" . Well which one is it Donkey balls or masterpiece?
@infinitezero: I didn't really like it. Timed button-click combat was inane. The dark fantasy setting was laughably bad too. Almost as bad as Dragon Age.
@infinitezero: Perosnally, I found that the game started off slow but quickly pulls you in midway of the 1st chapter.
If the combat seems boring and repetitive at first, that's because it is. However that changes once you unlock spells, additional combat moves, the silver sword, and etc.
The game is also long. There are something like 5-6 parts (IIRC) and I think each one can be 10-15 hours long (if your into doing allt eh side quests and what not like I am)
So yeah, if you can get past teh first 3-4 hours you'll find a solid game worth investing your time. Plus there are sex cards, sarcastic humor, drinking mini-games, and gambling.
@infinitezero: Sorry, I didn't mean any serious offense, but Bioware has been making the same game since KotOR, just reskinned. Dragon Age is my least favorite of the skins to date.
@Maximillion: It hink you can also change the difficulty on the fly though I'm not to sure. But yeah, if the game is easy then up the difficulty. or at least wait till you past the tutorial.
This is not the best price I've seen for The Witcher, but with all the chatter about Dragon Age: Origins lately, I just wanted to throw in my $0.02 that this game is worth picking up even at $20. I enjoyed DA:O but the plot (poison-drinking monster hunters!), the game world, the "choice system," even the alchemy crafting system regularly made me think, "Wow, The Witcher did this so much better."
@pressstart: I've seen it for $5 a couple places... I think Steam had a sale at one point? And for $10 used in several places.
You may not know this, but all editions are the same. Enhanced and Director's Cut are both freely available as patches to the regular edition. Enhanced is a ton of bug fixes and enhancements. I haven't played Director's Cut but my understanding is that it's mostly to put the adult content back in that was taken out in the U.S. version.
After all of the Steam Black Friday sales, $20 feels like a lot for a digital download.
My rule of thumb has always been that if it's a digital copy, it needs to be cheap - really cheap - for me to give up the peace of mind I get from owning a physical copy.
i got the normal version from EB (not used) for 10 bucks....turns out you can download all the extra level stuff now that turns your normal version into the enhanced edition...you just don't get the other cool stuff
@Ursus-Veritas: Asda is the Wal-Mart of the UK. In fact it's owned by Wal-Mart even though it was recently sold and bought by another Wal-Mart company. Useless fact since I doubt Wal-Mart would be stocking a Top-Gear calendar.

@-MasterDex-: I was just wondering, for the games that are delivered digitally via Steam and/or Direct2Drive, if you bought a game from D2D and you also have a Steam account, would Steam recognize it as a legitimate copy or would it get in a hissy fit?
@-MasterDex-: Completely agree. The Witcher is one of the best RPGs I've played in years, and - if you get your hands on the Enhanced Edition - one of the best value deals you can get. I picked it up for £20, and so that £20 netted me the game (much improved over the first release), one soundtrack CD and another "Inspired by..." CD, the first Witcher short story, and two Making of DVDs. Not bad!
@PoweredByHentai: Steam only recognise games bought through it as Steam games. That is, it will appear in the 'Community' tab and Steam profile, and update automatically. You can, however, launch any game on your PC through Steam. This will allow you to access the Steam overlay while playing to browse websites or communicate with your friends.
@PoweredByHentai: I bought Saint's Row 2 during that $5 deal D2D had and it was immediately recognized by Steam once I opened the install file. Dunno if that's the standard though.
@syafiqjabar of Mars: I've only ever bought one game from D2D (woo for £5 sales) and it installed in Steam.
So I can now run it just like any normal Steam bought game.
So its not always the case with D2D games that they will be their own thing.
@MDog: The great thing is that if you don't get the enhanced edition, you can still get everything from the enhanced edition. I got the game before the Enhanced Edition was released and I thought "Feck it! I should have waited" but found that out! It's really cool they did that.
@syafiqjabar of Mars: There are certain games, especially newer games that can be added to Steam even if you bought the game through retail. Unreal Tournament 3 is an example. It doesn't require steam whatsoever but I was able to activate my key on Steam and download and patch it via Steam.
@Alcoves: Some games are added to Steam even if you buy them at retail. Any Valve games do this, but also others like Saint's Row 2, Modern Warfare 2 and Dawn of War 2.
Some retail games that have CD keys can have the CD key activated through Steam, so you have a physical copy and a downloadable one.
@deanbmmv: With Modern Warfare 2 not being sold through other download services (they do not want to support their competitor), maybe after this only retail and Steam games are registered in Steam.

Without being on hard the potions (which are inherent to a Witcher) are unnecessary and remove a huge tactical element to the game.
It bugs me when people, not necessarily you) play easy or normal settings and then complain it's boring or rudimentary.
